Botox in Riverside Battles Hand Tremors

Tuesday, July 31st, 2012

Botox in Riverside, and also the most common cosmetic procedure in the U.S., isn’t just used to wage war on wrinkles. Recently studies show Botox can help people dealing muscle tremors. An injection of Botox paralyzes the muscles, which is why the treatment works so well to fight the signs of aging. The muscle under the wrinkles is in a frozen-like state and the skin around it smoothes. According to the New York Times, the paralyzing of the muscle may help people with a condition known as Essential Tremor.

This mysterious ailment, which is most common in people older than 65, causes the uncontrollable shaking of the hands, head or other body parts. Jules Zalon, from New York suffers from this condition. Her tremors occur primarily in her right hand “which makes writing either impossible or at least laughable.” She went to a neurologist and was prescribed medication, but was wary of taking drugs. She heard Botox may be an answer, and started looking into this alternative treatment.

Zalon might be on the right track. A study done by Baylor College of Medicine shows Botox injections in people with hand tremors can decrease the shaking. After injections of Botox, patients saw “significant improvement” four weeks after the treatment. “Botox may significantly ameliorate essential hand tremor in patients who fail to improve with conventional pharmacologic therapy,” the study stated. While the study shows promise, Dr. Elan D. Louis, a professor of neurology and epidemiology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University cautions patients about this alternative treatment. “Intramuscular injections of Botox, or botulinum toxin, may play a limited role in the treatment of wrist and voice tremors in patients with essential tremor. However, many patients with essential tremor not only have wrist tremors but also have shoulder, elbow and finger tremors. As the number of muscles involved increases, the efficacy of these injections decreases.”

The cause of Essential Tremors is unknown. Some doctors believe the twitching happens because of faulty wiring in the brain, others think nerve endings are to blame. Regardless of the cause, the course of treatment should be decided with a doctor. Patients using Botox to fight the symptoms brought on by tremors did experience weakness in the muscles. Some patients worried about the number of injections sites. Because it’s difficult to pinpoint which muscles are causing the tremor, some patients have upwards of 20 injection sites.

While Botox has proved effective in other areas like treating tremors, migraines and bladder problems, its main use is still in the cosmetic world. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 2.6 million people had Botox injections last year. Surgeons say it has been the most sought after treatment for more than a decade, with the number of patients receiving the treatment increasing each year.

The evolution of breast implants

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012

An infographic created by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) illustrates the evolution of breasts over time as an outcome to modern breast augmentation choices.

Statistics reflect positive feedback from women who received breast implants; one of the top plastic surgeries for women today.

The percentages presented in this infographic serve as an illustration of the changes in women’s breast size, enhancement and behavior over the course of time.

In 1997, approximately 101,000 women underwent breast augmentations. In 2011, this number more than tripled, with roughly 317,000 augmentations.

Not only has their been an increase in plastic surgeries, but also the average breast size since 1997 has increased from a 34B to a 36C. A C-cup is the women’s average size breast implant.

Six of the top reasons why women choose to get breast implants include the following: to look better naked (91%), to look better in clothes (84%), they want larger breasts (84%), to feel better about herself (81%), to feel more confident (79%) and to feel less self-conscious (74%).

Prior to the use of FDA-approved saline and silicone implants, women in the early 20th century used substances such as glass balls, ivory, wood chips, peanut oil and ox cartilage to enlarge their breasts.

Now, 31% of women use saline, a solid silicone outer shell filled sterile salt water, and 69% use silicone, an outer shell pre-filled with stable gel.

The common demographics of women to undertake this type of plastic surgery are in their mid-30s, married or in a long-term relationship and received some college education.

A study by realself.com also illustrated the satisfaction rating these women post-surgery. A high majority of women who have received breast augmentation plastic surgery would recommend the surgery, are happy about their decision and reported improvement in their self-confidence.

The correlation between breast augmentation and women’s positive feedback doesn’t stop short of just confidence enrichment. More than half of these women also reported having more frequent sex and a more satisfying sex life.

Hot Cosmetic Trends: Botox in Riverside and Mommy Makeovers

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

A recent survey reveals the hot cosmetic trends of the season. RealSelf.com says Botox in Riverside tops the list of procedures, with many people opting to smooth the lines and wrinkles around their lips and eyes. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the survey also shows a combo procedure known as a “Mommy Makeover” is gaining popularity as well.

When it comes to Botox injections, RealSelf says the plump Angelina Jolie lips are no longer in vogue. “We’re going back again to a little bit more conservative, very natural looking procedures, whether invasive or non-invasive,” one Beverly Hills plastic surgeon told the Spring/Summer 2012 Medi-Beauty Trend Report. “That duck lip is a thing of the past.”

Botox isn’t the only warm weather trend; surgeons are seeing a spike in the number of moms in their office wanting a makeover. The “Mommy Makeover” is a combination of surgeries that may include a tummy tuck, liposuction and breast implants – all done at one time. For a Georgia mother of three, the makeover was her answer to reviving her body. “I was definitely overweight, definitely not where I wanted to be, and it just seemed like it was harder to get back where I was,” Lauren Bays told ABC News. Bays opted for the “Mommy Makeover.” The price tag for such a procedure can run anywhere from $7,000 to $15,000 which covers at least four hours of invasive surgery and bed rest for at least week after the procedure.

Despite the price, surgeons say these procedures are in high demand. “The concept of the mommy makeover is we’re fixing from here to here,” said Bays’ surgeon, Dr. Diane Alexander of Artisan Plastic Surgery in Atlanta, pointing from her breasts to her hips. “We’re fixing the breasts, the belly. Occasionally, women want their muffin top fixed. But the core of it is doing the breasts and the belly together. This is an extremely common procedure. I would say it’s the No. 1 thing we do.”

For Bays, who was having trouble losing the baby weight the traditional way, the procedure was worth it. “I am relatively young — I am 38; I have a lot of good years left — so I think it’s worth it,” Bays said. “I just feel so much better about myself. I guess I didn’t realize effort went into wearing tunics all the time or, you know, just trying to camouflage that part that I didn’t like. I didn’t realize how nice it is to just throw on a t-shirt and not think, ‘Oh, is my stomach sticking out?’ or, ‘My chest doesn’t look perky.’”

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery advises any person thinking about Botox or the “Mommy Makeover” to consult a board-certified surgeon.

How Young is Too Young for Plastic Surgery in Riverside?

Thursday, June 7th, 2012

Breast augmentations remain one of the most common procedures performed by plastic surgeons. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, about 316,000 breast augmentations were performed in 2011. While the procedure is popular, at what age is it appropriate for the procedure to be done? CNN recently spoke with a high school graduate that opted to enhance her cup size before going to college. The parents of the 18-year-old girl supported the decision. It begs the question, how young is too young for cosmetic surgery?

Madison Landis, the teen that received the breast augmentation as a graduation present told CNN, “I feel like it will make me more confident for college and less insecure about myself.” Landis’ parents, who paid for the procedure, said the agreed to it to help their daughter’s self image. “It’s something she felt really strongly about,” Madison’s mom, Tonya Everett, told the news source. “She’s 18 and it’s her body, so we’re willing to support her decision.” The Landis family isn’t alone. One plastic surgeon says cosmetic surgeries are becoming a common gift for teens. “You see it around graduation,” one plastic surgeon told WomensENews.com. “You see it around holidays and spring break, especially around the Christmas season.”

Many plastic surgeons will not operate on a teenager younger than 18, and many encourage the decision to be reached with parents. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, about 5,000 breast augmentations were performed on patients under the age of 18 in 2011. That’s about 1.5 percent of the 316,000 breast augmentations performed last year. Patients ranging in age from 19-34 account for 50 percent of all breast augmentations completed last year.

Surgeons worry about performing procedures on young patients. “Before I perform any procedure, I carefully and thoroughly evaluate my patient’s health and personal motivations for the surgery,” said one doctor in a recent statement. “I conduct this analysis to ensure that my patient is physically healthy and also to make sure that her motivations are realistic.

“As a board-certified plastic surgeon, I am committed to providing my patients with the highest level of safety and quality. If a teenager told me that she wanted a procedure like breast implants at my Harrisburg, PA practice, I would talk with her in-depth about her motivation.” Gayner says he would also question the parents. “Mothers should protect their daughters and instill confidence in them,” Dr. Stratis says. “Then they can make sound decisions for themselves when they reach adulthood.”

Every patient, regardless of age, should discuss the motivation behind the procedure along with expected outcomes with a board-certified surgeon before scheduling any procedure. Call Dr. Kincaid today, a San Diego plastic surgeon, at 951-695-9934.

Unconventional uses for Botox in Riverside

Saturday, May 26th, 2012

A new study shows Botox isn’t just for erasing fine lines and wrinkles; the injections can also fight migraines. Doctors say migraine sufferer’s battle debilitating pain. “Chronic migraine is one of the most disabling forms of headache,” Russell Katz, MD, of the FDA, said. “Patients with chronic migraine experience a headache more than 14 days of the month. This condition can greatly affect family, work, and social life, so it is important to have a variety of effective treatment options available.” According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery one of those options is Botox.

A team of researchers from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee found Botox injections near the head and neck reduced the frequency of migraines and also eased the tension typically caused by them. The effects of Botox were temporary. Just as Botox injections need to be repeated to smooth wrinkles, it also needs to be repeated to treat migraines. Patients using Botox to beat migraines need to receive injections every 12 weeks for continued ease of pain. While Botox did prove effective, researchers say it only treats certain kinds of migraines. “Our analyses suggest that botulinum toxin A may be associated with improvement in the frequency of chronic migraine and chronic daily headaches, but not with improvement in the frequency of episodic migraine, chronic tension-type headaches or episodic tension-type headaches,” the study’s authors wrote in a recent edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The most common side effect reported during this study was head and neck pain. Pain at injection sites was also reported. Patients are typically injected in 10 to 20 different areas around the head and neck. The FDA says Botox doesn’t help those with sporadic migraines and should only be considered by patients with 14 of more migraines a month. While side effects were reported, researchers say it is another option for migraine sufferers that have tried other treatment options with little success.

“If I was having more than 15 migraines a month, I’d give Botox a try,” the study’s lead author, Dr. Jeffrey Jackson, told HealthDay News. “It has few side effects. And, if it helps, you can go 90 days without as many headaches and without daily side effects.”

For patients who want more information about Botox injections in Riverside – especially for unconventional uses – call Dr. Kincaid, a board certified surgeon in Riverside at his centrally located Temecula office: 951-695-9934.

Migrains Plastic surgery may lead to a decrease in migraine headaches

Migraines affect thousands of Americans every day. Those who are affected know that a migraine headache can ruin your day, cause you to miss work, and put a damper on everyday activities. Sometimes, migraines can require medical intervention if they are severe and debilitating enough to cause other health risks. But now, in a new study, patients who want a smoother forehead via plastic surgery might be pleasantly surprised to know that the surgery may also offer patients migraine relief.

The study published at Surgery.org says that brow lift surgery has the potential to provide long-lasting relief to the troubles of migraine headaches. Symptoms of migraine headaches include nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound, and intense pain – and these symptoms can be long-gone with brow lift surgery as the study suggests.

The findings were published as a result of researching 75 study participants who received brow lift surgery to remove migraine muscle and related nerve-tissue. Amazingly, 92 percent of patients who underwent the procedure reported that they were “cured” from future migraine headaches.

Interestingly, over 35 million people suffer from migraines in the United States. Americans who suffer from migraines may have a lot to look forward to as research in this area progresses.

There are also other alternatives to migraine therapy besides plastic surgery. Another option for candidates include Botox injections – a relatively quick, in-office procedure that not only provides a smoother and more youthful appearance, but can also provide temporary relief from migraine headaches.

Not only does the study confirm that Botox is effective at treating migraines, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration also approved the use of Botox as a migraine treatment. Talk to a qualified plastic surgeon in Riverside who specializes in Botox to find out what treatment schedule works best for your needs.

Additional Botox benefits besides migraine control include:

  • Smoother and more youthful skin
  • The reduced appearance of wrinkles around the eyes, forehead, and other facial areas
  • A refreshed appearance akin to looking several years younger without having to undergo plastic surgery

Americans want plastic surgery but are often deterred by cost

Capture5 Americans want plastic surgery but are often deterred by cost

What if you could achieve the look you’ve always wanted at a price that you could easily afford? In a new study published at the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, it seems that 23 percent of Americans would get plastic surgery if cost didn’t matter.

The survey conducted at CouponCabin.com found that 2,500 adults would like to improve their look if cost was not a part of their beauty equation. And women were more likely to want plastic surgery as opposed to men, although the margins were still surprisingly thin – 28 percent of women as opposed to 18 percent of men would opt for surgery if cost were a non-issue.

Of course, the cost for some of the most popular plastic surgery – breast implants, nose jobs, tummy tucks, and facelifts – can vary widely as the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports. Along with the study at CouponCabin.com, ASAPS found that the majority of Americans approve of plastic surgery by a whopping 51 percent regardless of their social status or economical background including income level – a number that has increasingly grown over the last five years.

“As the numbers suggest, people in every income bracket, single or married, male or female, view plastic surgery as a reasonable option today,” said Dr. Felmont F. Eaves III, ASAPS past president. “Taking care of yourself and paying attention to physical appearance is increasingly important to everyone. As both traditional surgical procedures have been improved and refined, and new nonsurgical options have become available, aesthetic plastic surgeons have more to offer to our patients.”

Liposuction in Riverside can be the answer to achieving a flat stomach

There’s no doubt that a flat stomach is one of the most prized body features for both men and women. Sexy abs can be flaunted in a revealing top, a bikini, or at the gym – and while many want a hard, flat stomach, not all are so lucky to actually have it unless diet, exercise, and/or Riverside plastic surgery are considered. In fact, as Surgery.org reports, very few women over the age of 25 are actually able to achieve the dream of having flat stomachs. But as New York City personal trainer Leandro Carvalho explains, getting flat abs can be “the easiest part of your body to change….much easier than trying to reshape your legs or behind.”

With that in mind, Allure magazine took up Cavalho to the challenge by enlisting staff members to his care in order to achieve the endlessly-sought flat stomach.

One staff member complained of a muffin top – the undesirable fat that can often spill over on the side and the front of a well-meaning pair of jeans. But after spending 25 minutes using a medicine ball two to three times a week for six weeks, she was able to trim off 4 pounds and 2 inches.

Another Allure staff member was put on a rigorous 90 minute routine, three to four times per week. Although she lost 4.5 inches, Carvalho told her to stop eating food favorites like cheese, potatoes, and pasta. The staff member said she will try to accommodate the new diet, but that the exercise routine would likely take a backseat.

An editor who said she was diligent at exercising daily still complained of stomach excess – no flat stomach for her. After starting an exercise program of abs classes and weights, the woman was able to shed off 3 inches and five pounds without the intervention of liposuction or other plastic surgery methods.

When exercise is not enough: liposuction in Riverside

Some women are able to achieve a flat stomach and great results with an exercise program in place and diet modification. But for those who need more help than diet and exercise alone, many women turn to liposuction for the body sculpting results they want.

Learn more about how to achieve a flat tummy with these popular procedures.

Liposuction in Riverside

One of our most popular body contouring procedures is liposuction.  Many women opt for this surgery to remove excess fat in stubborn areas like the abs, legs, and buttocks. SmartLipo is a great alternative for women who want a quicker solution to removing excess fat. However, for more advanced body contouring, some women turn to more advanced procedures in order to achieve the desired look.

Tummy Tuck in Riverside

Abdominoplasty is often referred to as a “tummy tuck” is an advanced surgical procedure that can remove excess fat and sagging skin while gently rearranging the underlying muscle structure. The result is a beautiful, flatter stomach. Many women turn to tummy tuck surgery in San Diego since it can completely transform the way the midsection appears including a reduced appearance of stretch marks.

How you sleep may determine your need for cosmetic surgery

Capture4 How you sleep may determine your need for cosmetic surgery

Did you know that sleeping in a certain position can increase – or reduce, for that matter – fine lines and wrinkles?

It’s quite possibly true. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery is reporting that wrinkles, especially those found around the mouth, can be avoided by improving sleeping habits and the position in which one sleeps. In other words, the way you sleep can determine whether or not you may need plastic surgery in the future.

Experts believe that sleep position contributes most to how wrinkles develop on your face. For instance, if you sleep on your stomach or on your side, you may be pushing your face in ways that can produce wrinkles around your mouth. Over time, those positions can cause permanent wrinkles according to CBS42.

If you’re worried about your sleeping patterns and if you can already see the signs of aging, consider sleeping with a pillow tucked between the knees to avoid rolling around. Also, invest in good bedding material like a high-thread count sheet set, which may help lead to a better rest.

Facial rejuvenation in Riverside

If you’re considering minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures in Riverside, Dr. Kincaid has several options that can be completed in just a few hours. These procedures are just some of the options available. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Kincaid to find out which cosmetic procedure is best for you.

Chemical peels in Riverside

A chemical peel is a great way to rejuvenate facial areas that are not yet affected by deep wrinkles. If you’re just now seeing the affects of fine lines, or are concerned about sun damage or unevenly pigmented skin, a chemical peel will slough off the skin’s top layers, revealing a more youthful skin underneath.

Botox in Riverside

If you have fine lines and wrinkles that need a little more help, consider Botox Cosmetic – a safe way to help introduce a more youthful appearance. Botox is highly sought as a generally safe and easy way to reduce wrinkles while being minimally-invasive.

Juvederm in Riverside

For deeper wrinkles, many men and women opt for injectable fillers. If your sleep patterns have contributed to  deep wrinkles around the mouth, Juvederm is a generally great choice to reduce their appearance, contributing to a smoother and more youthful look.

Dr. Kincaid is a certified plastic surgeon in Riverside who can help you achieve a natural and long-lasting look through minimally-invasive procedures. Schedule a consultation now to determine which procedure is right for you.

Online dating sparks San Diego plastic surgery trend: how can you achieve the look you want?

babyboomer Online dating sparks San Diego plastic surgery trend: how can you achieve the look you want?

Photo Credit: American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

Now that online dating has revolutionized the way people find their perfect match, more and more men and women are turning to plastic surgery to achieve the look they desire. And the trend makes sense – after all, many of us are compelled to present the best version of ourselves to the outward world. Although cosmetic surgery transcends the limits of age, it’s baby boomers that are more likely to achieve the look they want for purposes of online dating.

In a new survey at a popular dating site for those born between 1946 and 1964, people who are unmarried are more likely to consider companionship a top priority than they ordinarily did in their youth. And in another study published by CNN, another popular dating site says that online dating is the number one way to meet the perfect match, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

For those new to the online dating world, a profile all starts with your photo – and one that was taken at least a few years ago. While the instinct to post a more youthful picture is tempting, online daters are cautioned against uploading a too-young photo of themselves. And that’s where San Diego plastic surgery can help. A few of our most popular procedures can dramatically enhance the way you look in your photos, not to mention the way others will respond to your online dating profile.

“Young people tend to go for looks, period,” University of Washington sociology professor Pepper Schwartz said in a statement to the Associated Press.  ”Older people often have a little bit more leeway on what somebody looks like, but then they have all these other kinds of requirements that may or may not be realistic.”

Cosmetic enhancements to consider

If you’re looking for a reasonably fast procedure to help reverse the signs of aging, consider the following cosmetic surgery procedures in La Jolla or Temecula.

Botox – San Diego

Come see Dr. Kincaid for an instant uplifting experience with Botox injections in San Diego – a simple procedure that helps smooth fine lines and wrinkles. Most Botox procedures produce the age-softening result that many women want, and the cost is relatively affordable and the recovery is generally fast.

Juvederm – San Diego

Consider Juvederm injections for increased face fullness. As men and women age, natural fullness is lost in the cheekbones, forehead, and nasal labial folds of the face. Restoring this youthful look is accomplished by the use of injectable fillers.

Microdermabrasion – San Diego

Over time, aging skin can look dull and lifeless. Many men and women choose microdermabrasion for increased skin suppleness and a more youthful glow. Because microdermabrasion is minimally invasive, most patients can expect results within a few days.
