There have been conflicting reports about the health benefits of coffee for quite some time. A new study now says that coffee may actually add years to your life. According to a recent localnewsstory coffee appears to be good for you. At least the study didn’t say it was bad, according to researchers who led the biggest study ever performed focusing on coffee and health. They discovered that coffee drinkers appeared slightly more likely to live longer than those people who drink no coffee at all. Regular or decaf did not make a difference. This is significant because a few studies in the past came to the conclusion that coffee could be harmful. Results of the most recent study are published in Thursday’s New England Journal of Medicine. Older studies were not giving the wrong information. Coffee can increase cholesterol and blood pressure in the short term, which in turn can increase the risk of heart disease. But very few studies have looked at coffee and the risk of dying from any cause, not to mention specific diseases. This study has its imperfections as most diet studies do, the results are just based on observing people’s habits and resulting health. So it does not specifically demonstrate that coffee lengthens lives. But experts say it’s the best evidence we have thus far yet on this issue. The study involved more than 400,000 people and was done by the National Institutes of Health and AARP. Researchers also made allowances for smoking, drinking alcohol, exercise and other things that could skew results. Dr. StuartKincaid encourages older people to embrace the fact that many of them are living longer and feeling better than ever before.
