SmartLipo: What Is It?
SmartLipo is a novel form of liposuction that uses laser energy to effectively remove body fat while promoting tissue healing and skin tightening. Also referred to as laser-assisted lipolysis, SmartLipo is performed under local anesthesia and requires less than one hour to complete. During SmartLipo procedure, Dr. Kincaid creates several tiny incisions in the skin, through which he inserts a cannula equipped with a special laser fiber. The laser delivers very precise pulses of energy to the fat cells, causing their membranes to burst, releasing the oily substance inside. The cannula (a small tube about 2mm in diameter) is then used to suction this substance out of the body.
Because only local anesthesia is used during the SmartLipo procedure, this approach cancels the risks associated with general anesthesia and greatly reduces the recovery time. In fact, many of Dr. Kincaid's San Diego / La Jolla SmartLipo patients are able to return to work the same day, which is why this procedure is sometimes referred to as a “lunchtime liposuction.” In addition, the laser energy used during SmartLipo surgery promotes blood vessel coagulation, which reduces bleeding and significantly decreases swelling and bruising. SmartLipo in San Diego: Is It For Me?

Generally, patients should be within 25 pounds of their ideal weight to be considered candidates for liposuction. This is because SmartLipo is not a weight loss procedure and cannot remove very large amounts of fatty tissue. However, SmartLipo can effectively eliminate localized fatty tissue deposits that are resistant to exercise and diet. SmartLipo Procedure
The first step of SmartLipo procedure is administration of local anesthesia, which means that the treated area is numbed while the patient remains awake. Next, Dr. Kincaid creates several incisions that are only several millimeters long around the targeted area. He uses these incisions to insert the laser-assisted cannula and gently remove the fatty tissue deposits. After the procedure is completed, he removes the cannula and closes the incisions. Most San Diego / La Jolla SmartLipo patients experience very little discomfort and are able to return to their daily routines almost immediately. However, Dr. Kincaid usually recommends that they rest and return to work within one to two days following a SmartLipo procedure. The stitches and bandages are usually removed one to two weeks after the surgery, after which time the tiny surgical incisions fade and become virtually unnoticeable.
