Plastic surgery blog:: Celiac Disease is Easier to Diagnose

bread Plastic surgery blog:: Celiac Disease is Easier to DiagnoseThere’s been a lot of information in the news lately concerning celiac disease and the negative effects it has on the health system. According to recent online article this difficult to diagnose disease may soon become much easier to diagnose. According to the article Celiac disease, also known as gluten intolerance is a digestive condition caused by an immune response that does not process the consumption of gluten naturally, a protein that is usually found in bread, pasta, cookies, pizza crust and other like foods. When people with celiac disease consume these foods, they often  stomach pain, bloating and diarrhea. Because celiac disease’s most frequent symptoms – as well as other symptoms like joint pain, muscle cramps, weight loss and fatigue – are the same as a number of other conditions like Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome and anemia, it is typically very difficult to diagnose. Patients who believe that they could have celiac disease should request from their physician a blood test, called the TTG antibody test. The disease often has a genetic component, so family members of celiac patients should be proactive about getting tested for the disease. With this test, the doctor will take a tissue sample from your small intestine and measure its antibodies to a protein called tissue transglutaminase (TTG) that is present naturally in the body. Generally, 90 percent of the time, if the biopsy displays elevated levels of these antibodies, a diagnosis of celiac disease will be made.  Dr. Stuart Kincaid encourages patients who complain of stomach conditions including celiac disease to be sure to disclose those to him when considering plastic surgery. This is especially important for patients considering abdominoplasty or abdominal liposuction procedures. Patients are sometimes curious to know if abdominal surgery will hamper any digestive concerns they may have. It is important that Dr. Stuart Kincaid is made aware of these prior to surgery so that he can work with the patient to be sure not to upset any current regimens or treatment that may be working. Abdominal plastic surgery often includes removing loose and lax skin from the abdomen, tightening the abdominal muscles and often liposuction is added as a finishing touch to enhance the waist. A healthy diet and exercise are strongly recommended in order for patients to enjoy the results for lifetime.
