Every woman has a favorite shade of lipstick that adds the finishing touch to a hot look. When a little color or gloss isn’t enough, some women opt for cosmetic procedures to give their appearance a more youthful look. From fillers to lasers, there are several options for women who are after a perfect smile. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, procedures involving the lips have become quite popular and advances in technology allow women to select from wide variety of techniques.
As women age, the lips start to sag. “Atrophy of the lips, wrinkles around the mouth, and skin discoloration due to sun damage cannot be corrected by a facelift, but various technologies do provide pathways to improve the appearance of the perioral region and reverse the signs of aging,” said Dr. Kulick, of San Francisco, CA in a recent press release.
Lip augmentations can involve implants or other fillers to add volume to the lip. The procedure typically takes about two hours and is an outpatient procedure. In some cases, surgeons will use a material called Alloderm. This sheet of collagen is inserted in the lip for a temporary fix for full lips. It lasts about a year. Other options include fat grafting, where a surgeon inserts a person’s own fat into their lips. Other synthetic materials can also be injected into the lips for a poutier look, according to WebMD.
“While many people are familiar with lip augmentation and lip injections, a lip lift is very different. You can lift lips just as you can lift a face,” said Dr. Weston, of Reston, VA. “It’s also important to remember that bigger is not always better when it comes to lips. Our goal is about achieving total aesthetic harmony in the entire mouth area, as well as the rest of the face.”
A lip lift involves a small incision under the nose. The goal of the procedure is to widen the lips. While fillers can plump lips, a lip lift actually raises the upper lip, shortening the gap between the nose and mouth.
As always, anyone interested in a cosmetic change should consult a board-certified surgeon. Dr. Graivier of Roswell, GA says new advances in technology allow patients and surgeons to see before and after pictures of the procedure, allowing a patient to truly see how they will look after the work is done.
“The lips and the lip lines are troubling areas that effect women of all ages,” said Dr. Graivier of Roswell, GA. “New comparison scales for lip aesthetics and volume, as well as other methods of lip and wrinkle evaluation, are yielding better patient and physician understanding of goals and results.”
