Is a Facelift Old School?

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

woman looking in mirror2 Is a Facelift Old School? With all the hype concerning lasers, injectables, and nonsurgical facial rejuvenation options it’s easy to believe that a facelift is old-fashioned or old-school. Before patients shoot down the idea of having a facelift they first need to be clear about what it is they would like to achieve. Dr. Stuart Kincaid offers a full range of both nonsurgical as well as surgical facial rejuvenation options; so, therefore he has no hidden agenda in recommending one approach over the other. Patient should understand that a facelift has specific benefits that are unable to be achieved through nonsurgical or minimally invasive procedures. A facelift is a longer-lasting effect and is proven to achieve an appearance that looks about 7 to 10 years younger than a patients stated age. This is a lifelong effect even as the patient ages, it is still visible. Also, if a patient has extreme loose skin in the lower half of the face and also has loose and lax skin on the neck minimally invasive procedures may diminish the appearance that they will not tighten the skin enough to give the same result as a surgical facelift. Typically, the older a patient is when they begin to consider facial rejuvenation procedures the less likely they are to see a dramatic benefit, if they choose minimally invasive procedures over a surgical facelift. Skin laxity diminishes with age and the best results will always be in a younger patient with healthier skin. The best combination for most patients is a surgical facelift combined with injectables including Juvederm and Botox. Also Sculptra which gradually replaces volume in the face with the patient’s own collagen can be used after a facelift to achieve an even more youthful appearance in the nasolabial folds. Laser skin resurfacing is also an excellent adjunct to a surgical facelift. A facelift is not a procedure of the past. It remains one of the best values for patients based on the money invested. Dr. Stuart Kincaid welcomes patients to schedule a consultation to determine which facial rejuvenation procedures are best for them.

Are Treatments for Migraines in the Plastic Surgeon’s Office?

Monday, June 25th, 2012

women drinking wine2 Are Treatments for Migraines in the Plastic Surgeons Office? For the millions of people that suffer from migraine headaches, it is important to know what triggers them as well as treatments that work to reduce the symptoms. According to a recent local article weather and red wine may be triggers for some patients. According to the article recent research published and presented this week at the annual meeting of the American Headache Society in Los Angeles, both weather and red wine could  trigger the excruciating headaches, but not necessarily consistently for all patients. One admittedly small study analyzed 33 adults in Brazil who referred to themselves regular red-wine drinkers and have come to believe that the beverage had been caused of migraines in the past. They were asked to drink half a bottle (375 milliliters) of a Malbec, Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot wine from South America a minimum of four days apart. Most of the participants reported having a migraine at the minimum one time within 12 hours of drinking wine; it appears as though certain wines were more likely to cause migraines than others — specifically Tannat and Malbec. Both varieties include higher levels of flavonoids known as tannins, which create red wine’s rich coloring. Admittedly, the study was not a controlled one which must be considered, the lead author Dr. Abouch Krymchantowski, added “I concluded that the wines with the highest content of tannins — Tannat and Malbec — are those which triggered migraines more frequently.” A separate study also being presented at the meeting discovered that outside temperature can also trigger migraines, especially among people who are more sensitive to temperature.  Dr. Stuart Kincaid has consulted with patients under different circumstances who suffer from migraine headaches. As an experienced ASPS board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Stuart Kincaid has seen firsthand the benefits of treating patients who suffer from migraine headaches with a combination of cosmetic surgery procedures. It is well documented that for some patients Botox treatments which are FDA approved for the treatment of migraines can help to reduce the symptoms and frequency of the headaches. For some patients combining a brow lift with Botox treatments can also be extremely effective. It is important for patients to note that migraine treatments and the effectiveness can vary greatly from patient to patient. It is unlikely that insurance will cover the brow lift or and many cases Botox treatments for the treatment of migraine headaches. However, it is important for patients to recognize that the cosmetic benefit is a substantial. For patients who suffer from migraines it is not unlikely for them to have a furrow in the brow because of contracting the muscles over time. This will be treated by the brow lift and the appearance of the forehead will be much smoother and younger looking. Botox treatments will also help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the forehead and the crows feet on the outer corners of the eyes, but the results are temporary. Dr. Stuart Kincaid encourages patients to consult with him concerning the benefits of a brow lift combined with Botox treatments so that they may determine if the benefits of the treatment are worth the investment.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Men Need To Wear Sunscreen Too!

Friday, June 15th, 2012

balding man Plastic Surgery Blog: Men Need To Wear Sunscreen Too!It is not uncommon to hear men say emphatically that they don’t believe they need to wear sunscreen. There are a number of reasons why they have this belief, but none of them are correct. According to a recent local article the Skin Cancer Foundation estimates that in excess of 90 percent of malignant skin cancer is directly related to excessive exposure to the sun with little, if any at all sunscreen being used. Studies have proven that daily use of sunscreen can lessen your risk of developing melanoma by up to 50 percent or more. Men who are bald or balding, including those with thinning hair or a receding hairline need to be especially careful in the summer months to be certain that their scalp is adequately covered. The scalp is often overlooked and is a part of the body that is largely vulnerable to both the UVA and UVB sun rays. It’s critical for men to make sunscreen part of their daily regimen. One way to help make sunscreen a routine is to keep it close to your toothbrush or razor, and to utilize a sunscreen product that contains an SPF 50-plus. Another method is to utilize sunscreen as an aftershave, and making sure to apply it to both the scalp and ears. Dr. Stuart Kincaid consults with men who are concerned with aging of the face. Often this is due to many years of neglecting the use of sunscreen. Some men are concerned that they may not be a candidate for a facelift due to thinning hair or a receding hairline. Dr. Stuart Kincaid explains that with his skill and surgical expertise he makes an effort to suggest facial rejuvenation procedures that will keep incisions well hidden. Dr. Stuart Kincaid may recommend an endoscopic brow lift which would keep incisions very small. As men age many can also benefit from a blepharoplasty which Dr. Stuart Kincaid will typically perform at the same time. Men should be diligent about maintaining their best appearance.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Omega-3 Supplements Do Not Help and Aging Brain

Thursday, June 14th, 2012

Omega 3 Plastic Surgery Blog: Omega 3 Supplements Do Not Help and Aging BrainVitamin supplements are more sought after today than any other time in history. With the popularity of the Interne,t information continues to swirl about the benefits of supplements including omega-3. According to recent study the hype may be more substantial been the reality. According to the article taking omega-3 fatty acid supplements, including fish oil capsules, doesn’t appear to make a difference in older people hoping to maintain their brain health, researchers report. A number of studies have implied that omega-3 fatty acids could help keep nerve cells in the brain healthy well into old age, but there is restricted proof of the role of these fatty acids in avoiding dementia or reduced mental abilities — known as “cognitive decline.” Participants of the study who consumed omega-3 fatty acid-containing capsules or margarine did not perform any better on standard tests of mental abilities or on tests of memory and verbal skills, as substantiated by the findings published in The Cochrane Library. Patients make every effort to maintain their health as they age. Mental alertness and brain health are an essential part of any health maintenance program. Dr. Stuart Kincaid encourages his patients to make a concerted effort to assure that there appearance is as youthful as their healthy mind and body. Patient should begin to address the signs of aging as soon as they are evident. This could mean considering noninvasive procedures like Sculptra Cosmetic or surgical procedures like a facelift, or blepharoplasty. Patient should never believe that they are too old to consider plastic surgery. Provided the patient is healthy, there are no age limits for elective cosmetic surgery. For some patients considering facial rejuvenation surgery seems frivolous if they are older. The reality is with patients living longer lives than ever before it is quite common for older patients to want to maintain their most youthful appearance.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Severe Hypertension May Have a New Treatment

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

high blood pressure2 Plastic Surgery Blog: Severe Hypertension May Have a New TreatmentHeart disease is the number one killer of women. One of the indicators of possible heart disease is high blood pressure. Many women do not even know that they have it. According to recent local article a new treatment may make it easier to control. According to the article even though there are an arsenal of drugs, millions of people in the United States still have their blood pressure at unsafe levels. Now, in a somewhat unconventional experiment at dozens of hospitals, scientists are testing a significantly different approach for the parties to treat patients, by destroying some overactive nerves throughout the body that can accelerate rising blood pressure. To try an invasive treatment – a catheter is threaded through blood vessels in the groin up to the kidneys – this treatment shows doctors’ frustration with a disease that is so many times underrated because people with it don’t look or feel sick until it is too late because the damage has been done. Dr. Stuart Kincaid sometimes meets with patients who are unaware that their blood pressure is elevated. This is more the case with older patients who consult with Dr. Stuart Kincaid for procedures like facelift, brow lift, or blepharoplasty. Dr. Stuart Kincaid explains to patients that it is imperative that their blood pressure is under control prior to surgery especially for facial rejuvenation procedures. Specifically, blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery can have increased risk in patients who have high blood pressure. Pressure behind the eyes after surgery can cause serious complications. For some patients, this is the first time that they have addressed their high blood pressure and now they are able to have it treated through their primary care physician. Once their blood pressure is under control in most cases Dr. Stuart Kincaid can perform the surgery. As an ASPS board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Stuart Kincaid follows the recommended medical guidelines prior to surgery to help ensure patients safety.   Become a Fan on Facebook   Follow us on Twitter More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic Surgery Blog: A Facelift is a Better Investment Than Ever Before

Monday, May 21st, 2012

smiling older woman1 300x285 Plastic Surgery Blog: A Facelift is a Better Investment Than Ever BeforeAs women and men enter the ever-growing population of baby boomers, fitness and healthy lifestyle have become a central part of being used to be known as a senior citizen. According to a recent   onlinearticle The oldest of the US 76 million baby boomers begin turning 70 in 2016. And if there’s a strong unique trait of boomers, it is the intense motivation to stay and appear comparatively young. The shifting demographics aren’t entirely a good thing. In many instances, science has simply prolonged the lives of people barely alive with chronic diseases. There are no comprehensively effective treatments for dementia, which becomes more likely as a person ages. One of the greatest problems may be cultural. Many people in their 70s reported that they feel marginalized by younger people, even when they’re in robust health. Dr. StuartKincaid encourages his older patientsto maintain a positive attitude along with their best appearance. There is no medical reason for patients who are older to forgo the option of cosmetic surgery. Many older adults choose to have facial rejuvenation procedures including facelift, browlift, and  eyelift. In order to be a good candidate for these procedures Dr. Stuart Kincaid will require them to be in excellent health prior to surgery. Dr. Stuart Kincaid may require the patient to have independent medical clearance prior to surgery. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is committed to excellent results as well as a healthy plasticsurgeryprocess. Dr. Stuart Kincaid helps patients understand that plastic surgery for older adults is an excellent option not only for self-esteem but also increased self-confidence.                                                Become a Fan on Facebook    Follow us on Twitter     More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic Surgery Blog: Coffee Gets the Nod for Longevity

Thursday, May 17th, 2012

starbucks coffee1 Plastic Surgery Blog: Coffee Gets the Nod for LongevityThere have been conflicting reports about the health benefits of coffee for quite some time. A new study now says that coffee may actually add years to your life. According to a recent localnewsstory coffee appears to be good for you. At least the study didn’t say it was bad, according to researchers who led the biggest study ever performed focusing on coffee and health. They discovered that coffee drinkers appeared slightly more likely to live longer than those people who drink no coffee at all. Regular or decaf did not make a difference. This is significant because a few studies in the past came to the conclusion that coffee could be harmful. Results of the most recent study are published in Thursday’s New England Journal of Medicine. Older studies were not giving the wrong information. Coffee can increase cholesterol and blood pressure in the short term, which in turn can increase the risk of heart disease. But very few studies have looked at coffee and the risk of dying from any cause, not to mention specific diseases. This study has its imperfections as most diet studies do, the results are just based on observing people’s habits and resulting health. So it does not specifically demonstrate that coffee lengthens lives. But experts say it’s the best evidence we have thus far yet on this issue. The study involved more than 400,000 people and was done by the National Institutes of Health and AARP. Researchers also made allowances for smoking, drinking alcohol, exercise and other things that could skew results. Dr. StuartKincaid encourages older people to embrace the fact that many of them are living longer and feeling better than ever before. Provided patientsare healthy they should not hesitate to consider plasticsurgery procedures in order to look as young and energetic as they feel. Many of Dr. Stuart Kincaid older patients choose to have facelift, browlift, and blepharoplastywhich allows them to have a complete facial rejuvenation. Patients tell Dr. Stuart Kincaid that they are thrilled with the results and that the majority of patients look at least 7 to 10 years younger than their real age.   Become a Fan on Facebook

Plastic Surgery Blog: Don’t Let Depression Stop You from Enjoying Your Later Years

Friday, April 27th, 2012

older woman braces1 Plastic Surgery Blog: Don’t Let Depression Stop You from Enjoying Your Later Years Life is supposed to begin after 50 according to many experts who are referring to a good quality of life. Some people get sidetracked by depression. According to recent local San Diego article depression is not a normal symptom of aging. There are a multitude of available treatment options. Some are easily available and include exercise, socializing with friends, changes in your diet and participating in more ofthe things you enjoy. Other forms of depression can be treated with medication or therapy. Staying  active and involved with family and friends, exercising to stay trim and fit, and getting involved in a cause  or in your community can all contribute to preventing  depression. But don’t be afraid to ask for help if these activities are not working. Your golden years are too important not to be full and satisfying. Janice Yuwiler and Kellie Scott are with the San Diego State University School of Social Work’s Academy for Professional Excellence and contributed to the article. Dr. Stuart Kincaid encourages his to embrace the aging process without fear. Dr. Stuart Kincaid explains that there are so many options available to help patients look their best at every age. Even patients who do not choose plastic surgery can take advantage of medical grade skin care treatments that will help to keep their skin looking its best. Dr. Stuart Kincaid also recommends that patients consider noninvasive injectables including Botox and fillers like Juvederm and Restylane. Patients who are more comfortable with surgical procedures can usually benefit from facelift, brow lift, and blepharoplasty. Age is no longer a reason for patients to overlook cosmetic surgeryprocedures. Plastic Surgery Blog: Avoiding Sun Exposure Still #1 for Wrinkle Prevention

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

wrinkled neck2 Plastic Surgery Blog: Avoiding Sun Exposure Still #1 for Wrinkle PreventionWrinkles on a person’s face automatically equate to the image of an older person. According to recent San Diego local article avoiding sun exposure remains the most effective way to help prevent wrinkles and premature aging. According to the article when we view  a young girl’s skin it is markedly different from that of a middle-aged to older adult woman mostly due to long-term sun exposure and the natural aging process. Cumulative sun exposure over our lifetime adds up on our skin and can result in changes which include over tanned and leathery looking skin, with multiple lines, roughness, dryness, sagging, and precancerous skin lesions and skin cancers. Also, chronologically as we age the skin will become drier, rougher and ultimately wrinkled. There are tips for reducing the damage created by the sun and slowing down what is inevitable with chronological aging. According to the article some of these tips include minimizing sun exposure. Using a broad spectrum sunscreen daily that is at least an SPF 30 and have the ingredients avobenzone and/or mexoryl is imperative. Moisturizing the skin is a necessity especially for dry skin. This is for women of all ages. As women age using products that exfoliate the skin can damage the skin if appropriate moisturizer is not replaced. Using medical grade skin care products that include topical retinoids like Retin-A can reduce sun damage and help to build collagen. As patients age they should change their skin care regimen to match the characteristics of their aging skin for the best results. Dr. Stuart Kincaid offers effective solutions for sun damaged skin. Currently Dr. Stuart Kincaid has some of the most advanced lasers available. Patients treated with laser treatments including Sciton and IPL treatments often see amazing results in just one treatment. It is important for patients to maintain consistent skin care with medical grade products in order to enjoy the results long-term. Dr. Stuart Kincaid also recommends that patients consider noninvasive products like Botox and injectable fillers to improve the overall appearance of their face. Patients should also consider surgical options like blepharoplasty(eyelid lift) as an excellent option for a more youthful appearance.                                                Become a Fan on Facebook   Follow us on Twitter                 More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic Surgery Blog: Spring has sprung and so has allergy season

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

person sneezing5 Plastic Surgery Blog: Spring has sprung and so has allergy seasonUnfortunately people who suffer from allergies are keenly aware a new season has kicked off. According to a recent CNNlocalarticle Southern California as well as other states around the country are welcoming in the 2012 allergy season. According to the article over 60 million Americans suffer from allergic rhinitus, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. This basically means that when they inhale anything they are allergic to, they suffer symptoms in the nose and eyes. If the trigger of the reaction is pollen (or some other plant substance), the person is said to have “hay fever.” Classic symptoms include itchy eyes, runny nose and clogged sinuses, doctors and experts agree that allergies can even affect your mood. The connection isn’t universally agreed upon – perhaps nasal congestion and the medication-induced drowsiness that comes with many allergy medications could lead people to feel down. But, there is one study that suggest the allergic reaction itself may create a down mood. Allergy season has begun earlier this year, experts say. Dr. StuartKincaid shares with his patients that after many years of suffering allergies it is not uncommon to have drooping eyelids and pronounced bags beneath the eyes which some attribute to the rubbing of itchy eyes during much of the allergy season. Allergy season also brings forth patients who are concerned about their sinuses and wonder if in fact their difficulty breathing through their nose could be more than allergies. For patients were concerned with drooping eyelids and bags beneath the eyes Dr. Stuart Kincaid typically recommends a blepharoplasty for both the upper and lower eye area. This will remove the loose and lax skin from the eyelid as well as remove and tighten the bags beneath the eyes. Patients immediately see the benefit as their eyes become much more noticeable and youthful looking. For patients who are concerned about their nose and possible breathing issues, Dr. Stuart Kincaid may recommend a rhinoplasty combined with a septoplasty. As an experienced ASPSboard-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Stuart Kincaid is uniquely qualified to treat  not only conditions that may affect the breathing through the nose, but also the appearance and shape of the nose. Of course, if a patient is suffering from severe sinus problems Dr. Stuart Kincaid may refer the patient to a specialist. Allergy sufferers who are considering plasticsurgeryshould share their concerns with Dr. Stuart Kincaid prior to surgery so that their symptoms can be managed and the patient can have the best cosmetic surgery experience.     Become a Fan on Facebook     Follow us on Twitter      More on Dr.Kincaid                                                             ___________________________________
