Breast augmentation is the number one cosmetic surgical procedure performed in United States. In Southern California many would consider the procedure routine because of the prevalence of women who have undergone the surgery. There is an abundance of information available for women who are considering breast augmentation, and thanks to the Internet women who are considering breast augmentation can become confused and overwhelmed by the information rather quickly. Patients who schedule a consultation with Dr. Stuart Kincaid are informed of not only the benefits and limitations of breast augmentation, but also the types of breast implants available and which recommendation is best for them. It is virtually impossible to choose a breast implant as the best recommendation for a patient who has not been examined by a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is highly trained with different types of breast implants and explains to patients that the breast implants are “tools” designed to help him achieve the patient’s desired appearance. Using different types of implants, including silicone gel implants, saline implants, different profiles and shapes of implants, allow Dr. Stuart Kincaid to truly customize a breast augmentation that is most likely to meet or exceed the patient’s expectations. It is important for patients to realize that every patient has some sort of breast asymmetry. Some patients have a wider rib cage, others may have a breast fold that’s higher on one side than the other, or some may have a noticeable indentation on the chest wall. These are all situations that will not change based on having breast augmentation, so, Dr. Stuart Kincaid uses his surgical expertise and artistic talent to choose the right breast implant that will give the best aesthetic appearance, taking into consideration the aspects of the patient that will not change with the breast augmentation procedure. Dr. Stuart Kincaid offers breast implants from all three FDA approved breast implant manufacturers. Dr. Stuart Kincaid uses breast measurements combined with the patient’s expectations and desires to make the best recommendation for each patient concerning which breast implants will help them to achieve their desired appearance. In some cases, Dr. Stuart Kincaid may recommend a breast lift combined with breast augmentation for the best aesthetically pleasing result. Dr. Stuart Kincaid encourages patients to schedule a consultation to determine if breast augmentation is a desirable solution for them.

Breast Augmentation: Which Breast Implants Are Best?
Thursday, June 28th, 2012Plastic Surgery Blog: Is Plastic Surgery the Right Choice for You?
Tuesday, June 19th, 2012
Although plastic surgery is an individual decision is easy to get caught up in believing that plastic surgery can achieve certain goals that it cannot. Patients should approach the plastic surgery process with an open mind. Prior to a plastic surgery consultation patient should consider all outside research as information that is general, and understand that it can change once they have a true consultation with Dr. Stuart Kincaid. This includes information from the Internet, friends, family, television and other sources. Dr. Stuart Kincaid examines every patient who is considering plastic surgery and makes recommendations based on his medical knowledge, surgical expertise, and experience. Cosmetic plastic surgery is intended to enhance one’s appearance not replace or substitute. This means that patient should consider breast augmentation for example as an enhancement of what currently exist, and not a replacement. This means that while Dr. Stuart Kincaid can help to enhance the look of the breast through breast augmentation with implants and possibly a breast lift he is still limited by the patient’s own physical attributes. These could include but are not limited to the chest wall, the amount of skin, the amount of existing breast tissue and more. Patients should realize that an enhancement will create a more aesthetically pleasing look; however, the breast will still maintain the same basic characteristics including where they sit on the chest wall and the existing cleavage line. Meeting and exceeding the expectations of patients is critical in creating a satisfying patient experience. Dr. Stuart Kincaid and his staff are committed to providing the best patient experience possible.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Only 33% of Women Reach Their Breast-feeding Goals
Monday, June 4th, 2012
Most women are well aware of the fact that breast-feeding is best for their babies. According to a recent online article even though most American women plan on breast-feeding their newborns, less than one-third of those who expected to exclusively breast-feed for three months or more actually achieve the goal, according to new research. The most significant factor in determining if a woman met her breast-feeding goal seemed to be whether a baby received additional feedings while in the hospital. “We found that mothers able to exclusively breast-feed through their hospital stay were more able to meet their breast-feeding intentions,” said the study’s lead author, Cria Perrine, an epidemiologist in the division of nutrition, physical activity and obesity at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Conclusions of the study were posted online June 4 and are scheduled to be published in the July issue of Pediatrics. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that babies be breast-fed as a sole source of nutrition for the first six months of their lives. Earlier research found that only 35 percent of American infants are breast-fed solely for three months, and only 15 percent for the recommended six months, according to background data in the study. Dr. Stuart Kincaid consults with many mothers who breast-fed and are happy with their decision. It is no secret that pregnancy and breast-feeding can take a toll on the appearance of a woman’s breast. Dr. Stuart Kincaid encourages patients that after breast-feeding the options that are available through plastic surgery are able to not only restore the woman’s shape and contour but in many cases improve it beyond its pre-pregnancy state. In most cases Dr. Stuart Kincaid will recommend a breast augmentation with either saline or silicone gel implants combined with a breast lift to correct the sagging component as well as the loss of volume most women have following breast-feeding. Overwhelmingly patients are pleased with their results and feel as though breast-feeding was the right choice for both the baby and the mother.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Do You Know Which Breast Implants You Have?
Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012
Breast augmentation remains the number one sought-after procedure in the US. Through the years millions of women have had the procedure performed. Seldom is the attention placed on the aftercare of breast augmentation. Breast augmentation can be performed with either silicone or saline implants. Breast implants remain one of the most researched and aggressively monitored medical devices available today. Currently there are three major manufacturers of FDA approved silicone breast implants. A recent scare globally turned the breast implant industry upside down. It turns out that a French manufacturer of breast implants, PIP marketed and sold a silicone gel implant that was filled with liquid gel that was not medically approved for implantation. This information added to the already struggling companies financial and marketing woes and eventually the company claimed bankruptcy. Many women were left with substandard implants that had already begun to show that they were defective and could leak the not approved silicone into the woman’s body. Although many news outlets reported that PIP implants were not sold in the United States, this is not entirely true. The silicone gel implants were not FDA approved for sale in the United States however the saline PIP implants were available for use in the United States and were implanted in a number of women all the way up to 2004. It is advised by most plastic surgeons, that breast implants are examined for complications at least once a year. Patients who have PIP implants either saline or silicone, are strongly encouraged to have them removed. Dr. StuartKincaid offers breastimplant exchange for patientswho have deflations, ruptures, or desire to change breast implant size. Currently, Mentor Corporation and FDA approved breast implant manufacturer is making a special offer for patients who have PIP saline or silicone breast implants and have the desire to change them for new FDA approved Mentor silicone gel or saline breast implants. The Mentor Compassionate Care Program offers a $250 American Express®* Gift Card to patients who replace PIP Saline or Gel Breast Implants with MENTOR® Saline or Gel Breast Implants. This program is valid from January 1, 2012 through December 31, 2012, and may be subject to program limits. A $250 American Express®* Gift Card is offered to patients who have saline implants from other manufacturers and want to upgrade to Mentor Gels. Dr. Stuart Kincaid creates expert results forbreastaugmentation as well as breastlift/ breast augmentation patients. Follow-up care is included in the initial surgery price including unlimited annual breast implant checkups.

San Diego Dr Stuart Kincaid Among the First to Offer New FDA Approved Breast Implants
Monday, May 14th, 2012
Something exciting is happening at the plastic surgery office of Dr. StuartKincaid in San Diego and Temecula. The new FDA approved silicone gel Sientra breastimplants will soon be available as an option for patients considering breastaugmentation or breastreconstruction. The new Sientra implants have been available outside of the US; however, they have just achieved FDA approval recently. Neither of the two major silicone gel implant manufacturers with FDA approval, which include Allergan and Mentor offer a line of breast implants exclusively through board-certified plastic surgeons. Sientra breast implants are only available through board-certified plastic surgeons because of the expertise required when using the wide range of breast implant options Sientra makes available. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is able to use his ASPS board certification and training to make the best breast implant selection for breast augmentation patients. As a talented and artistic plastic surgeon Dr. Stuart Kincaid realizes the vast differences between each patient’s body type, chest wall, and aesthetic desires. To best meet the desires of a patient Dr. Stuart Kincaid must take into consideration many of the patient’s physical attributes. Sientra breast implants offer many different shapes and profiles so that Dr. Stuart Kincaid is able to use the breast implants as tools to achieve a specific contour and shape for the patient. This can be extremely critical especially in patients who have a concave chest wall, a barrel chest, or scoliosis. Traditional round silicone implants could create an undesirable and an aesthetically pleasing look on these types of patients. Dr. Stuart Kincaid may suggest the high projection round silicone gel breast implant which can work perfectly for patients who need more projection in the upper portion of the breast and wider projection through the middle portion of the breast. This implant is unique to the Sientra breast implant line. Patients should contact Dr. Stuart Kincaid’s office to determine if the Sientra breast implant line is a good breast augmentation or breast reconstruction option for them. Plastic Surgery Blog: Smoking May Increase the Chances of Hot Flashes
Friday, May 4th, 2012
Menopause can cause debilitating symptoms for some women. These could include frequent hot flashes. According to a new study in an article published online, smoking can increase the chances of having hot flashes occur. According to the article women smokers with specific gene variants are at an elevated risk for menopausal hot flashes compared to smokers without these genetic differences, the new study says. A detailed look at the data from nearly 300 late reproductive-age women who were part of the study for 11 years concluded that smokers with certain variations (single nucleotide polymorphisms) in genes that play a part in the patient’s metabolism are at greater risk for having hot flashes than smokers without these gene variants. The study appears in the June issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. The report shows the impact of smoking on hot flashes as a part of variants in genes combined with sex steroid metabolism in late reproductive-age women, and infers that certain smokers have increased risk for hot flashes based on their genetic makeup according to lead author Dr. Samantha Butts, of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, which were provided in the journal news release. The study provides yet another reason for women to discontinue smoking. This holds true especially for women beyond 40 years of age. Dr. StuartKincaid explains to patientswho are scheduled for surgery the smoking increases the risk substantially for surgical complications. The most common complications patients seen include delayed, and necrosis. The most common procedures where these complications are seen include breastlift, breastreduction, facelift, and abdominoplasty. These procedures require tightening the skin and can produce tension on the incision. Smokers have compromised tissues and therefore a greater risk of the incision being compromised. This can lead to delayed wound healing and in some cases necrosis. Patients should not smoke at least four weeks prior to surgery and four weeks after surgery for the best chance of reducing complications due to smoking. Plastic Surgery Blog: Chocolate can make you thinner (sort of)
Wednesday, March 28th, 2012
Could it be that like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory -we could actually indulge in chocolate on a daily basis and make ourselves thinner? If so, there must be a catch. Right? According to recent CNN localonlinearticle, here’s the scoop: Dr. Beatrice Golomb, associate professor of medicine at University of California, San Diego, has published a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine associating regular chocolate consumption with a lower body mass index, or BMIGolomb and her team surveyed 1,018 men and women aged 20 to 85 years old about their weekly consumption of food. Those who reported that they ate chocolate on a frequent basis had lower BMIs. Even more alarming, the lower BMI group did not report consuming less calories or working out more than their more obese counterparts in the study. “That does not mean that you can eat unbounded amounts of chocolate,” Golomb says. Here comes the catch. The research is intriguing and quite interesting. Golomb had theorized that the metabolic benefits of chocolate – characteristics that would moderately increase your metabolism – would throw off the calories eaten. “I wasn’t bold enough to conjecture that the net effect would be favorable.” But that’s what the results showed Golomb added. Studies have shown for years the heart-healthy benefits of eating moderately small amounts of chocolate, says registered dietician Nancy Copperman, director of Public Health Initiatives at the North Shore-LIJ Health System in New York. Dark chocolate specifically is high in anti-oxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties. It appears as though medical professionals are not ready to claim the benefits of chocolate as a cure-all to obesity. As a matter of fact, just this week the New England Journal of Medicine concluded that for morbidly obese patients suffering from type II diabetes, bariatricsurgery is a more effective treatment than medical therapies. Proving that , remedies for obesity continue to be on the forefront of research. What many patients do not realize, especially those who have lost a massive amount of weight, the excess skin that is left behind can be extremely debilitating. It is not just a matter of appearance; it can also cause skin irritation and hygiene concerns. Patients complain mostly of loose skin on the arms, lower abdomen, and breast. Most often, Dr. StuartKincaid will recommend a brachioplasty for the arms, and an abdominoplasty for the abdomen, and a breastliftand/or reductionfor the breast. All of these procedures are rather invasive are typically done in stages rather than all at one time. Obesity should be approached based on three results: #1 losing the weight, #2 maintaining a stable weight, #3restoring the body to its best health and appearance. Unless a person addresses all three areas they are highly likely to regain the weight. Become a Fan on Facebook Follow us on Twitter More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic Surgery Blog: Advice for Healing Scars After Cosmetic Surgery
Tuesday, March 27th, 2012
It is rare that patients have a cosmetic surgery consultation, and do not ask about scarring. Much of the advice that is given to patients online concerning ways to reduce the chance of scarring is largely promotional. A recent onlinearticle gave some practical advice outside of selling their product. According to the article they advised against smoking. Smoking causes a vasoconstriction which will compromise tissue healing. Delayed healing is very common in smokers. The article advised against drinking alcohol (in moderation if necessary); the article claims that alcohol causes oxidation in the tissues. It is likened to rust on a car. The article recommends eating well, exercising and keeping stress at a minimum. It also recommends taking a good multivitamin preferably one with antioxidants. Many online sources sell surgical vitamins to be used prior to surgery. For at least six weeks prior to surgery, patients should use a good medical grade skin care regimen to prep the skin; this should include products with Retin-A , hydroquinone, hydrocortisone, and alpha-hydroxy acids. Healthy skin has the best chance to heal better and this in turn should improve scars. Dr. StuartKincaid advises patients to take a proactive approach to taking care of incisions to help aid in the process of healing and scarring. Patients must understand that genetics also play a part in how a scar heals. Scars that have tension on the incisions have a greater likelihood of spreading and have more difficulty healing. These would include incisions from facelift, breastlift, abdominoplasty and other procedures that pull the skin tightly. The reality is that all scars heal with time. It is the overall attitude of most patients that a scar pales in comparison to the benefits most patients receive after having plasticsurgery. New type of breast augmentation surgery dubbed ‘gummy bear breast implants’ in San Diego
Thursday, March 22nd, 2012Most of us are well aware of what a gummy bear is – those squishy candies that resemble the shape of a bear in a multitude of colors, tastes, and textures. But now, “gummy bear” may have a whole new connotation if the US Food and Drug Administration approves the latest in breast augmentation surgery called the gummy bear silicone gel breast implant.
The gummy bear implant is the popular name for a new kind of breast augmentation implant in the form of a cohesive gel as reported by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. The gummy bear implant is a form-stable gel silicone breast implant approved for use in Europe and Canada, however, they are not approved for use in the Unites States.
According to a recent poll, eight hundred women were surveyed on the types of breast implants they are most interested in. According to those results nearly half of the women surveyed – nearly 800 – said they would be willing to wait for the gummy bear breast implant to be approved in the United States before actually undergoing any kind of breast implant surgery.
Why the excitement over gummy bear implants?
“[These implants] are longer-lasting and maintain a more attractive and predictable shape,” said one plastic surgeon. “The gel they’re made of is less liquid-like and more solid-like than even today’s other cohesive silicone gel implants.”
A gummy bear implant can resist gravity better than other kinds of breast augmentation procedures according to clinical trials, and many women experience less scar tissue and fewer complications. Some cons include a higher price point and a larger incision compared to other kinds of breast surgery in San Diego.
For women looking to undergo plastic surgery in San Diego, and who want a natural and yet enhanced physical shape, consider setting up a consultation with Dr. Kincaid to see what type of breast surgery is best for your desired outcome and desired size.
While the “gummy bear implant” is not approved for use in the United States, there are other types of cohesive gel implants available for use. Plastic surgery blog:Caffeine laced Aeroshot gets warning from the FDA
Wednesday, March 7th, 2012When the Aeroshot was announced late last year for introduction to the market medical experts were alarmed to learn that the product carried large amounts of caffeine. According to a recent Channel 10 news report in February product inventor David Edwards told CNN Aeroshot was safe and comprehensively tested before it was introduced. There are energy shots on the exchange that have 10 times the amount of caffeine in a solitary energy shot than we have in the AeroShot. The fact is we don’t have that much caffeine in the product he said. One AeroShot contains 100 milligrams of caffeine dispensed in three to six puffs. For most healthy adults 200mg to 300mg, are acceptable doses of caffeine or about two to four cups of brewed coffee a day aren’t hazardous according to The Mayo Clinic. It warns that more than 500-600 milligrams daily can cause problems such as excessive alertness, elevated heart rate, muscle tremors, and abdomen upset. U S Sen Charles Schumer( D )New York, sent a letter in December urging the FDA to appraise the safety and legality of AeroShot. “The bottom line is this product asks more questions than we have answers, and to have it on our shelves preceding those questions being answered, this is a serious, serious ,serious mistake “he said in a news conference in February. AeroShot falls under FDA regulations for dietary supplements. Those products include vitamin C pills, some weight loss products and certain energy drinks. The business making them is responsible for determining that the dietary supplements it manufactures or distributes are safe and that any representations or claims constructed about them are truthful, by acceptable corroboration to show that they are not fictitious or erroneous according to the FDA website. It’s uncommon for the agency to disallow a supplement. It stopped the sale of the diet supplement Ephedra but only after deaths and adjunct comprehensive side effects were broadcast. In ordinary circumstances plastic surgeons would not concentrate on elevated caffeine intake for patients. Products such as AeroShot could raise slight concerns for patients considering surgery. For example, patients may believe that because they are not permitted to have anything to eat or drink the morning of surgery that having a “puff” or two of this caffeine laced product will not affect their surgery. This could be a problem since medical professionals are concerned with elevated levels of caffeine causing jitteriness and increased heart rate. Dr. Stuart Kincaid speaks to his patients not only concerning their health but also their lifestyle. Patients considering breast procedures including breast augmentation, breast reduction, or breast lift are asked about the consistency of their breast tissue and if in fact they have concerns with a lumpy bumpy consistency to their breast tissue. For some patients caffeine increases the tendency to have this consistency. Many primary care physicians advise their patients who have this concern to limit their caffeine intake. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is concerned for his patient’s health as well as well their results.
