Breast Augmentation – Surgical Risks

Breast Augmentation: Safety Considerations

Although the vast majority of breast augmentation procedures create beautiful results without any significant complications, in rare cases patients might experience adverse side effects, such as infection or blood accumulation around the implant. In order to minimize these risks, Dr. Kincaid performs all breast augmentation procedures at a certified facility where the surgical team adheres to strict safety and hygiene protocols. In addition, the advanced design and materials used in manufacturing breast implants further reduces the possibility of an infection. If an infection occurs, it can usually be treated with medications; however, in especially severe cases the implants might have to be temporarily removed.

Another possible side effect of breast augmentation surgery is excessive scar tissue formation. While formation of some scar tissue around the implant is a natural part of the healing process, sometimes excess scar tissue forms, causing the breast to feel very firm. This condition is referred to as capsular contracture. If the patient experiences significant discomfort and/or breast appearance changes due to capsular contracture, Dr. Stuart Kincaid can perform revision surgery to remove the scar tissue and/or replace the implant.

Breast Implants: Long-Term Considerations

As a seasoned San Diego breast augmentation specialist, Dr. Kincaid explains to all of his patients that today's breast implants provide long-lasting results and, contrary to popular misconceptions, do not have to be replaced every five years. However, breast implants do not last forever and at some point might have to be replaced and/or removed. The design of breast implants allows both the patient and the doctor determine when a surgical intervention might be necessary. For example, saline implants might rupture as a result of chest trauma or long wear, causing the saline to leak. This process is not dangerous as the saline is safely absorbed by the body within several hours. However, the breast changes its appearance, which is why the patient might desire to replace the implant.

Another consideration concerning more mature breast augmentation San Diego / La Jolla patients is mammographic examinations. While breast implants do not preclude mammograms, Dr. Kincaid recommends that patients choose radiology technicians with special expertise in examining augmented breasts. For more thorough breast tissue images, patients can also undergo ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging if necessary.
