Health and happiness – is it all in your head?

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

In a new study released this month, researchers say that much of the aging process is accompanied by a positive feeling towards life if you simply believe it to be so. That’s right – in other words, the older you get, the happier you can feel if you just believe it.

With over 40 million Americans over the age of 65, the study illuminates an interesting fact in the face of the negativity that society has shed on the aging process. Astonishingly, according to Bioscience Technology, aging is viewed by many as the number one health “problem” in America today.

The UC San Diego School of Medicine and Stanford University found that older adults were content with life, with results largely dependent on the individual’s view of aging in general. In other words, the individual’s view on the aging process contributed significantly to overall perceived health and happiness.

“While there is a growing public health interest in understanding and promoting successful aging, until now little published research has combined measures of physical health with cognitive and psychological assessments, in a large and randomly selected sample,” said principal investigator Dilip V. Jeste, MD.

The study looked at factors like chronic disease and disability alongside other criteria including social integration and a self-review of their own health and happiness.

“Sometimes the most relevant outcomes are from the perspective of the subjects themselves,” said Jeste.

The study found that individuals who self-rated their lives as healthy and happy were less likely to succumb to depression as they aged. Factors that increased the likelihood of the individual’s happiness were higher education, perceived good health, and a sense of optimism for the future.

“It was clear to us that, even in the midst of physical or cognitive decline, individuals in our study reported feeling that their well-being had improved with age,” Jeste said.

Increase your feeling of well-being

Sometimes, it takes a little boost to feel better. Health and happiness starts with you, but when you need a little help to feel positive, there’s no harm in doing taking action so long as your doctor approves. For instance, we all know that wrinkles and age spots are not an exciting part of aging, nor do they inspire happiness. In fact, most women avoid the signs of aging at all costs. If you feel like you need help in the aging department, consider a little help from a cosmetic surgeon in San Diego. After all, imagine what a little cosmetic improvement can do to increase our perceived feelings on aging. If you want to start feeling a little more positive on your age, consider:

Botox. This “first line of defense” against aging can do wonders for women who have unwanted wrinkles. Botox treatments can significantly improve the smoothness of your face, and can restore your youthful appearance.

Surgery-free facelift. Sculptra is a great way to achieve a rejuvenated look without the downsides of extensive plastic surgery. Consider getting a surgery-free facelift when wrinkles are starting to catch up with your age.

Eyelid rejuvenation. Blepharoplasty is a great way to get rid of wrinkles, sagginess, and drooping around the eye area. Our eyes are one of the first ways to detect aging since skin can be fragile and thin, and more susceptible to wrinkles.

If you’re considering any of these procedures, give Dr. Kincaid a call at 858-450-4199 and schedule your consultation today. With years of experience and plenty of awards to back up his work, Dr. Kincaid is the board-certified plastic surgeon that women in San Diego turn to for a look that’s natural, beautiful and gracefully you.

What is BB cream?

Monday, December 10th, 2012

If you’ve seen the commercials and wondered, “What is BB cream?” you’re not alone. Many brands ranging from Maybelline to L’Oreal to Garnier have used the term, but what exactly is a BB cream?

“BB cream is your beauty balm or blemish balm,” said Sara Biria, a pro lead artist for Sephora in an article at Fox News. “So, it actually helps to cover, treat, protect, conceal and also hydrate the skin. It’s such a unique formula, but it’s an all-in-one product, and anyone can use it.”

In 2011, the beauty business was booming. Americans were estimated to have spent $10 billion on lotions, potions, powders, and more. And the BB creams have made a remarkable comeback considering that the original BB cream was introduced 40 years ago. In the 1960s, a German dermatologist invented the BB cream to serve a wide array of clientele, marketing it as the “all in one” cream. After its initial craze, it’s now made a complete comeback, taking a piece of the proverbial $10 billion dollar pie.

“It has an anti-aging component, and for many people, it also has an anti-blemish component. So, if you want one product that does it all, this is your product,” a dermatologist told the news source. She added it’s like “liquid gold.”

“So, if you want one product that does it all, this is your product.”

BB creams can be found anywhere from drugstores to department stores. The trick is finding the product that suits your budget and skin type. Try several options as samples prior to committing to one cream. Look for BB creams that have SFP coverage as this can fight the aging process as well. Other ingredients like vitamins and antioxidants are just perks of the BB cream. And even though the BB cream markets itself as the “all in one,” it may be a good idea to stay conservative in your expectations before throwing out all of your other facial beauty products.

“Some products have maybe a grape-citric extract that is an antioxidant,” said another dermatologist who has worked with various BB creams. “It’s OK on its own; (but) I don’t really think it’s going to be an anti-aging product.”

Alternatives to the BB cream

Some women need a “maximum strength” boost that BB creams simply can’t compete with. For instance, Botox, Radiesse, and Sculptra are great ways to combat the signs of aging when used under the advice of a board certified plastic surgeon. Sometimes, a cream just can’t cut it.

To talk more about these options and to schedule your appointment, call Dr. Kincaid at 951-695-9934. Fragrance of the moment: Pizza Hut scent? …and other ways to catch a man’s attention

Saturday, December 8th, 2012

Ladies, listen up. Sometimes a way to a man’s heart is through his… nose. Forget cooking up a delicious meal — just smell like one instead.

A new fragrance by the popular chain Pizza Hut will surely turn heads. As to whether that’s a good thing, well, that’s up in the air. Called “Eau de Pizza Hut,” the fragrance aims to capture the scent of none other than freshly-baked dough.

Sounds kind of delicious, actually.

“It’s amazing how such a simple idea can intrigue people,” said Beverley D’Cruz, the pizza company’s marketing and product development director in Canada. “People have fun eating pizza, so we had some fun doing this.”

The project took foothold after a status update on Facebook asked fans what they would call the smell that wafts out of the pizza box if it were a perfume.

Creative responses like “Eau de Pepperoni” and “Devour by Pizza Hut” were well-received, giving Facebookers a thing to laugh about. One responder came up with the clever “Pizzaz” but the company opted for a very direct name in the end – and “Eau de Pizza Hut” was born.

Incredibly, the status update received over 270 comments in all according to Today.com.

“Somebody said, ‘What if we actually made a perfume?’ So we said, let’s try it,” D’Cruz recalled.

Other ways to catch a man’s attention

Okay, so if wearing doughy-scented perfume isn’t your thing, we’ve got some alternatives that are tried and true. If you’re looking for a little something extra to catch a man’s attention, consider:

Botox. Without having to smell like anything at all, Botox will soften fine lines and wrinkles contributing to a younger-looking you. Botox treatments are an ideal way to “take the edge off” of aging.

Restylane. When you lose a little facial volume, whether it is in your cheeks or in your lips, don’t stuff yourself with doughy pizza slices in hopes it will plump up your face. Opt instead for Restylane injections for that extra volume that can take away years from your face and restore it to a youthful look.

Scupltra. Sometimes the face needs a little more definition.  Consider Sculptra as non-invasive way to get a “mini-facelift” and look amazing in just a few short days of recovery. And you don’t even have to smell like pepperoni!

Call Dr. Kincaid at his centrally located La Jolla office at 858-450-4199 and schedule your consultation today.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Hot Fun in the Summertime … Make Smart Choices!

sun tanning at the beach4 Plastic Surgery Blog: Hot Fun in the Summertime … Make Smart Choices!Summer is here! Although we are in beautiful Southern California, we still revel in the thought of summer and enjoying all that our landscape has to offer. How can something so good be harmful? Dr. Stuart Kincaid reminds his patients that having fun in the sun is fine but you must be careful to do so responsibly. The sun’s rays can be very damaging to the skin. First and foremost, overexposure to the sun is the number one cause of skin cancer including melanoma which is the deadliest form of skin cancer. So, laying out in the sun for a tan is definitely not advised. The tanning bed is also not advised as it too can lead to skin cancer. Overexposure to the sun can also be blamed for premature aging of the skin especially on the face. This includes loose and lax skin along the jaw line as well as a thin and wrinkled skin on the neck. Dr. Stuart Kincaid offers many different options for patients who are making an effort to maintain their most youthful appearance. A vast selection of medical grade skin care products and medical grade skin care treatments are available through his practice. Dr. Stuart Kincaid encourages patients to take advantage of his experienced medical aesthetician and the results she is able to deliver using exceptional products combined with skill and expertise. Dr. Stuart Kincaid also offers a wide range of injectables including Botox, f dermal fillers including Restylane and Juvederm. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is an expert injector for Sculptra Cosmetic which is a filler that uses the patient’s own collagen to gradually replace volume to the face. These noninvasive options can help patients to maintain a youthful appearance and in most cases allow them to delay surgical options by a few years. Dr. Stuart Kincaid and his staff encourage their patients to enjoy the summer and to be diligent about maintaining healthy skin and their most youthful appearance.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Some Say Runners Live Longer

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

women runners Plastic Surgery Blog: Some Say Runners Live LongerAvid runners are usually enthusiastic about their choice of exercise. For many it is a lifestyle. According to a recent online article runners may actually have an advantage when it comes to the longevity of life. According to the article Runners appear to live longer, the new research suggests. However, there is most notably a tipping point, surmised the authors of another new study that analyzed the cardiovascular health of endurance athletes, when the heart no longer benefits and may even suffer damage. The first study, by researchers from the University of South Carolina and the Ochsner Health System, in New Orleans, was presented Saturday at the American College of Sports Medicine meeting, in San Francisco. It reviewed and studied the association between running and cardiovascular-related fatalities in nearly 53,000 adults. Research presented at medical meetings should be regarded as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal. The people who took part in the study were between the ages of 20 and 100 and had undergone a medical exam between 1971 and 2003. All were void of heart disease, cancer and diabetes at the beginning of the study. Researchers found in part that running reduced the risk for fatality when a person did not run more than 20 miles a week, log more than five to seven miles per hour, or run more than two to five times a week, the authors reported.  Dr. Stuart Kincaid consults with many health conscious patients who make running part of their daily regimen. One of the concerns many runners have is a hollowing of the cheeks as they age. Many runners have very low body fat and once the aging process accelerates the loss of fat in the facial area can cause an unattractive skeletal appearance. In these cases Dr. Stuart Kincaid may recommend Sculptra Cosmetic. As an expert injector featured by the Liquid Facelift Association, Dr. Stuart Kincaid uses Sculptra  to help restore fullness where significant facial volume has been lost. Sculptra restores volume to the face gradually so patients enjoy a gradual improvement in contrast to a drastic and quick improvement.  Many health conscious and athletic patients do not want improvements that will look obvious and unnatural. So, Sculptra is an excellent solution. Dr. Stuart Kincaid has earned an excellent reputation with both minimally invasive as well as surgical cosmetic surgery procedures.

Plastic Surgery Blog: San Diego Flunks Air Quality Test; What Does That Mean for Our Skin?

Monday, April 30th, 2012

beautiful skin care4 Plastic Surgery Blog: San Diego Flunks Air Quality Test; What Does That Mean for Our Skin?Air quality has been a problem around the world for years. Here in San Diego the air quality is considered to be among the worst according to a recentnewsarticle. According to the article San Diego’s air quality has improved little by little over the last 10 years, but it still earns an F grade for the amount of pollution that creates health risk to residents, according to a new American Lung Association study. The region ranks #7 for worst ozone pollution among metropolitan areas across the nation and 15th worst for what is called short-term particle pollution in the 13th annual “State of the Air” report that was released last Wednesday. The study reports data from 2008 to 2010. “California continues to have some of the worst air quality in the entire nation,” said Jane Warren, president and chief executive of the American Lung Association in California. “While the fight is ongoing … we must also acknowledge that progress, some would consider it to be significant progress, is being made. We cannot control single-handedly the pollution that exists in areas where we live. We can be proactive about taking care of our health and appearance. Dr. StuartKincaid reminds patients that environmental factors have much to do with the appearance of premature aging. It is imperative that patientstake care of their skin in an aggressive manner to combat environmental factors such as pollution. Dr. Stuart Kincaid offers medical grade skin care products in his practice as well as medical grade skin care treatments. Injectables including Botox, fillers like Juvederm and Restylane help the appearance of facial aging. As a member of the Liquid FaceliftAssociation, Dr. Stuart Kincaid is considered an expert injector of the product SculptraCosmetic. This product allows patients to benefit from the filler that actually grows their own collagen gradually over time. Dr. Stuart Kincaid has had amazing results and patient satisfaction with this product.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Study says Early Menopause Could be Tied to Osteoporosis

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

smiling older woman 300x285 Plastic Surgery Blog: Study says Early Menopause Could be Tied to Osteoporosis As women approach menopause, it can have varying symptoms and effects. According to a recent SanDiegonewsstory a new study says that women who go through early menopause could have a greater risk for osteoporosis later in life. According to the article women who go through menopause early are almost two times as likely to have the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis in their later years, new research shows. Also, researchers from the Skane University Hospital in Malmo, Sweden, pointed out that these women are also at increased risk for fracture and a higher death rate. For the study, the researchers analyzed 390 white women from northern Europe in 1977. The women were 48 years old at that time, and they were divided into two groups: those who went through menopause before the age of 47; and those who started menopause at age 47 or after that time. The women were studied and followed for almost three decades. All of the women had their bone mineral density measured. The study found the women who had early menopause were at increased risk for fragility fracture, death, and osteoporosis. The early menopause group had a death rate of 52 percent, compared to 35 percent among the women who had late menopause. The measure of fractures was also 44 percent among the women who had early menopause in comparison with 31 percent for women who had late menopause. The report of a higher mortality rate in women with an early menopause must be further explored because other factors could affect mortality including medication, nutrition, smoking and alcohol consumption, say medical experts. Dr. StuartKincaid explains to his patients that perimenopause as well as menopause can cause significant hormonal changes that could affect a patient’s appearance. Women most commonly complain about added thickness to their lower abdomen, outer thighs, upper back, and lateral chest wall. These are all areas that can be treated effectively in most patients with liposuction. Dr. Stuart Kincaid targets the specific areas using the liposuctionsuctioning device as a sculpting tool. Patients are thrilled with the results as they are usually more  aesthetically pleasing than results patients can achieve through diet and exercise alone. Patient should also be aware of the loss of fat in their face that often accompanies menopausal hormonal changes. Dr. Stuart Kincaid will typically recommend injections of facial fillersto create a more youthful appearance. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is excited to also offer Sculptracosmetic as a solution for gradually restoring collagen to the areas on the face that appear to be affected by the signs of aging. Dr. Stuart Kincaid welcomes patients in a one-on-one consultation which allows the patient to prepare a viable anti-aging treatment plan with Dr. Stuart Kincaid.       Become a Fan on Facebook     Follow us on Twitter  More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic Surgery Blog: Ashley Judd puffy face explanation

Monday, March 19th, 2012

Ashley Judd Plastic Surgery Blog: Ashley Judd puffy face explanationAccording to a recent article in on MSNBC.com while Ashley Judd was busy  promoting her new TV series, “Missing,” the celebrity’s reps and gossip magazines are in a juicy battle  for information to the questions concerning what’s going on with Judd’s  marshmallow puffy face.RadarOnline.com threw out the first dagger with a March 13 story that declared the actress’s pronounced and chubby cheeks were caused by some extravagant plastic surgery procedure. One of Judd’s representatives quickly released a different explanation. The actress has been “battling an ongoing, serious sinus infection and flu,” they told E! News. Medication, they alleged, had caused the facial puffiness.Dr. Vincent Chan, a Seattle ear, nose and throat doctor specializing in sinus disease, says steroids (commonly used for sinus infections) can cause puffiness, but only when used long term. “Generally, when steroids are given for sinus infection, they’re given for 10 days to two weeks,” he says. “Usually those types of regimens – steroids for sinusitis – don’t cause that sort of problem.” Celebrities face tremendous scrutiny as they are in the public eye all of the time. This can create a difficult problem if the patient has a medical issue that they intended to keep out of the public eye. This appears to have been the case for Ashley Judd. Whether she had a sinus infection or did in fact have some sort of cosmetic plastic surgery procedure, there was a dramatic change in her appearance. Thanks to the media, fans and writers alike were able to express their opinions right away. Dr. StuartKincaid recommends that patients who have to be in the public eye and under scrutiny who are considering plasticsurgery procedures should always allow enough time for complete healing. Some medical professionals have speculated that Ashley Judd had Sculptrainjections. Some speculate that there may have been an overcompensation of product therefore leaving a puffy face. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is considered an expert injector of Sculptra cosmetic. He is a featured member of the LiquidFaceliftAssociation. He instructs patient to be mindful of the medical professional that they choose to perform the injections. Success with the injectable is highly dependent upon the expertise of the injector. Patients should also be aware that when using facial fillers it is a good idea to also consider blepharoplasty as the eyes become much more noticeable once the wrinkled effect has been corrected on the face. Dr. Stuart Kincaid always allows the patient to consider what works best for them.       Become a Fan on Facebook      Follow us on Twitter          More on Dr.Kincaid                                                                                                                                                          ___________________________________

Plastic surgery blog:Should over people over 50 embrace cosmetic surgery?

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

beautiful middle aged woman7 Plastic surgery blog:Should over people over 50 embrace cosmetic surgery?According to a recent Huffington Post article baby boomers are a transformative generation, and they are tackling midlife with the same take charge and no holds barred spirit that has exemplified their lifestyles over the last 50 years. They simply won’t accept aging without a fight. But along with the youthful mind set toward work and health comes the dark side – the unforgiving pressure to look as young as one feels inside, which has propelled the boom in cosmetic surgery. Americans spent $10 billion on procedures in 2011. There are some who swear off the trend. Actress Cate Blanchett, 42, recently told Fashionista.com: “There’s been a decade or so of people doing intervention with their face and their body. Now that we’re emerging from that people are seeing that long term it’s not so great. … In the end if you have all that stuff done. In the end you just see the work. It doesn’t fill me with admiration, it fills me with pity.”  On the other end of the celebrity examples, there’s Joan Rivers, who has reportedly had more than 700 cosmetic procedures. But as she told Huff/Post50: “I don’t give a damn what people think. If you don’t like my opinion, too bad. That’s the only good thing about age.” Dr. Stuart Kincaid understands the difference in opinions between those who are for cosmetic plastic surgery and those who are against it. For every person it is an individual and personal decision. It is easy to state an opinion these days thanks to the Internet. People must remember, they are only opinions and everyone has one. The decision to have plastic surgery must be rooted in a person’s own desires. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is committed to a lengthy initial consultation in which she discusses with his patients the motivation behind their consideration of cosmetic plastic surgery. Patients over 50 typically have more questions and seek solutions and examples rather than a sales pitch. Most patients over 50 consult with Dr. Stuart Kincaid concerning facelift, brow lift, blepharoplasty, or injectable fillers including Sculptra. Dr. Stuart Kincaid has the experience and expertise to help patients make the best decisions according to their lifestyle and individual desires.    Become a Fan on Facebook   Follow us on Twitter    More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic surgery blog:Study says sleeping doesn’t get worse with age

woman sleeping4 Plastic surgery blog:Study says sleeping doesnt get worse with age

Our society has a love-hate affair with sleep and its importance. While we know that it is necessary it can be applauded and denounced in the same setting. A recent Los Angeles Times  article looked at the subject of sleep and the aging population. The fabrication that you are sleep impaired as you get older isn’t legitimate scientists argued in a study distributed Thursday. While elder people may have supplementary sleep disturbances different than younger people, those problems are linked to illnesses and vitality issues and have little to do with aging researchers voiced. The study published in the journal Sleep examined sleep characteristics in a more than 150,000 Americans. The survey participants were asked about sleep disposition, sleep disturbances, and daylight lethargy as well as many questions on race, compensation, education, personality, and their overall health. The research showed that sleep quality tended to enhance over one’s lifetime, except for an uptick in sleep problems brought to notice in middle age, especially among women. People age 80 and older scored first place on sleep quality comparable to other age groups. It’s not appreciable why older people announced fewer sleep disturbances and tiredness the authors said. It could be that older people have more influence over sleep duration while younger people endure more stressors, jobs, kids, and socializing that impinge with sleep. It’s also possible that older people are just more tolerant of sleep quality and don’t complain about it as often. Dr. Stuart Kincaid encourages older patients in his practice to view their plastic surgery choices as smart investments with the expectation that provided they take care of themselves and their health they will benefit long-term. Part of taking care of their health includes making sleep a priority. Patients who utilize facial rejuvenation procedures including injectables like BotoxJuvederm and Sculptra can expect impressive results with little downtime. The length of time any cosmetic surgery procedure will last is heavily dependent upon a patient’s whose health and lifestyle. This includes the proper amount of sleep on a daily basis.
