Plastic Surgery Blog: The Psychology of Technology; Does it Affect Plastic Surgery?

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

images Woman using the internet4 Plastic Surgery Blog: The Psychology of Technology; Does it Affect Plastic Surgery?Technology has changed so much of the way live our lives on a daily basis. According to a recent localnewsarticle a San Diego area native known for his studies of psychology and technology recently began teaching adults how to effectively manage technology in their lives. According to the article for nearly 30 years, Larry Rosen has studied the impact of technology on the general population. The Solana Beach professor’s new book, “iDisorder,” covers our excessive obsession with smart phones, computers and social media  and how it threatens to consume us. It details how the perceived need to be connected the majority of time leaves many people on the very edge of serious psychiatric problems: narcissism, obsessive-compulsive disorder, voyeurism, attention-deficit disorder, and depression. While this might seem drastic and overstated it has become a concern of many psychologist and sociologist as well. Plastic surgery as an industry has also been infiltrated like every other industry with social media and the Internet. Dr. StuartKincaid has made a proactive effort by connecting with his patients both through the Internet as well as social media. Dr. Stuart Kincaid explains to his patients that nothing replaces the in person consultation that he provides for each and every patient. In this face-to-face meeting Dr. Stuart Kincaid is able to explain in detail the benefits and limitations of the recommended procedures. This includes both noninvasive procedures like Botox, injectable fillers, and skin care as well as surgical procedures including breastaugmentation, abdominoplasty, and facelift. While technology is an excellent tool for plastic surgery it helps patientsto perform many functions including contact the office easily, view before-and-after photos, and comment on new information and ideas posted on the blogs and website, Dr. Stuart Kincaid uses technology as a tool only. It was never meant to replace the valuable patient/ physician relationship.   Become a Fan on Facebook        Follow us on Twitter       More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic Surgery Blog: Does a Narcissist Always Win?

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

jealous women2 Plastic Surgery Blog: Does a Narcissist Always Win? Does it seem like that obnoxious coworker always seems to get the promotion? Have you mumbled under your breath about their narcissistic ways? A recent localnewsstory found that when it comes to landing new job narcissists seem to win most of the time. According to the article being your own best fan may give you the competitive edge in your next job interview, a new study suggests. The study says it is because narcissists, who tend to be obnoxiously and overly complimentary of their attributes are better able to talk about and promote themselves, which exudes confidence and expert skill to interviewers, University of Nebraska-Lincoln researchers explained. “This is one setting where it’s OK to say nice things about yourself and there are no ramifications. In fact, it’s expected,” study co-author Peter Harms, an assistant professor of management, said in a university news release. “Simply put, those who are comfortable doing this tend to do much better than those who aren’t.”  While this may be admirable in a job interview, it can backfire for patients who are considering plasticsurgery. Dr. Stuart Kincaid explains to his patients that a large part of satisfaction with plastic surgery procedures is based on patients having realistic expectations concerning their outcome. For example, patients who are considering breastaugmentation need to be realistic about what they can expect based on what they realistically bring to the table. It would not serve the patient well to be so overly impressed with their body that they believe their outcome should be something that is unachievable. This holds true for facelift patients as well. It can be a mistake for patients to search for a plastic surgeon who will promise them they will look like they did 20 years ago. Dr. StuartKincaid explains to patients that while looking as good as you feel is the goal, every plastic surgery procedure is limited by the patient and the type of candidate they are for the procedure. The overwhelming majority of patientswho have plastic surgery are thrilled with the results and Dr. Stuart Kincaid takes the extra steps to be sure that their expectations are exceeded.Become a Fan on Facebook         Follow us on Twitter    More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic Surgery Blog: Facial Transplants highlight the skills of trained plastic surgeons

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

doctor photo11 Plastic Surgery Blog: Facial Transplants highlight the skills of trained plastic surgeonsFacial transplants used to be something you only heard about in science fiction movies. Advancements in medicine have made them a reality. According to a recent localnewsstory another facial transplant has been performed on a gentleman from Virginia. According to the story  a 37-year-old man received an extensive face transplant spanning from his hairline down to the neck, including a jaw, full set of teeth, tongue and cheeks. The reconstructive plastic surgery basically re-created the majority of the patient’s face not including his eyes and the back portion of his throat. Richard Lee Norris of Hillsville, Va., is the 23rd patient to receive a face transplant across the globe. His doctors at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center say this reconstructive surgery is the most complex surgery of its type due to the extent of the transplant and fact that there was placement of a complete set of teeth. “The face will look like a blend of the donor as well as Richard,” said Dr.Eduardo D. Rodriguez, associate professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. “There are some unique features, his nose, the chin that have been replaced in entirety. Other than that, it’s a combination of both individuals.” Dr. StuartKincaid stresses to his patients that the advantages of his training as anASPSboard-certified plastic surgeon include extensive training in reconstructive plastic surgery. Patient should understand that many of the techniques used in cosmetic surgeries including facelift, browlift, and blepharoplasty came from reconstructiveplasticsurgeryprocedures performed on the face.  The knowledge and skill required to treat a reconstructive patient is extensive and in turn serves the cosmetic patient very well. Dr. Stuart Kincaid with his training and skill level is able to assess not only the opportunity for cosmetic solutions; he is also able to use creative measures when applicable to help patients reach their desired goals. The importance of choosing an ASPS board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Stuart Kincaid is invaluable.     Become a Fan on Facebook     Follow us on Twitter  More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic Surgery Blog: Detecting a heart attack may become easier

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

heart diesease2 Plastic Surgery Blog: Detecting a heart attack may become easierAccording to a recent online article heart attacks may soon be detected easier with a simple blood test. Each year, the American Heart Association estimates 1.5 million Americans have heart attacks; 785,000 are suffering their first heart attack, usually with no indication it was going to happen. “Slow tightening of the blood vessels over time can lead to chest pain, called angina, but these older plaques are less likely to rupture,” Dr. Eric Topol, director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute in La Jolla, California says. A group of researchers now believe that they’ve found a way to assess which patients are a few days or weeks away from a heart attack. In the results published Wednesday, Topol and his colleagues discovered inconsistencies in the cells lining the surface of blood vessels, called endothelial cells, when the risk of a plaque rupture was high. When a heart attack was about to happen, more of the endothelial cells were circulating and they were misshapen. Topol says they anticipate having a simple blood test available next year to identify patients in eminent danger of plaque dislodging and creating a heart attack. Doctors would know in minutes if patients were about to have a heart attack. Heart disease is the number one killer of women. Women are who are considering plasticsurgery, especially those over the age of 40 should welcome the diligence of a plastic surgeon who insist on a clean bill of health prior to surgery. Dr. StuartKincaid as an ASPS board-certified plastic surgeon is committed to following the standards of his society which were created to ensure patient safety and cosmetic plastic surgery. Since any M.D. can perform cosmetic plastic surgery procedures, it can be tempting for patients to consider non-board-certified plastic surgeons that may not require medical testing prior to surgery. This has become an issue most commonly for patients who are considering facialrejuvenationprocedures, including facelift, blepharoplasty, and browlift. In many cases patients are led to believe that as long as they are not having anesthesia they do not need to be cleared medically. This can be dangerous because oral sedation is used during these procedures and patients who may have underlying heart conditions can encounter complications during and after the procedure. Dr. Stuart Kincaid stresses to his patients that health and safety must be a top priority for both the patient and the doctor.    Become a Fan on Facebook    Follow us on Twitter    More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic Surgery Blog: Daily use aspirin gets a boost

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

Asprin Plastic Surgery Blog: Daily use aspirin gets a boostDaily use aspirin got a big boost today as different newsmediaoutlets announced the possibility of aspirin as a preventative solution for cancer. According to onearticle three studies were conducted by Dr. Peter M. Rothwell and his colleagues at the University of Oxford and John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, United Kingdom. In the study published in the Lancet, researchers discovered that the aspirin users had reduced cancer deaths (562 to 664 deaths) and fewer nonvascular deaths (1,021 to 1,173 deaths) — these are causes not associated to the heart or circulatory system. These conclusions were based on 34 studies.

In 51 trials, aspirin users had less nonvascular deaths and had reduced in-trial cancer deaths by nearly 40 percent after about five years. The conclusion was only associated with daily users of aspirin, not studies where participants took aspirin every other day. In six prevention trials, aspirin users had less cancer incidence from three years and beyond by 324 cases when compared to 421 cases in the groups who did not take aspirin. This is an interesting study and there is no doubt that the manufacturers of aspirin are thrilled that another use could surface supporting the daily consumption of aspirin. Dr. StuartKincaid emphasizes to patients who are considering plasticsurgery or injectableprocedures that aspirin is not advised three-week or less prior to the procedure. Surgical facial procedures like facelift, rhinoplasty, or blepharoplasty could have a very difficult recovery due to the increased likelihood of bruising and swelling. This advice also applies to patients having Botox, or filler (including Sculptra ) injectables. Aspirin in most cases should not be taken on a daily basis unless advised by a patient’s physician. Dr. Stuart Kincaid strives to assure that patientsare informed about all risk for complications that are associated with cosmetic plastic surgery.        Become a Fan on Facebook    More on Dr.Kincaid__________________________________

Plastic Surgery Blog: Spring has sprung and so has allergy season

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

person sneezing5 Plastic Surgery Blog: Spring has sprung and so has allergy seasonUnfortunately people who suffer from allergies are keenly aware a new season has kicked off. According to a recent CNNlocalarticle Southern California as well as other states around the country are welcoming in the 2012 allergy season. According to the article over 60 million Americans suffer from allergic rhinitus, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. This basically means that when they inhale anything they are allergic to, they suffer symptoms in the nose and eyes. If the trigger of the reaction is pollen (or some other plant substance), the person is said to have “hay fever.” Classic symptoms include itchy eyes, runny nose and clogged sinuses, doctors and experts agree that allergies can even affect your mood. The connection isn’t universally agreed upon – perhaps nasal congestion and the medication-induced drowsiness that comes with many allergy medications could lead people to feel down. But, there is one study that suggest the allergic reaction itself may create a down mood. Allergy season has begun earlier this year, experts say. Dr. StuartKincaid shares with his patients that after many years of suffering allergies it is not uncommon to have drooping eyelids and pronounced bags beneath the eyes which some attribute to the rubbing of itchy eyes during much of the allergy season. Allergy season also brings forth patients who are concerned about their sinuses and wonder if in fact their difficulty breathing through their nose could be more than allergies. For patients were concerned with drooping eyelids and bags beneath the eyes Dr. Stuart Kincaid typically recommends a blepharoplasty for both the upper and lower eye area. This will remove the loose and lax skin from the eyelid as well as remove and tighten the bags beneath the eyes. Patients immediately see the benefit as their eyes become much more noticeable and youthful looking. For patients who are concerned about their nose and possible breathing issues, Dr. Stuart Kincaid may recommend a rhinoplasty combined with a septoplasty. As an experienced ASPSboard-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Stuart Kincaid is uniquely qualified to treat  not only conditions that may affect the breathing through the nose, but also the appearance and shape of the nose. Of course, if a patient is suffering from severe sinus problems Dr. Stuart Kincaid may refer the patient to a specialist. Allergy sufferers who are considering plasticsurgeryshould share their concerns with Dr. Stuart Kincaid prior to surgery so that their symptoms can be managed and the patient can have the best cosmetic surgery experience.     Become a Fan on Facebook     Follow us on Twitter      More on Dr.Kincaid                                                             ___________________________________

Plastic surgery blog:Should over people over 50 embrace cosmetic surgery?

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

beautiful middle aged woman7 Plastic surgery blog:Should over people over 50 embrace cosmetic surgery?According to a recent Huffington Post article baby boomers are a transformative generation, and they are tackling midlife with the same take charge and no holds barred spirit that has exemplified their lifestyles over the last 50 years. They simply won’t accept aging without a fight. But along with the youthful mind set toward work and health comes the dark side – the unforgiving pressure to look as young as one feels inside, which has propelled the boom in cosmetic surgery. Americans spent $10 billion on procedures in 2011. There are some who swear off the trend. Actress Cate Blanchett, 42, recently told Fashionista.com: “There’s been a decade or so of people doing intervention with their face and their body. Now that we’re emerging from that people are seeing that long term it’s not so great. … In the end if you have all that stuff done. In the end you just see the work. It doesn’t fill me with admiration, it fills me with pity.”  On the other end of the celebrity examples, there’s Joan Rivers, who has reportedly had more than 700 cosmetic procedures. But as she told Huff/Post50: “I don’t give a damn what people think. If you don’t like my opinion, too bad. That’s the only good thing about age.” Dr. Stuart Kincaid understands the difference in opinions between those who are for cosmetic plastic surgery and those who are against it. For every person it is an individual and personal decision. It is easy to state an opinion these days thanks to the Internet. People must remember, they are only opinions and everyone has one. The decision to have plastic surgery must be rooted in a person’s own desires. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is committed to a lengthy initial consultation in which she discusses with his patients the motivation behind their consideration of cosmetic plastic surgery. Patients over 50 typically have more questions and seek solutions and examples rather than a sales pitch. Most patients over 50 consult with Dr. Stuart Kincaid concerning facelift, brow lift, blepharoplasty, or injectable fillers including Sculptra. Dr. Stuart Kincaid has the experience and expertise to help patients make the best decisions according to their lifestyle and individual desires.    Become a Fan on Facebook   Follow us on Twitter    More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic surgery blog:The Study of Beauty

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

shapely woman Plastic surgery blog:The Study of Beauty

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there is science behind the beauty. According to a recent CNN local news story it’ s not well understood why people reconcile to particular objects of beauty because of many exposures, but not others. For example, you might be disinterested in a pop song after a few listens, but listen to an opera dozens of times over a frequency of years and still experience emotional feelings about it. Or maybe there’s a painting that you’ve continually adored ,but another painting loses its brilliance after a few viewings. That is logical since we see every characteristic and flaw in ourselves; albeit there are lots of people we consider gorgeous to whom we don’t get close enough to analyze all the deficient flaws. Perception of beauty may diminish when we do start to accept those defects. A recent study in Neuroimaging established that self-judgment of one’s own facial attractiveness may be parallel to self-esteem based on customary patterns of brain activity. When it comes to facial attractiveness there are reasons to assume that characteristic features, and biologically based factors influence our classification of beauty. Faces that are more symmetrical and familiar looking tend to be evaluated as more aesthetically appealing in scientific studies.  Dr. Stuart Kincaid encourages his patients to believe that their beauty is increased when they acknowledge their own beauty. Facial rejuvenation is excellent tools for helping patients maintain their most youthful appearance. Facial rejuvenation procedures can include both nonsurgical as well as surgical procedures. This includes injectables such as Botox and fillers as well as surgical procedures including faceliftbrow lift, and blepharoplasty. Regardless of the facial rejuvenation procedures that are chosen patients should understand that the quest for achieving one’s best and most youthful appearance is never based on one procedure alone. Dr. Stuart Kincaid has developed long-term relationships with many of his patients who continue to choose his services to help them embrace their most youthful appearance.   Like Us on Facebook   Follow us on Twitter  More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic surgery blog:Boomers need to pay attention to injuries

older man and woman couple5 Plastic surgery blog:Boomers need to pay attention to injuries

As we age the likelihood of injury increases substantially. According to a recent CBS 8 new story costly knee replacements have more than tripled in people aged 45-64 in recent years and a study released last week found that nearly 1 in 20 Americans older than 50 have these artificial joints. But active boomers can avoid that kind of drastic treatment by properly managing aches and pains. According to the article Charles Bush-Joseph, a sports medicine specialist at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center said  a good rule of thumb for lower-body injuries is this: “If you’re able to bear weight, it’s safe to self-treat,” at least initially. Even if taking a few steps is painful, just being able to put weight on an injury means it’s probably not a medical emergency.”Older patients who are active are more likely to enjoy the benefits of looking good and feeling energetic and youthful. Many of these patients consult with Dr. Stuart Kincaid because they are beginning to see the signs of aging on their faces. Dr. Stuart Kincaid explained that facial rejuvenation using both surgical and nonsurgical techniques can help the patient to look as much as 15 years younger. Noninvasive procedures could include Botox, injectable fillers, and the effective new treatment Sculptra. Sculptra is filler that works gradually over time to restore fullness to the face by using the patient’s own collagen. As a featured member of the Liquid Facelift Association Dr. Stuart Kincaid is pleased to offer this breakthrough procedure. Patients are often also offered facelift, blepharoplasty, and brow lift as a secondary recommendation.More and more boomers are considering facial rejuvenation with Dr. Stuart Kincaid as an excellent value for patients who have chosen to maintain their most youthful appearance.

Plastic surgery blog:Solitude does not have to be loneliness

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

woman doing yoga2 Plastic surgery blog:Solitude does not have to be loneliness

It is often frowned upon when a woman spends too much time alone. If she is single it could be misconstrued as loneliness and she could be perceived as an” old maid”. These are very negative stereotypes and far from the truth. According to a recent Psychology Today article there are very good reasons for women to carve out quiet time in their lives. According to the article among other reasons solitude gives a person the opportunity to reboot their brain and re-energize their body. It also helps people to concentrate and focus once their body and mind is completely rested. Solitude also gives some people the opportunity to find their own voice especially if they spend the majority of their time in group activities. These are only some of the excellent points made in the article, but reiterating the importance of feeling good goes hand-in-hand with what Dr. Stuart Kincaid believes about looking good. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is committed to helping his patients understand the balance between their appearance and the way they feel  as the most effective way to live life enjoyably. Patients who consult with Dr. Stuart Kincaid sometimes are initially nervous and are pleasantly pleased to learn that he embraces not only their concerns and desires but also their feelings and thoughts. This helps Dr. Stuart Kincaid to make better overall plastic surgery recommendations, because understanding the patient is the key to providing patients with well managed expectations. Patients who are considering procedures that are noninvasive such as Sculptra,  and Restylane, as well as those who are considering larger procedures such as facelift, or abdominoplasty are all treated with the utmost respect and consideration for their feelings. Dr. Stuart Kincaid certainly understands the value of a patient who has a well-rounded existence and therefore is likely to have an exceptional plastic surgery experience.
