Many women who often seek a more youthful, rejuvenated  turn to plastic surgery in La Jolla to achieve their desired appearance. But while any surgery is generally appropriate for any and all ethnicities, plastic surgeons often see more Caucasian women as opposed to African-American women according to a new TV special that aired on ABC’s newsweekly show “20/20.” But, as the show suggests, these trends may be slowly changing since African-American women are turning to plastic surgery to achieve a more youthful or updated look, even in light of statistics that say white women – a whopping 70 percent of those who elect plastic surgery – are the primary bulk of plastic surgery business.

20/20 host Barbara Walters interviewed several African-American women who reported getting rhinoplasty, breast augmentation and Botox injections – a trend that may be on the rise for Black women. These types of surgeries are considered less popular among women of color because darker skins tends to, for the most part, hold up well in the face of aging. This is due in part to the oiler surface of dark skin. But beyond genetics alone, African-American women also tend to shy away from plastic surgery since it carries somewhat of a stigma within the Black community.

As one interviewee explained,  “African-American women don’t need to have beauty enhancements,” although she had undergone Botox treatments to improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles.  Another dark-skinned woman added,  “I think African-American women are still in the closet about having plastic surgery….(but) I think we’re doing it a lot more.”

For women of color who are considering plastic surgery in La Jolla, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery suggests, “It is becoming increasingly important to have techniques that addresses [the individual needs of African Americans. It is vital to preserve the ethnic heritage of the given patient.”
