Bodybuilders have been known to you supplements to accelerate muscle growth. According to recentonlinearticle body-building and weight-loss supplements are the kind of dietary products most likely to cause liver injury, according to a small new study. Liver injury from medication is the number one reason drugs are banned from the market. Dietary and herbal supplements — which do not need a doctor’s prescription and can be purchased over the counter or online — are consumed by up to 40 percent of residents in the United States, but their risk of harmful side effects are not well-documented. In this study, supported by the U.S. Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network, researchers looked at 109 instances of patients who seemed to have suffered liver injury because of dietary supplements. Most of the patients were men, white and obese. The study discovered that supplements for body building and weight loss were more commonly the cause of liver injury. The results are prepared to be presented today at the Digestive Disease Week meeting in San Diego. “There is so little regulation of the many products on the market,” study leader Dr. Victor Navarro, professor of medicine, pharmacology and experimental therapies at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, said in a meeting news release. “We couldn’t possibly begin to figure out which products to target first without doing this research.” Dr. StuartKincaid consults with many men who have taken supplements and in some cases even steroids as part of their bodybuilding lifestyle. For some of these men they developed excessive breast tissue which is also known as gynecomastiaas a result. Dr. Stuart Kincaid explains to patientsthat gynecomastia surgery is more than just liposuctionof the chest. It is imperative that the breast tissue is removed or after surgery the chest will not be flat. Dr. Stuart Kincaid also uses his reconstructive expertise to achieve a more natural outcome so that it is not evident that the patient has had surgery. Most men tell Dr. Stuart Kincaid after surgery that having surgery was one of the best decisions that they ever made. For many men it is an immediate boost of self-esteem and self-confidence.
