Patients who are considering plastic surgery rarely do so on a whim. Most patients have been thinking about it for a long time and then finally make the decision to move forward. In most cases, it makes sense to begin the research phase of the process as soon as the patient is considering surgery. This is especially important for patients who are considering complex surgeries like post massive weight loss procedures including thigh lift, arm lift, or body lift. Gathering information from reliable sources on the Internet, the ASPS website, and other medical resources can prove valuable in providing background information for the patient. Once the patient has gathered enough research it is time to approach the consultation phase. This is a good time to put together a resource tablet so that patients can refer to questions that they have as they proceed with their consultation. Dr. Stuart Kincaid stresses to his patients, in the initial consultation that it is important to understand that plastic surgeons could vary in their recommendation for the patient. This does not mean necessarily that one plastic surgeon is correct and the other is wrong in their recommendation. A plastic surgeon makes a recommendation based on what he or she is comfortable with in their own hands. For this reason, it can be extremely confusing if a patient has numerous consultations. It is much more effective if patients make a decision prior to the consultation concerning which qualities and characteristics must be present in the practice and with the plastic surgeon that they choose. For example, is important that your plastic surgeon is located within a 20 mile radius of your home, or is it important that your plastic surgeon has a certain number of years of experience? These should be decided before making your first consultation so that it becomes much more effective when making the final decision. Dr. Stuart Kincaid typically encourages patients to make their consultation fairly close- to when they are actually ready to schedule there surgery. If the consultation is too far in advance of when the patient is ready for surgery, it is likely that many things could have changed and the recommendation may no longer be valid. Dr. Stuart Kincaid welcomes patients to schedule a consultation to determine which plastic surgery procedures are best for them.

Weight bias is frowned upon and in many states illegal. According to a recent local onlinenewsarticle research that was published recently in the International Journal of Obesity, used 95 raters who were were New Zealand undergraduate students, and weren’t aware that weight bias was the real focus of the study, to evaluate potential candidates for employment. “Clearly, these were not actual employers,” said study co-author Janet Latner, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Hawaii. “But they are people who will enter the workforce, and the underlying prejudice that they’re displaying could ultimately affect their decisions regarding future colleagues.” The students involved in the study — mostly female — received information packages on “candidates” to rate them for a potential managerial position. The fake resumes were equivalent as far as skills, experience and education. The women were shown in the photos that had been located on websites. To eliminate other appearance-based biases, the six women were of similar ages, from 29 to 32, and of European descent. The women had all been massive weight loss surgery patients. Before surgery, (BMI) ranged from 38 to 41. A BMI of 30 or more is considered obese. After surgery, the women’s BMI ranged from 22 to 24, which is considered normal weight. The student “employers” evaluated candidates for starting salary, leadership potential and chances of being hired. Based on the ratings, bigger women had less chance of being offered a position. And if they managed to pass that obstacle, they were still offered lower salaries and limited career progression. Interestingly, the more attractive the raters considered themselves, the greater the weight bias they showed, researchers discovered. Although men were not included in the study researchers theorized that weight biases could be inflicted on them as well. Dr. StuartKincaid empathizes with post massive weight loss patientswho often present themselves for consultation because of the loose and lax that is unsightly and uncomfortable. For most patients the skin is evident on their abdomen, arms, and thighs. Dr. Stuart Kincaid will typically recommend an abdominoplastyor body lift to remove excess skin on the abdomen and lower back. For the arms Dr. Stuart Kincaid is likely to recommend brachioplastyor an arm lift which takes care of excess skin on the underside of the upper arm. For the thighs, Dr. Stuart Kincaid will usually recommend a thighliftwhich will remove excess skin on the upper thigh as well as reposition loose skin on the upper buttocks. Dr. Stuart Kincaid has a wealth of reconstructive experience that is beneficial to post massive weight loss patients. Become a Fan on Facebook Follow us on Twitter More on Dr.Kincaid

The link between heart disease and obesity has become even more evident. According to recent onlinearticle a large new study links heart disease and obesity. According to the article a large new study is the first to prove a specific association between a high body-mass index and the risk of developing heart disease, British and Danish researchers say. Body-mass index (BMI) is a measurement that uses height and weight as a basis. People with a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 are considered to be of normal weight while those with a BMI of 30 or more are considered obese. Those who fall in between are considered to be overweight. For the study, the researchers closely studied data from more than 75,000 people in Copenhagen and found that those with a high BMI had a 26 percent higher risk of developing heart disease. Further study using genetic and other information showed that a BMI increase of 4 points increases the likelihood of developing of heart disease by at least 52 percent. Using epidemiological studies in combination with genetic analysis, we have been able to prove in a group of nearly 76,000 persons that a high BMI is enough alone to damage the hear Borge Nordestgaard, chief physician at Copenhagen University Hospital, summarized in a university news release. Many of Dr. StuartKincaid‘s patientswho previously suffered from obesity and a high BMI were able to lose the weight and maintain a stable healthy weight. Most decided to have plasticsurgery following major weight loss because of excessive skin in common areas like the upper arms, outer thighs, and abdomen. Many patients reduced their risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other conditions by losing the weight and adopting a healthy lifestyle. There is no other way to rid the body of the loose and lax skin except for post massive weight loss surgical procedures. Dr. Stuart Kincaid explains that these procedures include a brachioplastyfor the arms, a thighplasty for the thighs, and an abdominoplastyfor the abdomen. These procedures are typically performed in stages to ensure patient safety and optimal results. Become a Fan on Facebook Follow us on Twitter More on Dr.Kincaid

The benefits of weight loss are numerous. According to recent online article a new study shows there are even more reasons to maintain a healthy and stable weight. According to thearticle moderate weight loss decreases the levels of inflammation that have been associated with certain cancers, especially in postmenopausal women, a new study suggests. According to the study conclusions, older women who reduced 5 percent of their body weight through solely diet or diet combined with exercise experienced impressive reductions in key inflammatory blood markers including C-reactive protein and interleukin-6. Not including the risk for heart disease, elevated levels of these markers have also been linked to other elevated risk for many other cancers, including breast, colon, lung and endometrial cancer. The findings appear May 1 in the journal Cancer Research. Dr. StuartKincaid consults with many women who have successfully lost a large amount of weight and are unhappy with the loose and lax skin that is left behind. For many patients the excess skin can be discouraging after the long battle to lose the weight and keep it off. Dr. Stuart Kincaid encourages his patients by letting them know that plasticsurgery after weight loss is an excellent investment in their new lifestyle. For many patients the areas that are most bothersome include the arms, abdomen, and thighs. For these patients Dr. Stuart Kincaid will typically recommend a brachioplastyfor the upper arms. This procedure allows him to remove the skin and create more toned looking arms. For the abdomen he will typically recommend an abdominoplastywhich not only removes the loose and lax skin but also allows him to tighten the muscle for a flat and more aesthetically pleasing shape. For the thighs, he will usually recommend a thighliftwhich will allow him to remove the loose skin and create a more proportionate overall body shape. Patients who have plastic surgery after major weight loss are overwhelmingly pleased with their results. There is no way through diet or exercise that patients can tighten loose skin. As an ASPS board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Stuart Kincaid possesses the experience and skill to provide these reconstructive procedures expertly. Most health related conditions including obesity, can take a significant toll on the wallets of not only the obese person, but society as a whole. According to a recent online health magazine obese people not only earn less but also spend more. According to the article the analysis of data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth revealed that in 2004, overall average annual incomes were $8,666 less for obese women and $4,772 less for obese men compared with normal weight workers. In 2008, obese women made an average of $5,826 (15 percent) less than normal-weight females, the George Washington University researchers said. This is significant because the resources necessary for some to lose weight, especially if they are extremely overweight, can be costly even for those with insurance. Often patients who have lost a significant amount of weight have a large amount of loose and lax skin on their body. Dr. Stuart Kincaid helps post massive weight loss patients understand that while the investment may be significant to reconstruct the body contour after massive weight loss it is well worth the investment. As a member of the American Society of Bariatric Plastic Surgeons, Dr. Stuart Kincaid is uniquely qualified to handle the challenges that face patients who have been diligent about their weight loss and have maintained a stable weight. Patients often lack the knowledge concerning post-massive weight loss plastic surgery procedures and the complications that can occur when the procedures are performed by inexperienced surgeons. The most popular procedures include extended abdominoplasty, brachioplasty( arm lift), thighplasty (thigh lift) , and breast reduction/breast lift. Patients have a detailed consultation with Dr. Stuart Kincaid to help determine a treatment plan that will allow the patient to get the best value based on the recommended procedures. It is tempting for patients to want all of the procedures performed together, this in many cases is cost prohibitive but is also rarely a safe option. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is excels at helping patients choose the right procedures to achieve the maximum value.

We’ve been inundated with infomercials and celebrity endorsers who swear by the value of “purifying” and “cleansing” our bodies. Unfortunately, most of these concoctions are just glorified laxatives. A recent online health site advised against the detoxifying diets and warned consumers of their harmful effects. According to the article “These [cleansing] diets are a very limited, short-term fix, and the research shows that the [weight] loss cannot be sustained.” says Katherine McManus, a registered dietitian and director of nutrition at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston (affiliated with Harvard Medical School). What’s more, McManus has seen no scientific evidence that detox diets boost energy, rev up your metabolism or aid your health in any other way. These detoxifying diets can actually be harmful and they can cause diarrhea and dehydration. Dr. Stuart Kincaid advises his patients who are desperate to lose weight that quick fixes rarely work. Provide a patient is healthy and not extremely overweight, cosmetic surgery procedures including liposuction can help to tone the body and create better contour thus achieving the effect that many patients are pursuing. If loose and lax skin is a concern in the abdominal area and abdominoplasty allows Dr. Stuart Kincaid to remove the excess skin and also tighten the muscle which in turn creates a very flat abdomen. Many patients can benefit from both of these body contouring procedures especially if they take advantage of their benefits before too many pounds have been gained. Dr. Stuart Kincaid advises patients that the best long-term results following body contouring procedures can only be maintained if the patient is diligent about maintaining a consistent and healthy weight.

Once many of us realize the importance of regular activity it’s tempting to choose running or jogging as a way to whip our bodies in shape. Many people are surprised to learn that they can gain tremendous benefits from walking. According to a recent article posted online, within three months of hitting your stride, you will have boosted blood flow to your brains by 15 per cent , plus lowered your blood pressure and heart rates about 5 per cent . If you step lively and cover about six miles a week — easy to do if you walk 30 minutes a day — you’ll also help keep your brain from shrinking and even increase your memory. Dr. Stuart Kincaid helps his patients to understand that moderate exercise such as walking can be beneficial after surgery as well. Patients who have had procedures such as abdominoplasty, body lift, or facelift can reduce the risk of complications including pulmonary embolism which is a very serious complication. Dr. Stuart Kincaid advises patients that they should not be sedentary and should move around after surgery. This includes a brisk walk increasing in distance and speed as the patient is able to tolerate it. Contrary to what some may believe, even though there may be pain and discomfort while moving around initially, patients recover much quicker when they are walking a little bit each day. If patients are unsure about their postoperative recovery instructions including exercise and walking they should communicate all questions and concerns immediately to Dr. Stuart Kincaid. It is also advised that patients continue walking and exercise to maintain their best long-term results.

The old saying that a picture is worth 1000 words holds true in the marketing of weight loss programs and products. According to a recent article on women’s website, some worry that before and after photos can cause more pressure to be thin than motivation to be healthy. The article calls this “thinspiration” . Eating disorder prevention advocates find weight loss before and after photos damaging; however, others feel progress photos may work for some women. But if they become a fixation, or take the focus off why shedding extra weight is important (because it can cut your risk of diabetes, hypertension, heart attack, etc.), progress photos can go from inspiration to dangerous “thinspiration.” Which is pretty much the opposite of getting healthy.Dr. Stuart Kincaid shares with patients after weight loss the fact that it is not uncommon for patients to feel embarrassed about their excessive loose and lax skin. The weight-loss ads do not prepare patients for the large amounts of skin that could be evident following massive weight loss. Dr. Stuart Kincaid performs post massive weight loss plastic surgery procedures that are extremely beneficial to this patient population. The procedures include thighplasty, abdominoplasty, and brachioplasty. In most cases, these procedures will need to be performed separately in the best interest of patient safety. The dramatic difference that Dr. Stuart Kincaid is able to make for his patients could never be achieved through diet and exercise alone.

Some health experts have referred to United States as a “fast food nation” – that is, one in which folks are used to grabbing food on the go (and paying far too little attention to its nutritional value). Now, years of nutritional neglect have left one in three Americans obese; and with numbers like that, it’s no surprise that many have opted to have weight loss surgery. The new lap band surgery, for example, places a band around the stomach to limit the amount of food the stomach can hold and suppress the appetite. But according to The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the dramatic changes caused by this and other major weight loss procedures often lead to the need for plastic surgery.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that 34 percent of adults in the U.S. are obese. “During the past 20 years, there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States,” the government agency said in an online statement. The shift has led to thousands of weight loss surgeries: according to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, about 220,000 people with morbid obesity in the U.S. had bariatric surgery in 2009 alone. While the procedure is successful for many patients, it can leave behind excess or sagging skin that has to be surgically removed.
As noted by industry experts, excess skin and fat can be physically and emotionally uncomfortable for weight-loss patients. For many, plastic surgery is supposed to be the final step on a long journey to a better body – and the resultant loose skin doesn’t factor in until after the fact. In many cases, however, several body-contouring surgeries are needed to handle all of the problem areas, which include the face, neck, under arms, breasts and buttocks. Different procedures are prescribed for each area. A lower body lift will remove excess skin and tighten up the thigh and buttocks area. To battle a “turkey neck,” meanwhile, a face lift or neck lift may be needed. Surgeons say the procedures all depend on the needs and expectations of their client and are typically spread out over the course of several months.
A complete transformation — with nationally recognized San Diego surgeon Dr. Stuart Kincaid
Because of the many potential problem areas involved in weight loss surgery, it is critical that patients find a surgeon who looks at the big picture – and takes their goals for a better body and a better life as seriously as they do. With nearly 30 years of experience in the field and firm commitment to thorough patient care, Dr. Stuart B. Kincaid is an ideal source for information on body contouring procedures and other cosmetic plastic surgeries. Dr. Kincaid is well known for his understanding, compassion and top quality results: to learn more and schedule a consultation, email Dr. Kincaid at skincaidmd@aol.com, or call 1-866-BEST-IMAGE, our San Diego/La Jolla office (858-450-4199) or our Temecula/Riverside location (951-695-9934) today.

According to news 10 Can people be bribed into better health? The British government is increasingly convinced they can.
For decades, doctors have tried to persuade people to quit smoking, exercise more and lose weight. But with mixed success on the exhortation front and facing a rising obesity crisis, British officials are slowly abandoning the health argument and fattening peoples’ wallets instead.
The U.K. has tested several programs that pay people to make healthy choices. Although the trials have been small, officials say they have been successful enough to roll them out further. This week, the government announced it will give out five million 50-pound vouchers to families that can be swapped for fruits and vegetables.
”We will be expanding programs that use financial incentives for healthy behavior where the evidence supports it,” said a Department of Health spokesman who did not want to be named, in line with government policy. Some health experts, however, say it’s difficult to change people’s habits and warn the cash strategies may backfire. Critics also question whether the government’s limited health funds could be better used elsewhere.
Interestingly enough in the US financially incentivized health advocacy has not been very successful. For those patients who have lost excessive amounts of weight Dr. Stuart Kincaid offers cosmetic plastic surgery procedures that will allow them to wear clothing that fits much better by removing large amounts of excess skin. For the arms the procedure is known as brachioplasty. This takes care of what can appear to be “wings “of excess skin. For the abdomen an abdominoplasty will remove the abdominal skin flap. And for the thighs a thigh lift will help tremendously to obtain a more shapely leg. These procedures may need to be staged in order to achieve the best results and recovery.
