How Far in Advance Should You Schedule Your Plastic Surgery Consultation and Surgery?

Monday, July 9th, 2012

woman talking on cell phone How Far in Advance Should You Schedule Your Plastic Surgery Consultation and Surgery? Patients who are considering plastic surgery rarely do so on a whim. Most patients have been thinking about it for a long time and then finally make the decision to move forward. In most cases, it makes sense to begin the research phase of the process as soon as the patient is considering surgery. This is especially important for patients who are considering complex surgeries like post massive weight loss procedures including thigh lift, arm lift, or body lift. Gathering information from reliable sources on the Internet, the ASPS website, and other medical resources can prove valuable in providing background information for the patient. Once the patient has gathered enough research it is time to approach the consultation phase. This is a good time to put together a resource tablet so that patients can refer to questions that they have as they proceed with their consultation. Dr. Stuart Kincaid stresses to his patients, in the initial consultation that it is important to understand that plastic surgeons could vary in their recommendation for the patient. This does not mean necessarily that one plastic surgeon is correct and the other is wrong in their recommendation. A plastic surgeon makes a recommendation based on what he or she is comfortable with in their own hands. For this reason, it can be extremely confusing if a patient has numerous consultations. It is much more effective if patients make a decision prior to the consultation concerning which qualities and characteristics must be present in the practice and with the plastic surgeon that they choose. For example,  is important that your plastic surgeon is located within a 20 mile radius of your home, or is it important that your plastic surgeon has a certain number of years of experience? These should be decided before making your first consultation so that it becomes much more effective when making the final decision. Dr. Stuart Kincaid typically encourages patients to make their consultation fairly close- to when they are actually ready to schedule there surgery. If the consultation is too far in advance of when the patient is ready for surgery, it is likely that many things could have changed and the recommendation may no longer be valid. Dr. Stuart Kincaid welcomes patients to schedule a consultation to determine which plastic surgery procedures are best for them.

Plastic Surgery Blog: You’ve lost the Weight Now What?

spanx Plastic Surgery Blog: Youve lost the Weight Now What?It can be very frustrating for patients who have lost a significant amount of weight. While on the surface there are many compliments on the challenge they have faced and the fact that they have overcome the odds. But beneath the surface for many patients there is a significant amount of loose skin that reminds them every day of their weight loss. Some patients wear full body spanxs which helped to hold the skin tight, at least from an appearance perspective. But, as the summer months get underway spanxs underneath close can be extremely uncomfortable. Many patients consult with Dr. Stuart Kincaid to determine what their options are for eliminating loose and lax skin on their arms, abdomen, and ou thighs. For many patients it’s not just a cosmetic issue. Skin folds can be not only uncomfortable but can sweat and develop rashes and infections. Dr. Stuart Kincaid explains to patients after weight loss that post massive weight loss surgery is the only truly effective way to remove a significant amount of loose skin. For the abdomen Dr. Stuart Kincaid will typically recommend an abdominoplasty. For most patients who have lost weight an extended incision may be necessary to obtain the best aesthetic results. For the thighs Dr. Stuart Kincaid will typically recommend a thigh lift which will allow him to lift up the excess skin and remove it leaving tighter more toned looking legs. For the arms Dr. Stuart Kincaid will typically recommend a brachioplasty or arm lift. This will allow him to remove the excess skin on the underside of the arm utilizing an incision that is well hidden on the underside of the arm. Patients are overwhelmingly thrilled with the results Dr. Stuart Kincaid can deliver after patients have lost weight. In some cases Dr. Stuart Kincaid may recommend that patients have the surgeries performed separately to ensure safety and maximize the results. Patients are encouraged to consult with Dr. Stuart Kincaid and determine if post massive weight loss surgery is a viable option for them.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Obesity Bias Exist Study Shows

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

Overweight African American Woman2 Plastic Surgery Blog: Obesity Bias Exist Study ShowsWeight bias is frowned upon and in many states illegal. According to a recent local onlinenewsarticle research that was published recently in the International Journal of Obesity, used 95 raters who were  were New Zealand undergraduate students, and weren’t aware that weight bias was the real focus of the study, to evaluate potential candidates for employment. “Clearly, these were not actual employers,” said study co-author Janet Latner, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Hawaii. “But they are people who will enter the workforce, and the underlying prejudice that they’re displaying could ultimately affect their decisions regarding future colleagues.” The students involved in the study  — mostly female — received information packages on “candidates” to rate them for a potential managerial position. The fake resumes were equivalent as far as skills, experience and education. The women were shown in the photos that had been located on websites. To eliminate other appearance-based biases, the six women were of similar ages, from 29 to 32, and of European descent. The women had all been massive weight loss surgery patients. Before surgery,  (BMI) ranged from 38 to 41. A BMI of 30 or more is considered obese. After surgery, the women’s BMI ranged from 22 to 24, which is considered normal weight. The student “employers” evaluated candidates for starting salary, leadership potential and chances of being hired. Based on the ratings, bigger women had less chance of being offered a position. And if they managed to pass that obstacle, they were still offered lower salaries and limited career progression. Interestingly, the more attractive the raters considered themselves, the greater the weight bias they showed, researchers discovered. Although men were not included in the study researchers theorized that weight biases could be inflicted on them as well. Dr. StuartKincaid empathizes with post massive weight loss patientswho often present themselves for consultation because of the loose and lax that is unsightly and uncomfortable. For most patients the skin is evident on their abdomen, arms, and thighs. Dr. Stuart Kincaid will typically recommend an abdominoplastyor body lift to remove excess skin on the abdomen and lower back. For the arms Dr. Stuart Kincaid is likely to recommend brachioplastyor an arm lift which takes care of excess skin on the underside of the upper arm. For the thighs, Dr. Stuart Kincaid will usually recommend a thighliftwhich will remove excess skin on the upper thigh as well as reposition loose skin on the upper buttocks. Dr. Stuart Kincaid has a wealth of reconstructive experience that is beneficial to post massive weight loss patients.   Become a Fan on Facebook    Follow us on Twitter   More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic surgery blog:Food diaries; Is accountability really the key?

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

food scale Plastic surgery blog:Food diaries; Is accountability really the key?It seems as though every time you turn on the television or log onto the Internet there is a new method for succeeding on a diet plan. Most of the claims made for those who have successfully lost weight and kept it off come from some sort of food journal or diary being kept on a daily basis. Typically these are used to track food intake as well as calories. According to a recent Time magazine online article the author recants her tale of strenuous exercise at the gym in a boot camp class, and the fact that she still has not lost any weight. She admits that her boot camp leader recommended that she and the other participants keep a food diary; however, she admits it lasted only about one day. In the article she pledges to go back and try again and is moderately convinced that this will be the key to shedding her excess pounds. Dr. Stuart Kincaid has consulted with a multitude of patients who have been at various stages of the weight loss project in their life. Those who are able to lose weight and maintain a stable weight seek his help because they often have loose and lax skin on their abdomen, thighs, and arms. For these patients, Dr. Stuart Kincaid would typically recommend an abdominoplasty for the abdomen, a thigh lift for the thighs, and an arm lift or brachioplasty for the arms. Each one of these procedures is an invasive procedure and in most cases patients are advised to perform the procedures separately. Dr. Stuart Kincaid meets with each patient individually to help determine the best treatment plan for each patient while not compromising safety or results. Patients could never achieve the results Dr. Stuart Kincaid is able to achieve with surgery through diet and exercise alone.  Become a Fan on Facebook   Follow us on Twitter    More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic surgery blog: FDA to weigh in on tobacco lozenges

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

effects of smoking on skin2 Plastic surgery blog: FDA to weigh in on tobacco lozenges  In our health-conscious country fortunately our government has made strong efforts to not only ban smoking in most places, but also heavily regulate the use of tobacco. It is undisputed that tobacco use is hazardous to our health. According to a  recent online article the FDA is set to weigh in on the safety of tobacco lozenges which are used to help smokers who want to smoke in places where they are not allowed to smoke. According to the article the safety and risks of “dissolvables” are the subject of a three-day U.S. Food and Drug Administration meeting this week.  ”Dissolvables” are flavored mints, strips and sticks of smokeless tobacco. These products are not stop-smoking aids. Instead, they are designed to allow people to satisfy their cravings for nicotine in places where smoking is banned. Dr. Thomas Glynn, director of cancer science and trends at the American Cancer Society, said there are many unknowns about dissolvable tobacco products. “At this point, we don’t know the full range of what is in them,” he said. “I don’t see any potential in these dissolvable products other than to keep people smoking.” These products are of concern to Dr. Stuart Kincaid because the risk associated with smoking and surgery are primarily connected to the use of nicotine products. Patients who utilize smokeless tobacco, nicotine patches, or other devices that contain tobacco are at no less risk than actual cigarette smokers. Dr. Stuart Kincaid informs every new surgery patient during the preoperative process of the specific risk and complications related to patients who smoke. Procedures such as facelift, breast lift, and thigh lift are just a few of the procedures that are specifically of interes,t because of the amount of tension needed to hold together incisions when lifting the skin. Putting tension on skin that is compromised because of prolonged tobacco use can cause delayed wound healing and scarring that is less than aesthetically pleasing. The best case scenario is for patients not to smoke or use tobacco products at all. But, if they are using tobacco products abstaining from those products for a minimum of three weeks prior to surgery and four weeks after surgery is the very minimum recommendation advised. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is committed to helping patients who desire cosmetic plastic surgery and need help to quit the use of tobacco products prior to surgery. Dr. Stuart Kincaid’s patients are intended to be patients for a lifetime so; he and his staff are willing to help patients throughout the entire process                                            Become a Fan on Facebook     Follow us on Twitter  More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic surgery blog:The true cost of obesity

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

Overweight African American Woman1 Plastic surgery blog:The true cost of obesityMost health related conditions including obesity, can take a significant toll on the wallets of not only the obese person, but society as a whole.  According to a recent online health magazine obese people not only earn less but also spend more. According to the article the analysis of data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth revealed that in 2004, overall average annual incomes were $8,666 less for obese women and $4,772 less for obese men compared with normal weight workers. In 2008, obese women made an average of $5,826 (15 percent) less than normal-weight females, the George Washington University researchers said. This is significant because the resources necessary for some to lose weight, especially if they are extremely overweight, can be costly even for those with insurance. Often patients who have lost a significant amount of weight have a large amount of loose and lax skin on their body. Dr. Stuart Kincaid helps post massive weight loss patients understand that while the investment may be significant to reconstruct the body contour after massive weight loss it is well worth the investment. As a member of the American Society of Bariatric Plastic Surgeons,   Dr. Stuart Kincaid is uniquely qualified to handle the challenges that face patients who have been diligent about their weight loss and have maintained a stable weight. Patients often lack the knowledge concerning post-massive weight loss plastic surgery procedures and the complications that can occur when the procedures are performed by inexperienced surgeons. The most popular procedures include extended abdominoplasty, brachioplasty( arm lift), thighplasty (thigh lift) , and breast reduction/breast lift. Patients have a detailed consultation with Dr. Stuart Kincaid to help determine a treatment plan that will allow the patient to get the best value based on the recommended procedures. It is tempting for patients to want all of the procedures performed together, this in many cases is cost prohibitive but is also rarely a safe option. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is excels at helping patients choose the right procedures to achieve the maximum value.

Plastic surgery blog: Will we skip sugary drinks with calorie counts?

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

sodas juices 300x187 Plastic surgery blog: Will we skip sugary drinks with calorie counts?

As the nation pushes toward a better informed consumer population what we eat and drink has become an issue. In light of the obesity epidemic it is not surprising that calorie counting will be mandatory from a restaurant establishments in 2012. A recent local news 10 story looked at sugary drinks and their effect on teenagers who are a large part of their market. According to the story interestingly enough teenagers were less likely to purchase sugary drinks when there was a warning sign associated with the sugary drink choice. The warning signs ranged in content from stating the calories that would be consumed, to the most effective, which was stating the amount of exercise it would take to eliminate the calories once consumed. It is hopeful that in 2012 consumers will not choose sugary drinks once they are given the information concerning how many calories are in each drink. Dr. Stuart Kincaid empathizes with his patients who struggle to maintain a healthy weight. For many this includes eliminating high calorie foods and drinks. On a positive note, many of Dr. Stuart Kincaid’s patients have been able to not only lose the weight but also keep it off. Many of these patients complain about loose and lax skin on their arms abdomen and upper thighs. For these patients Dr. Stuart Kincaid will typically recommend a brachioplasty for the arms. An abdominoplasty for the abdominal pouch of skin that tends to sag after massive weight loss is likely to be the recommendation for some patients. An upper thigh lift is effective for patients who have extreme loose skin on the upper thighs and lower buttocks. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is able to achieve enviable results due to his experience and exceptional credentials specifically for people who are post massive weight loss patients. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is a proud member of the American Society of Bariatric Plastic Surgeons. These  board certified plastic surgeons have specific expertise with the population who has lost weight and desire body contouring procedures with exceptional results.

Plastic surgery blog: Dr Stuart Kincaid has a unique connection to veterans

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

US military Vets Plastic surgery blog: Dr Stuart Kincaid has a unique connection to veteransServing in the Armed Forces brings its own set of circumstances that are different than civilian life. For women, these circumstances and challenges can be devastating in their lives and the lives of their families. A recent news 10 article highlighted one of the less talked about issues that female veterans encounter. Post traumatic  stress syndrome is something we hear about and usually associate with military men fighting in battle. However, with more women in the military and in the field they too are suffering the effects of war including post traumatic stress syndrome. “Women tend to be diagnosed more often, at least with our recent returnees, with depression, whereas men are being diagnosed more often with substance abuse,” says Natara Garovoy, program director of the Women’s Prevention, Outreach & Education Center at VA Palo Alto Health Care System. Recent studies show that PTSD affects about 20% of the women in combat which is about equal to the men. The good news is that according to the article the women are treated and many are able to return to a normal life free of depression. As they move on to their new life some women may consider plastic surgery procedures especially since many of the women have excessive weight gain and then weight loss. They may consider procedures including breast lift, thigh lift, or abdominoplasty. When veterans are considering plastic surgery Dr. Stuart Kincaid is the obvious choice. Dr. Stuart Kincaid has a unique connection to veterans because he proudly served in the US Army Medical Corps from 1984-1988 and was Chief of Plastic Surgery at Tripler Army Medical Center , Honolulu HI  being promoted to Lt. Colonel. Most vets would agree that as a veteran he understands intimately the fears, concerns, and desires veterans have when considering plastic surgery procedures. Most, never thought they would even consider plastic surgery. Dr. Stuart Kincaid puts their fears to rest and helps them to understand that plastic surgery is not always about vanity. Serving our country is a great sacrifice; however, it does not mean that veterans should forget to treat themselves well also.

Plastic surgery blog:Time of day has alot to do with your aches and pains

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

person with a stomach ache2 Plastic surgery blog:Time of day has alot to do with your aches and painsA recent study found that the time of day can increase your risk of the onset of certain aches and pains. This is very interesting because knowing the time when these aches and pains are likely to occur can help to navigate your activities throughout the day and potentially avoid them. According to Mail Online research is increasingly showing that the risk and severity of symptoms vary hugely at different times of the day and night.
‘Like almost all life on the planet, much of human physiology and behaviour is controlled, modulated or at least fine-tuned by an internal 24-hour timer,’ says Professor Russell Foster, circadian neuroscientist at the University of Oxford and the John Radcliffe Hospital. This information can be very helpful as it relates to plastic surgery patients and Dr. Stuart Kincaid’s goal for patients to have the best overall experience. For example, the study stated that the greatest risk for elevated blood pressure is between 6 AM and 10 AM. So, patients who are recovering from procedures including abdominoplasty or thigh lift which are likely to have the patient recovering in bed for the first few days, it is important to note that the early morning hours may not be the best time to walk around for the first time. Perhaps it may be a better idea to wait until early midday. Dr. Stuart Kincaid advises his patients of the importance of maintaining a low and steady blood pressure especially following surgery. Patients should follow all of the Dr. Stuart Kincaid’s postoperative instructions for the best surgical experience and results.

Plastic surgery blog:When Weight loss before and afters become “thinspiration”

Monday, October 24th, 2011

bathroom scale6 Plastic surgery blog:When Weight loss before and afters become thinspirationThe old saying that a picture is worth 1000 words holds true in the marketing of weight loss programs and products. According to a recent article on  women’s website, some worry that before and after photos can cause more pressure to be thin than motivation to be healthy.  The article calls this “thinspiration” .  Eating disorder prevention advocates find weight loss before and after photos damaging; however, others feel progress photos may work for some women. But if they become a fixation, or take the focus off why shedding extra weight is important (because it can cut your risk of diabetes, hypertension, heart attack, etc.), progress photos can go from inspiration to dangerous “thinspiration.” Which is pretty much the opposite of getting healthy.Dr. Stuart Kincaid shares with patients after weight loss the fact that it is not uncommon for patients to feel embarrassed about their excessive loose and lax skin.  The weight-loss ads do not prepare patients for the large amounts of skin that could be evident following massive weight loss.  Dr. Stuart Kincaid performs post massive weight loss plastic surgery procedures that are extremely beneficial to this patient population.  The procedures include thighplasty, abdominoplasty, and brachioplasty.  In most cases, these procedures will need to be performed separately in the best interest of patient safety.  The dramatic difference that Dr. Stuart Kincaid is able to make for his patients could never be achieved through diet and exercise alone.
