According to a local online article beginning your morning with a high-protein food along with a “dessert” — similar to a doughnut or a slice of cake -could actually help you lose weight and maintain the weight loss, a new study suggests. However, as you might imagine many nutritionists reported they were unwilling to concur with the study’s findings. Researchers from Tel Aviv University’s Wolfson Medical Center in Israel did a comparative analysis of two diet regimens — one was comprised of a low-carbohydrate breakfast, the other included a high-protein, high-carb breakfast — the sweets-with-breakfast participants lost more weight after a period of eight months. “Although dietary restriction often results in initial weight loss, the majority of obese dieters fail to maintain their reduced weight,” reported the study’s authors. Diet-related weight loss often ignites hunger and cravings while reducing suppression of ghrelin, a hormone that ignites hunger, the researchers said. This may actually increase weight gain. But, a high protein and carbohydrate breakfast could help to override these impending changes and prevent obesity relapse, they concluded. The conclusions are scheduled for presentation Monday at the Endocrine Society’s annual meeting in Houston. It is not surprising that these findings are controversial.
