The latest in wrinkle reduction: “Frotox”

Friday, May 10th, 2013

Women who have been hesitant to Botox may have something to celebrate now that a new product in wrinkle reduction is due to hit the market as early as next year. “Frotox” – a pending treatment that aims to freeze nerves as opposed to paralyzing them – is making headlines for the next best thing in beauty treatments.

Iovera is a toxin-free wrinkle treatment, but ladies who are eager to try the new product will have to wait at least one year – this beauty innovation is approved in Europe only. It works by giving so-called “cold shots” to nerves that control muscular movement in the face, temporarily freezing those muscles for smoother, younger looking skin for up to 4 months.

It’s called “focused cold therapy” and works with a totally new ingredient: liquid nitrous oxide. As the special formulation travels down an especially thin needle, it changes into a gaseous form as soon as it exits the instrument and into the muscle. It then produces a very precise area of cold – so cold, it essentially freezes the nerves within the muscle tissue. The effect is an all-around, smoother looking face that lasts wrinkle-free for up to 4 months.

Women who have been hesitant to use Botox can look forward to an alternative when it comes to keeping the face younger-looking and wrinkle-free.

“Iovera is the world’s first toxin-free anti-wrinkle treatment,” said one UK-based plastic surgeon. “It’s a unique stand-alone treatment in its own right and shouldn’t be compared side-by-side with Botox or any botulinum toxins. Instead, we should think of it as an additional option available to people, especially those who do not want botulinum toxin injections or cannot have them due to medical reasons.”

ALTERNATIVES TO BOTOX IN SAN DIEGO

Women who are hesitant to use Botox for whatever reason don’t have to wait until next year for Iovera. You can start enjoying wrinkle-free skin right now with these Botox alternatives:

Chemical peel. A chemical peel is an excellent way to achieve smoother-looking skin with lesser recovery time compared to other plastic surgery treatments. A chemical peel works by deeply sloughing off dead skin to reveal a smoother, younger layer.

Laser therapy. Another great alternative to Botox is laser therapy. This process uses pulsed light to refine the skin’s surface. It helps to stimulate collagen production for permanently tighter looking skin.

Restylane. Sometimes women don’t need Botox – it’s simply of adding volume as opposed to reducing wrinkles. Restylane is a filler – different than Botox which simply relaxes muscles. Instead, Restylane provides the much needed volume a face needs to appear younger. Used in the cheeks, chin, nasolabial folds and other areas of the face, Restylane is an ideal choice for a youthful look.

Gwenyth Paltrow, world’s most beautiful woman, talks about Botox

Monday, May 6th, 2013

The reigning Gwenyth Paltrow, who was recently crowed the world’s most beautiful woman, recently talked to Harper Bazaar magazine about her experience with Botox. While it’s true that Botox usually appeals to most women, Ms. Paltrow said the procedure just wasn’t for her.

“I’ve probably tried everything,” she told the mag. “I would be scared to go under the knife, but you know, talk to me when I’m 50. I’ll try anything. Except I won’t do Botox again, because I looked crazy. I looked like Joan Rivers!”

The truth is that Botox needs to be applied conservatively for most women to achieve the look that is natural and beautiful. If too much Botox is administered, women can quickly look unnatural.

Undoubtedly, Gwenyth Paltrow is undeniably gorgeous Botox or without! It’s also a good idea to note that Botox is not always the solution. Sometimes Restylane, Juvederm or even chemical peels are the correct answer to aging concerns. Sometimes, Botox should be held off for these procedures instead. It’s a good idea to talk to a plastic surgeon in San Diego to understand what products are best for the desired look. Remember, Botox isn’t always the answer – sometimes, injectables are the best way to get that youthful look!

Paltrow isn’t the only celeb to shun Botox. Nicole Kidman recently said Botox was not the right anti-aging treatment for her.

“I did try Botox, unfortunately, but I got out of it and now I can finally move my face again.”

Paltrow’s mother on the other hand, found Botox to be the idea solution to her aging concerns.

“Well, I think we’ve all fooled around with [Botox],” Blythe Danner said in 2010. “I won’t go into detail, but we all need a little help from our friends!”

UNDERSTANDING BOTOX IN SAN DIEGO & OTHER ANTI-AGING OPTIONS

It’s so important for women to understand that Botox isn’t the end-all solution to removing fine lines and wrinkles. Sometimes, there are other remedies like laser treatments, chemical peels or fillers like Restylane and Juvederm that offer the youthful look you desire.

When it comes to understanding personal beauty, talk to a plastic surgeon in San Diego. Call our Dr. Kincaid, an award-winning plastic surgeon in San Diego, at  858-450-4199 and schedule a consultation today.

Remember, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all definition of beauty. There are many options available to achieve the look you desire. Talk to a plastic surgeon that understands that – give us a call today.

Michael Kors to expand into cosmetics

Friday, April 12th, 2013

We can all look forward to a new change in cosmetics now that Michael Kors has joined the lineup. Ladies everywhere have a little something to celebrate! All-American pink lip gloss? Quintessential red lipstick? All by the arguably most heralded fashion icon today? Don’t mind if we do!

Michael Kors announced earlier this month that he will be launching a cosmetic line to go with his already popular Americana fashion brand. Women will have a full line of cosmetics to choose from including color products, skin and sun care, and even three new fragrances.

As reported by WWD magazine and reprinted on Fashionista.com, the so-called “quippy” designer will be featuring three distinct lines that include “sporty,” “sexy,” and “glam.” Each collection will feature different color and fragrance experiences.

“I think those three things–sexy, sporty and glam–have always been the DNA of Michael Kors, and in a strange way, the Michael Kors woman really is all three of those things–it’s just that she feels more strongly about one of them at certain given times,” Kors told the trade.

As for inspiration for the brand, Kors looked to his most important influences.

“My grandmother was over-the-top glam — she worshipped at the altar of Elizabeth Taylor,” Kors said. “And I then had the absolute opposite in my mother, who wore very natural makeup, very little print, was very laid-back and relaxed and sporty.”

Pricing for Kors’ cosmetic brand will range from $18 to $95 with such offerings as nail lacquer to fine fragrances. What you won’t find are things like mascara or foundation.

“I wanted to do the essentials–the things you absolutely have to have to represent that mood,” Kors said.

MAKE YOUR FACE LOOK AMAZING WITH THE RIGHT SKIN FIRST

If you’re excited about Michael Kors’ new cosmetic line, you’re not alone. When it comes to cosmetics, nothing looks fresher or more put together than a clean slate – polished, beautiful skin, that is. And that’s true no matter what brand of makeup you prefer.

To make the most of your cosmetics and to make your beauty routine absolutely pop, consider the following add ons:

Botox. Heralded as one of the most essential beauty treatments, Botox is an excellent way to combat existing wrinkles while combating future ones. It’s safe and effective as a wrinkle relaxer and has helped women everywhere enjoy younger looking, more beautiful skin.

Chemical Peel. For a youthful, rejuvenated look, women turn to chemical peels to achieve the look. A chemical peel sloughs off the first few layers of skin. As healing begins, you can look forward to softer and younger looking skin.

For more information on Botox or chemical peels in San Diego, call Dr. Kincaid at  858-450-4199 and schedule your consultation today.

Taylor Swift bares natural eye: The tale of the beauty trademark

Thursday, April 11th, 2013

There are some beauty staples that never go away: red lipstick, the perfect full coverage foundation and, of course, the quintessential black eyeliner. Hollywood starlets have each picked up their own beauty trademarks, taking the beauty staple a step further. Gwen Stefani and red lips, Dita Von Teese and the cat eye, Nikki Minaj and patent pink gloss, J.Lo’s perpetual glow… These gals show us how beauty trademarks are done. But in a new twist, one starlet known for her black liner, went against the face of trend when she bared her beautiful natural eyes in a recent photoshoot.

Taylor Swift made fans take a second look when she went without her famous black eyeliner in her latest photo montage at Wonderland magazine.

Swift, 23, wore a red Christian Dior dress and a natural face for the photo spread, a surprise that delighted fans even though she was without her signature black eye liner.

The country-star-turned-Hollywood-starlet told The Daily Makeover that her black eye liner was one beauty staple she simply could not do without.

“I was on a plane to Japan about two years ago and I had no makeup with me, so I went into the bathroom and I used a Sharpie to line my eyes. From that point on I started using liquid liner because I realized it was obviously pretty easy for me to do! I definitely don’t recommend drawing on your eyes with a Sharpie though,” she said.

Her fans were all about her new look featured in Wonderland magazine. “Your eyes are perfect. OMG,” tweeted one adoring fan. “I love your real eyes,” wrote another.

ON BLACK LINER

Black eyeliner is a true-and-true beauty staple but it’s future is decidedly uncertain. That’s because New York Fashion Week was free from much of any black liner at all. Instead, models were smudged with a dash of shiny facial cream or light touches of peach concealer for an ultra-natural, fresh-faced look.

“Makeup trends come and go depending on what colors and fabrics are emphasized at that particular moment and in general we’re seeing less eyeliner right now,” says MAC Cosmetics Senior Artist John Stapleton. “Women can play with black liner to make their eyes look sultry and catlike, but traditionally the purpose of eyeliner is to make the lashes look thicker so in that regard it’s supposed to be subtle.”

REINVENTING YOUR LOOK

If you’re considering a new look, a makeover could be just the trick to make you feel better and get a head start on the spring season. To make the most of your new look, you may want to consider the condition of your skin and any rejuvenation that could benefit your overall appearance. Some options include microdermabrasion and Botox – two beauty essentials that can make your skin look absolutely incredible. Makeup glides on beautifully and you can look years younger.

Improving self-esteem 4 steps at a time

Saturday, April 6th, 2013

When it comes to feeling better about yourself, now is the time – with spring in the air, you can start feeling better about the way you feel. A negative impression of how you view yourself can lead to a whole host of problems including depression, poor self-image and even cause interference in your personal and professional life. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery says that now more than ever, high self-esteem can be achieved with four simple steps.

1. Tell yourself that you are amazing every day

Most of us are used to dismissing compliments, much less accepting them from ourselves. But it’s so important to tell yourself every day that you are an amazing person inside and out. Try telling yourself out loud that you are a good person and that you look beautiful – try to even memorize some favorite phrases that you can repeat when you are feeling in the dumps or if you’re just having one of those days. It really works even though you may feel silly doing it, so get started on your positive daily affirmations today.

2. Posture

Never has it been so important to stand tall and proud of yourself. Hunching over not only looks unflattering for all of your body, but it can subconsciously lead to a negative perception of yourself when you are constantly looking at the ground. Get started on a more confident version of you and start standing taller, with a straight spine and your head looking forward.

Surgery.org says, “Pretend there is an invisible string attached to the top of your head and your shoulders constantly pulling you gently upward toward the ceiling. This will help keep your neck straight and your shoulders squared.”

3. Personal Days

Sometimes, it’s important to take a moment to reflect on yourself and where your life is going. Get started on improving your mental health by resting your mind. Take a day off work and dedicate it to yourself. Think of your life and how you feel about the relationships you are maintaining. If there are any negatives that need pruning, don’t hesitate to remove or improve those elements in your life. It’s the only way you can really make progress toward improving yourself and your self-esteem.

4. Look Great

There’s something to be said about a beautiful outward appearance. If you are feeling like you need to a lift, try a non-invasive procedure such as Botox, chemical peel or microdermabrasion. These relatively easy in-office procedures can lead to a more youthful version of you. Why not consider an uplifting makeover to make the most of your self-esteem?

For more information on any of these procedures, call Dr. Kincaid at his centrally-located Temecula office at 951-695-9934 and schedule your consultation today.

Spring is in the air! Your new fitness and beauty routines await.

Thursday, April 4th, 2013

Now that spring has sprung, a new air of motivation can be felt everywhere from the covers of fashion magazines to the smiles on the faces of women across America. If you’re like many, spring is the perfect time to reassess your fitness, beauty and skin care routine. Not only will you feel better about yourself, but you can also look years younger while shedding off winters’ grey.

Fitness

According to Surgery.org, your fitness routine can be reinvigorated with changing your routine to be primarily outdoors. Anything from yoga to jogging, hiking and swimming can now be an outdoor activity. Outdoor fitness is a great idea for shedding the extra pounds that winter and holiday eating and stress has packed on. Now is the time to get going! You can even start as simply as walking every morning. Increase your resistance by adding ankle or wrist weights or practice endurance by stepping it up to a daily morning jog.

Skin Care

Since you will be spending more time outdoors, there’s never been a more important time to protect your skin. As most women know, the sun is the primary cause of wrinkles, fine lines and age spots – huge deterrents to keeping your skin looking young and refreshed. Wearing sunscreen is especially important when you exercise outdoors as well. Get ahead of the season by slathering on a daily sunscreen that’s at least SPF 30+.

Drink Water

Staying replenished with delicious, fresh water not only sounds good, but is good. Your body needs plenty of hydration to keep cells, organs and skin moist and soft. Plus, it helps your body function at prime levels internally not to mention the beautiful and healthy glow it lends to the face. Drink plenty of water as we head into spring to make the most of the increase of sunshine and longer days.

Reassess facial areas

If you are considering a change to your face whether it is a mild rejuvenation, a non-invasive procedure or a more dramatic change, spring is the perfect time to get the look you have always wanted. Cosmetic enhancements like Botox are an excellent choice for ladies who want to take years off their face and relax fine lines and wrinkles. Chemical peels and microdermabrasion are alternatively great choices for a healthy glow as well. Considering something more dramatic? Talk to a plastic surgeon in San Diego to understand which procedures can help you look younger while maintaining a natural look.

For more information on any of these procedures, call Dr. Kincaid at his centrally located La Jolla office at 858-450-4199 and schedule your consultation today and look spring-ready in no time!

Naomi Watts won’t rule out plastic surgery

Monday, March 25th, 2013

In Hollywood, it goes without saying that physical appearance is an important part of being famous. When it comes to upkeep, there’s no doubt that actors and actresses turn to the positive effects of plastic surgery to maintain their image. Naomi Watts is just one of many actresses that say plastic surgery isn’t as negatively perceived as it once was.

“Never say never — and I certainly don’t judge anyone who does it,” the actress said in her interview at Good Health. “But most of the characters I play are going through some kind of emotional turmoil, so my job requires me to have expression.”

It’s quite possible that if Watts chooses to undergo plastic surgery, she will likely opt for a natural look. Many women who seek natural-looking improvement usually opt for fillers like Restylane or facial muscle relaxants like Botox.

Watts adds that natural expression can still be possible even for women who have had work done.

“All the women who haven’t done anything to their faces are still able to play great roles,” she told the publication. “And some of the ones who have done something have messed it up — they look freakish. Anyway, for me it’s about playing women with rich lives — and the longer the life, the deeper the wrinkles.”

At 44, Watts looks undeniably fantastic – and there are many women who are also graceful agers. Microdermabrasion and chemical peels are other great options for women who want look natural while maintaining their youth. These options are especially ideal for women who are perpetually busy with home, career and children since recovery is generally speedier than other invasive plastic surgery procedures.

“There’s so much going on and [I'm] trying to balance being a mum with a career,” she admitted. “Sleep is often something I’m deprived of. But I feel so rich inside — I feel blessed to be a mother.”

Plastic surgery up 5% from prior year

Sunday, March 10th, 2013

It comes as no surprise that Americans value their appearance, and a new study confirms just that – according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, cosmetic surgery enjoyed a 5 percent increase from 2011 to 2012.

About 14.6 million procedures were completed last year, ranging from Botox to liposuction to the herald breast implant surgery. These statistics reflect the latest plastic surgery trends in the United States.

“For the third consecutive year, the overall growth in cosmetic surgery continues to be driven by a significant rise in minimally invasive procedures, while surgical procedures remain relatively stable,” said ASPS President Gregory Evans.

Minimally invasive procedures include injectables such as Restylane and Radiesse – and of course the ever popular Botox.

Evans further commented on recent trends in plastic surgery including increased spending on minimally invasive procedures. It’s possible the increase in these procedures stem from how easy it is to look younger without the downsides of plastic surgery. In addition, many men and women now realize that minimally invasive procedures can help maintain one’s image, prolonging the appearance of youth while delaying the need for plastic surgery.

In fact, minimally invasive procedures were so highly popular in 2012 that its category increased 6 percent. Botox and Dysport were the top injectables last year.

MINIMALLY INVASIVE PROCEDURES IN SAN DIEGO

If you are interested in rejuvenating your look with minimally invasive procedures, consider the following injectables to rejuvenate your look:

  • Botox

Botox is an excellent way to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles without the need for invasive plastic surgery.

  • Restylane

For much needed volume, restylane in San Diego is an appropriate choice for adding volume to the lips and cheeks.

  • Radiesse

Radiesse is an injectable that also adds volume but reacts differently in the skin. It is not an appropriate choice for the lips, but is a beautiful choice for the rest of the face, especially for cheeks.

What’s the difference between Botox and facial fillers?

Friday, March 1st, 2013

When it comes to facial cosmetic improvements like wrinkle reduction and increasing volume, plastic surgeons in San Diego turn to Botox and facial fillers to achieve the look. But what exactly is the difference between the two?

An article at the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) explains how the two beauty treatments differ.

BOTOX IN SAN DIEGO

Botox, Dysport and Xeomin brands are FDA-approved cosmetic injectable treatments that use a neuromuscular toxin to treat facial lines and improve the smoothness of the face. Muscles are relaxed when the treatment is administered, leading to a smoother-looking surface.

The key with Botox, Dysport and Xeomin is treating wrinkles that have just recently formed. A board-certified plastic surgeon injects the product into facial areas affected by fine lines and wrinkles. This alters the facial expression ever so slightly so that wrinkles won’t be reinforced in those areas.

Individuals treated with Botox can still make all facial expressions with ease – only very few facial muscles are relaxed in order to stop new wrinkle formation.

FACIAL FILLERS IN SAN DIEGO

Dermal fillers work differently than Botox in that it works on deep wrinkles to add lost volume. Many soft tissue fillers exist including Radiesse, Juvederm and Restylane.

These fillers help fill out depressed or wrinkled skin with soft, natural looking volume that adds a youthful look at any age. Dermal fillers are also used in the lips to add volume.

Cosmetic injectables dissolve in time, so ongoing treatment is recommended by plastic surgeons in San Diego.

Plastic surgery growth rises for third consecutive year

Wednesday, February 20th, 2013

For the third year in a row, plastic surgery saw a rise in overall procedures completed in 2012, with Botox, fillers and chemical peels leading the list of most popular cosmetic treatments in the United States.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons releases statistics Tuesday, reporting that 14.6 million procedures were completed last year – an increase of 5 percent from 2011. Experts say plastic surgery has been fueled in recent years due to the rise of social media and increased awareness of non-surgical procedures that don’t require a lot of downtime.

“For the third consecutive year, the overall growth in cosmetic surgery continues to be driven by a significant rise in minimally invasive procedures, while surgical procedures remain relatively stable,” said Gregory Evans, president of the society.

Botox procedures increased the most from all other cosmetic categories – an 8 percent growth from last year, totaling 6.1 million procedures in the United States. Fillers like Restylane, Juvederm and Radiesse have also increased with a 5 percent increase while laser hair removal treatments rose 4 percent. Chemical peels jumped 2 percent.

Breast augmentation topped the list for surgical procedures completed in 2012, but the procedure saw a slight decline nonetheless coming in at just under 7 percent from last year.

“Female cosmetic breast surgeries such as breast augmentation, as well as body contouring procedures like tummy tucks, were some of the most popular procedures performed in 2012, although they saw declines,” Evans explained.

Other popular procedures in 2012 included rhinoplasty, liposuction, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), and facelifts.
