Breast Reduction: Who Should Consider the Procedure?

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

Overweight African American Woman3 Breast Reduction: Who Should Consider the Procedure? For the general public it can be hard to believe that anyone would consider reducing their breast. But, for the countless number of women who suffer from the medical symptoms associated with excessively large breast the concept comes as a relief. Breast reduction is a surgical procedure that can be considered medically reconstructive or cosmetic depending on the patient, and how the excessive breast tissue is affecting their quality of life. Dr. Stuart Kincaid explains to patients that a breast reduction could be considered for many different reasons. Primarily most patients who are considering breast reduction have what they consider very large breast that could be causing a number of problems in their daily lives. Most patients are suffering from one or a combination of the following symptoms: back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, groves in the shoulders, and painful, uncomfortable rashes underneath the breast tissue at the breast crease. The breast tissue can be extremely heavy and some experts equate it to carrying two 5 pounds sacks of potatoes, connected by a strap around the neck, to help others understand how cumbersome it can be. In order to reduce the breast Dr. Stuart Kincaid makes an incision around the nipple areola complex where the dark shading and lighter skin tone meet and then and incision that runs down to the crease. Depending on the amount of breast tissue that needs to be removed and other factors, an incision is made in the crease that can range in length. Breast reduction results can vary greatly as they are heavily dependent upon the amount of breast tissue each patient has and many other factors. Dr. Stuart Kincaid helps patients understand what they can expect based on their specific situation. The cosmetic aspect of breast reduction allows Dr. Stuart Kincaid to take into consideration the best aesthetic proportion for the patient. It is aesthetically important for patients to be able to match the bottom portion of their body with the size of their breast after surgery. This can have a compelling effect on choices for their wardrobe as well as their overall appearance. Dr. Stuart Kincaid discusses each patient’s options in detail and helps them to understand the benefits and limitations of breast reduction so that they can make an informed decision. Breast reduction surgery had among the highest patient satisfaction rates nationwide, and Dr. Stuart Kincaid’s practice is no exception. Dr. Stuart Kincaid encourages patients who are considering breast reduction to schedule a consultation to determine if breast reduction is a viable option for them.

Plastic Surgery Blog: If You Want Large Breast Implants Your Plastic Surgeon Needs to Be an Expert

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

large breast implants Plastic Surgery Blog: If You Want Large Breast Implants Your Plastic Surgeon Needs to Be an ExpertPutting all opinions aside, there is a small segment of the population that likes the look of what would be considered extremely large breast implants. This is not to be confused with women who have naturally large breast with their own breast tissue. These women often have medical concerns including neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain, and groups in the shoulders from bra straps that are too tight. These women often need a breast reduction. Women who desire extra-large implants have many different reasons for their decision. Some are in the adult entertainment industry and have chosen larger implants for that reason. Others, have always liked the look at it is a personal preference. Whatever the reason, women need to be aware of complications that can arise solely as a result of the size of the implant. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is an expert in breast augmentation using extra-large implants. Although only a small segment of the population request these implants he is keenly aware of the complications the can arise and is able to help patients make the necessary efforts to avoid them. While no plastic surgeon can assure that there will not be complications the more training and expertise a plastic surgeon has the more likely he is to have less complications. Extra-large implants can increase the risk of what is known as capsular contracture. This is excessive hardening around the implant and can cause an unnatural feel, and in some patients, pain. Also, as an expert Dr. Stuart Kincaid is able to assure that the chest wall as the appropriate sizing and that the pocket created for the breast implant is appropriate and can accommodate the larger implant. Breast augmentation has its own risk of complications just like any other surgery. However, when extra-large implants are used it is a specialized surgery in patients will benefit greatly from the expertise of Dr. Stuart Kincaid.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Take Advantage of School Vacation and Consider Plastic Surgery for Students

Monday, June 11th, 2012

Mother and Daughter look a like Plastic Surgery Blog: Take Advantage of School Vacation and Consider Plastic Surgery for StudentsMost people think of plastic surgery as cosmetic procedures for the vain and age conscious population. It is important for people to realize that plastic surgery is a medical specialty that provides significant life-changing results for multitude of situations. ASPS board-certified plastic surgeons like Dr. Stuart Kincaid are in an elite group of only 1900 plastic surgeons in the United States. These surgeons have an extraordinary amount of training and expertise that is specifically recognized by the American Medical Association. Plastic surgeons are included in some of the most influential and amazing surgeries performed throughout the world. These include facial transplants, as well as separation of conjoined twins, complex hand surgeries, and so many more. So, when it comes to plastic surgery for students, there are procedures that are life-changing for young people their parents should consider, especially over the summer months when they are not in school. Otoplasty which is also known as ear pinning is an excellent procedure for young children who have ears that are protruding and caused them embarrassment or shame. Dr. Stuart Kincaid explains that the procedure is rather straightforward however it should be performed by an ASPS board-certified plastic surgeon with the experience and expertise to help ensure not only optimal results but also safety. Gynecomastia or excessive male breast tissue could be present in older adolescent boys and can also cause shame and embarrassment. Dr. Stuart Kincaid explains that by removing the breast tissue as well as the underlying fat he is able to help achieve a flatter more aesthetically pleasing and toned looking chest. For the older adolescent girls who have excessive breast tissue breast reduction may be a consideration. For many girls they are unable to participate in sports and gym activities and in some cases have excess weight as a result. In some cases breast reduction may be covered under insurance but if not, parents should know that the difference it can make in a young woman’s life is priceless. Dr. Stuart Kincaid invites parents and their children to schedule a complimentary consultation to determine if plastic surgery is a viable option. Scheduling and having the surgery over the summer months is an excellent opportunity for patients to heal and be ready for school in the fall.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Shoulder Pain That Limits Activity

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

shoulder pain1 Plastic Surgery Blog: Shoulder Pain That Limits ActivityExperiencing pain in our bodies not only limits our activity but has a negative effect on our quality of life. Shoulder pain is no exception. According to a recent local article most joints in the body function as complex hinges, however the shoulder is able to harbor a great deal of freedom in motion. With this freedom there is an inherent risk of instability. A dislocation happens when the bone comes out of the joint (or, a joint completely comes apart). Yet, not every instability event has to be traumatic dislocations. Some instability events are actually a very small occurrence. But, even the most mundane occurrences can become a problem if they occur on a recurrent basis. Most children are born with an unbelievable amount of flexibility and joint laxity or looseness. It is important to know the difference between flexibility and laxity. Flexibility includes muscle tightness in contrast to laxity which relates to the looseness of ligaments around a joint. Having reduced flexibility combined with joint laxity is actually one of the highest risk factors for joint injuries during sports. Flexibility and laxity in the joints should not be painful. Having shoulder pain that limits activities of daily living is not normal. Dr. Stuart Kincaid explains to patients that it is very common to have shoulder pain along with neck and back pain for patients who have excessively large breast. The weight of the breast can become extremely limiting over time and most patients tend to gain weight due to lack of activity. Typically, Dr. Stuart Kincaid will recommend a breast reduction combined with liposuction of the lateral chest wall to reduce the breast tissue and create better proportion for the patient. While insurance companies over the years have made the process of having breast reduction covered under most insurance plans virtually impossible, breast reduction continues to be one of the most beneficial plastic surgery procedures that can be performed for a woman. Dr. Stuart Kincaid urges his patients to consult with him and determine if a breast reduction is a good recommendation for eliminating shoulder pain and other conditions that can be associated with excessively large breast.                                                Become a Fan on Facebook         Follow us on Twitter    More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic Surgery Blog: Teens are Likely to Have Problems for Obesity into Adulthood

Thursday, May 24th, 2012

obese teenage girl Plastic Surgery Blog: Teens are Likely to Have Problems for Obesity into AdulthoodObesity is not only a problem for American adults but also a problem for US teens. According to recentarticle about 22 percent of today’s teens have borderline-high or already high LDL cholesterol — this is the cholesterol that is known as the bad type. And 15 percent have pre-diabetes or diabetes, based on the new research derived from data spanning from 1999 to 2008. When the study authors reviewed the year-by-year differences, one risk factor was evident. At the onset of the study period, the rate of pre-diabetes/diabetes was 9 percent. By the conclusion of the study, that number was 23 percent. Pre-diabetes and diabetes was elevated over time among adolescents, reported the study’s lead author, Ashleigh May, an epidemiologist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. May added that the rates of pre-diabetes/diabetes as well as the other cardiovascular risk factors were elevated as weight increased. The study was posted online May 21, and will be published in the June print issue of Pediatrics. A number of teens who struggle with obesity are also affected by excessive breast tissue which can cause concerns and problems that contribute to obesity. Dr. StuartKincaid consults with parents of female teenagers, who have excessive breast tissue that causes them pain in their neck, shoulders, and back. In many cases this prevents the teen from being able to exercise effectively and maintain a stable healthy weight. Typically Dr. Stuart Kincaid will recommend a breastreduction. This procedure allows him to remove the excess breast tissue and in some cases perform liposuctionon the lateral chest wall for more aesthetically pleasing as well as functional result. In male patientsbreast reduction surgery is called gynecomastia. This can affect both overweight males as well as normal weight males. Dr. Stuart Kincaid performs gynecomastia surgery excising the breast tissue and creating a much more aesthetically pleasing and proportionate looking chest.    Become a Fan on Facebook      Follow us on Twitter        More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic Surgery Blog: Smoking May Increase the Chances of Hot Flashes

Friday, May 4th, 2012

woman holding cigarette8 Plastic Surgery Blog: Smoking May Increase the Chances of Hot Flashes Menopause can cause debilitating symptoms for some women. These could include frequent hot flashes. According to a new study in an article published online, smoking can increase the chances of having hot flashes occur. According to the article women smokers with specific gene variants are at an elevated risk for menopausal hot flashes compared to smokers without these genetic differences, the new study says. A detailed look at the data from nearly 300 late reproductive-age women who were part of the study for 11 years concluded that smokers with certain variations (single nucleotide polymorphisms) in genes that play a part in the patient’s metabolism are at greater risk for having hot flashes than smokers without these gene variants. The study appears in the June issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. The report shows the impact of smoking on hot flashes as a part of variants in genes combined with sex steroid metabolism in late reproductive-age women, and infers that certain smokers have increased risk for hot flashes based on their genetic makeup according to lead author Dr. Samantha Butts, of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, which were provided in the journal news release. The study provides yet another reason for women to discontinue smoking. This holds true especially for women beyond 40 years of age. Dr. StuartKincaid explains to patientswho are scheduled for surgery the smoking increases the risk substantially for surgical complications. The most common complications patients seen include delayed, and necrosis. The most common procedures where these complications are seen include breastlift, breastreduction, facelift, and abdominoplasty. These procedures require tightening the skin and can produce tension on the incision. Smokers have compromised tissues and therefore a greater risk of the incision being compromised. This can lead to delayed wound healing and in some cases necrosis.  Patients should not smoke at least four weeks prior to surgery and four weeks after surgery for the best chance of reducing complications due to smoking.    Become a Fan on Facebook       Follow us on Twitter       More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic Surgery Blog: Back Pain and Aging, Is it Inevitable?

Monday, April 16th, 2012

back pain1 Plastic Surgery Blog: Back Pain and Aging, Is it Inevitable? Many people experience back pain and attribute to an inevitable part of aging. According to recent onlinearticle the causes of back pain are what seem countless. Some of the most common causes include poor posture, being obese, smoking, diseases of the spine, and other health conditions, including cancer. Of course, the most popular cause of back pain is: aging. “Through the aging process, using our backs over a long period of time could be the source of back pain” says Robin Lustig, DC, a chiropractor at New Jersey Total Health Center in Lodi and Pompton is made up Plains, N.J. “It’s just normal wear and tear.” What’s the real cause of the ache? Your spine is made up ofv small individual bones called vertebrae, they are stacked one on top of the other. In between each of these vertebra are small they give the vertebrae the ability for your spine to move and disks with soft centers  act basically like shock absorbers preventing your bones from rubbing against each other. With aging the disks between the vertebrae become worn down and get smaller, which causes pain and stiffness as the bones begin to rub against each other. In addition, the space that surrounds our spinal cord narrows over time. This condition, is called spinal stenosis, and also puts pressure on the cord and spinal nerves, causing pain. Physical exertion in excess can aggravate the condition. Preventative measures like maintaining a healthy weight and staying active will help patients as they age. Dr. StuartKincaid points out to aging female patients that pain from excessively large breast is a medical fact that is often overlooked. In women, if they have excessively large breast as they age they can cause not only cause back pain, but prevent them from enjoying a quality life. Dr. Stuart Kincaid may recommend breast reduction as an option for these patients. The other symptoms they may be experiencing could include numbness in the fingers, neck pain, grooves in the shoulders from bra straps, and also uncomfortable skin rashes beneath the breast. Patients should consider breastreduction surgery as it is one of the best ways to improve mobility as well as the patient’s quality of life. Patients who have breast reduction may also combine the procedure with liposuction of the lateral chest to better contour excess fat that may be present under the arm area.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Advice for Healing Scars After Cosmetic Surgery

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

abdominal revision scar Plastic Surgery Blog: Advice for Healing Scars After Cosmetic SurgeryIt is rare that patients have a cosmetic surgery consultation, and do not ask about scarring. Much of the advice that is given to patients online concerning ways to reduce the chance of scarring is largely promotional. A recent onlinearticle gave some practical advice outside of selling their product. According to the article they advised against smoking. Smoking causes a vasoconstriction which will compromise tissue healing. Delayed healing is very common in smokers. The article advised against drinking alcohol (in moderation if necessary); the article claims that alcohol causes oxidation in the tissues. It is likened to rust on a car. The article recommends eating well, exercising and keeping stress at a minimum. It also recommends taking a good multivitamin preferably one with antioxidants. Many online sources sell surgical vitamins to be used prior to surgery.  For at least six weeks prior to surgery, patients should use a good medical grade skin care regimen to prep the skin; this should include products with Retin-A , hydroquinone, hydrocortisone, and alpha-hydroxy acids. Healthy skin has the best chance to heal better and this in turn should improve scars. Dr. StuartKincaid advises patients to take a proactive approach to taking care of incisions to help aid in the process of healing and scarring. Patients must understand that genetics also play a part in how a scar heals. Scars that have tension on the incisions have a greater likelihood of spreading and have more difficulty healing. These would include incisions from facelift, breastlift, abdominoplasty and other procedures that pull the skin tightly. The reality is that all scars heal with time. It is the overall attitude of most patients that a scar pales in comparison to the benefits most patients receive after having plasticsurgery.                                                Become a Fan on Facebook      Follow us on Twitter    More on Dr.Kincaid

New type of breast augmentation surgery dubbed ‘gummy bear breast implants’ in San Diego

Most of us are well aware of what a gummy bear is – those squishy candies that resemble the shape of a bear in a multitude of colors, tastes, and textures. But now, “gummy bear” may have a whole new connotation if the US Food and Drug Administration approves the latest in breast augmentation surgery called the gummy bear silicone gel breast implant.

The gummy bear implant is the popular name for a new kind of breast augmentation implant in the form of a cohesive gel as reported by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. The gummy bear implant is a form-stable gel silicone breast implant approved for use in Europe and Canada, however, they are not approved for use in the Unites States.

According to a recent poll, eight hundred women were surveyed on the types of breast implants they are most interested in. According to those results nearly half of the women surveyed – nearly 800 – said they would be willing to wait for the gummy bear breast implant to be approved in the United States before actually undergoing any kind of breast implant surgery.

Why the excitement over gummy bear implants?

“[These implants] are longer-lasting and maintain a more attractive and predictable shape,” said one plastic surgeon. “The gel they’re made of is less liquid-like and more solid-like than even today’s other cohesive silicone gel implants.”

A gummy bear implant can resist gravity better than other kinds of breast augmentation procedures according to clinical trials, and many women experience less scar tissue and fewer complications. Some cons include a higher price point and a larger incision compared to other kinds of breast surgery in San Diego.

For women looking to undergo plastic surgery in San Diego, and who want a natural and yet enhanced physical shape, consider setting up a consultation with Dr. Kincaid to see what type of breast surgery is best for your desired outcome and desired size.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Breast pain; What is a woman to do?

Friday, March 16th, 2012

mammogram5 Plastic Surgery Blog: Breast pain; What is a woman to do?According to a recent article in TheHuffingtonPost, when a woman is feeling breast pain; getting a mammogram may not be the best choice.  A new study shows that imaging tests specifically for breast pain might not have a monumental benefit. The study, published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, discovered that for women with a completely normal breast exam, having an MRI, mammogram or ultrasound did not appear to make a difference in any recommendation or decisions on the part of the doctor and the patient. “While some have suggested that doing further testing in women with breast pain will help to reassure the patient, we did not find this to be the case,” study researcher Mary Beth Howard, MS, an MD candidate at the Boston University School of Medicine, said in a statement.  Study authors noted that there are no specific parameters on how breast pain should be treated by a doctor, though it may make some women cope more easily if they have an imaging test performed. The study included 916 women who had breast pain and were referred to the Boston Medical Center between 2006 and 2009. The study physicians looked at how the women who received imaging tests were diagnosed and treated, and they compared them with women who didn’t receive imaging tests. In conclusion, six of the women had cancer. All of them had another accompanying sign of cancer – for example cancer in the other breast discovered by a screening mammogram, or a lump in the breast. Researchers also discovered  that for the women who had the imaging tests just for the breast pain, there were the added negative experiences, including  having to visit the doctor more times, having to endure  more mammograms, and being tested multiple times. Dr. StuartKincaid explains to patients who are having breast surgery including breastaugmentation with implants, breastreduction, and breastlift that proactive breast health is extremely important. After having breast surgery patient should be keenly aware that they will still be advised to follow the American Cancer Society’s recommendation for early breast cancer detection. This recommendation includes monthly breast self-exams as well as an annual mammogram at 40 years of age. Breast cancer patients have some of the highest  cancer survival rates. Dr. Stuart Kincaid performs both breastreconstructionas well as cosmetic breast surgery. As a result, he is committed to helping patients maintain their best breast health.Become a Fan on Facebook Follow us on Twitter    More on Dr.Kincaid
