Just slap the wrinkles off

Monday, November 12th, 2012

There’s the proverbial beauty cream. The gold-standard glycolic scrub. The standby anti-aging serum. Yawn.

It’s the same old, same old.

So why not slap wrinkles into submission?

That’s what a new beauty parlor in San Francisco aims to do in a “revolutionary” new treatment. The Thai salon says that slapping your face is all the rage in removing unwanted wrinkles. It’s revolutionary, all right.

According to the Seattle PI who originally covered the story, the method is called “ancient Thai face slapping” which is said to firm up the skin’s surface with firm smacks to the cheeks, forehead, and chin. It aims to replace plastic surgery and injections with the theoretically same benefits.

But according to the news source, the slapping demonstration fell flat.

“After about 10 minutes, it was all over,” described the writer. “[They] said the slapping had been a great success and held up the “before” and “after” pictures they had taken… The photos looked exactly the same, not for lack of effort.”

At $350 a session, it’s certainly a pretty penny to pay for mixed results. Consider the other options that $350* could buy:

Botox. More or less guaranteed to do away with unwanted fine lines and wrinkles, Botox is a big hit with 30-, 40-, and 50-somethings that want to look a little more refreshed, rejuvenated – without looking “done.”

Injectable fillers. Restylane, Perlane, Radiesse, and other injectable fillers add the volume where volume is needed such as cheeks, nasolabial folds, and even the chin area. Volume equal youth!

Talk to a board-certified plastic surgeon in Temecula for more information on these beauty treatments. Most women are great candidates for Botox and injectable fillers.

Before you go off and spend a small fortune on “new” beauty treatments, why not consider the stuff that really works?

Anti-aging claims noticed by FDA: what’s the real scoop on anti-aging products?

Saturday, September 29th, 2012

There’s no doubt that makeup products, for most women, are a lot of fun. And when combined with anti-aging benefits, the fun is more than just meets the eye.

Today, there are literally millions of makeup products to choose from. When considering beauty products in general to include scrubs and facial creams, the beauty world is truly tremendous. And most everyone claims that their makeup product is best because of various features and benefits.

But now, the FDA is warning makeup companies to take it easy on the so-called “tricky wording” that makeup companies use to sell their products. L’Oreal Paris, one of the largest makeup brands out there, is nursing a slap on the wrist after the FDA recently issued a warning to the makeup mega-giant telling the company to stop using language that could possibly be misconstrued as a false claim.

The anti-aging claims were mainly found on L’Oreal’s website. Products like sunscreen and eye creams were particularly concerning to the FDA as these products were singled out by the FDA as potentially misleading.

For example, the company’s “Genetique Eye Youth Activating Eye Concentrate” is said to boost gene activity while stimulating youth proteins. These types of claims, when using wording the may or may not be accurate, can be a “tricky” sales pitch and mislead women into believing the product is too good to be true.

Other products, like the “Absolute Precious Cells” sunscreen also claims significant deep wrinkle reduction that’s clinically proven. Whether this claim is the case remains unclear — at least in the eyes of the FDA.

There’s no doubt that many makeup and beauty companies have similar claims. The moral of the story is that you shouldn’t necessarily believe everything you read. Beauty products can only do so much.

If you’ve used a wealth of beauty products, with no significant results, consider the following:

Chemical peels. These potent treatments slough off old, dead skin that can dull your look. By removing old skin, new skin is revealed. You can look rejuvenated with smoother skin in just one treatment. Most plastic surgeons, however, recommend a course of chemical peels for the best results.

Botox. This popular injectable is the way to go when fending fine lines and wrinkles. Botox helps skin look smoother by reducing the ability for wrinkles to manifest themselves through facial expressions. It’s considered a safe and effective way to help skin look youthful again.

Radiesse. A great injectable filler, this potent gel helps restore volume where needed. Most likely used in the cheeks, mouth, or chin areas, Radiesse can work wonders for reproducing that plump, youthful look that so many women look for in their beauty creams. Sometimes, an injectable filler is what’s needed to achieve that look.

Talk to Dr. Kincaid today to find out how you can restore your youthful look once again. It is possible, and while beauty creams and makeup are an important piece of the pie, sometimes it takes a little more. See what Dr. Kincaid can do for you. Call us today at our La Jolla plastic surgery office at  858-450-4199.

Plastic surgery on a dime: not a great idea, experts say

Friday, September 28th, 2012

The price of beauty is, well, in the eye of the beholder.

So, when a Groupon deal comes around offering plastic surgery, many men and women find themselves wondering if it’s an ugly deal.

The concern for using Groupon deals on plastic surgery follows expert recommendations on Surgery.org that warn patients not to discount their health. And, in addition to the physical concerns, some legal experts say it may be against the law to split plastic surgery fees with Groupon. With these concerns in mind, it’s no wonder many men and women are questioning whether or not it’s safe to use Groupon plastic surgery coupons.

Indeed, folks. Some plastic surgery procedures have come down to couponing. It’s a sign of the times if there ever was one.

Where are these Groupon deals found?

Across the Atlantic in the UK, a doctor put a coupon on Groupon for discounted cosmetic surgery including breast implants. After enough controversy, the Independent Healthcare Advisory Service of Britain banned the deal citing the coupon rushed people into cosmetic surgery without truly weighing the pros and cons of such procedure. The deal, in other words, rushed many men and women into making an impulse decision – something you never want to do when considering plastic surgery in San Diego.

Redbook magazine took to the controversy, too, adding, “the quality of care – not how deep the discount – should always be your first consideration.”

Recently, there have been Groupon deals like Lasik surgery, liposuction, and laser eyelid lifts. According to experts at Redbook, these types of couponing deals should be approached with caution.

Before you head into any plastic surgery procedure, it makes sense to research it and the doctor performing your cosmetic surgery. Do not assume that just because the doctor has a Groupon, he or she is qualified. Also, don’t rush into a plastic surgery procedure just because it is “on sale.” This isn’t a sweater or pair of shoes that you can throw out later. These results are, for the most part, permanent unless more revision surgery is needed to correct any mistakes.

Be sure to speak with a board-certified plastic surgeon in San Diego before you buy a Groupon discounted plastic surgery procedure. It’s always in your best interest to be aware of your options before making any drastic decisions. Also, you should be aware of any complications that can result from the surgery, and any possible revisions that could result from the procedure. Revisions would likely not be discounted, so take the total picture into consideration before jumping into a plastic surgery coupon deal.

New Liposuction Procedure Helps Irish Woman With Swollen Leg

Wednesday, September 12th, 2012

For years Roisin Gallen dealt with intense swelling in her leg. At first, doctors thought it was a response to her cancer treatment. Months later she was diagnosed with Lymphoedema, a condition that causes arms or legs to swell as a result of a damaged lymphatic system. The body’s lymphatic system is a waste disposal system, when it isn’t functioning properly fluids build up and causes parts of the body to swell.

“My life was terribly restricted. My leg was so big, it was hard to bend it,” Gallen told Mail Online. “It was like walking with a large, inflatable pillow strapped round it.”

The 45-year-old mother of two was told to wear a compression garment to keep the swelling down and perform massages that were supposed to help the fluid drain, but little seemed to help. Before long, Gallen had to buy pants that were three sizes bigger and have them altered just to accommodate her swollen leg. “It was like having elephantiasis,” said the Belfast resident.
As her frustrations mounted, she heard about a specialist that performed liposuction on people dealing with Lymphoedema. She looked up plastic surgeon Alex Munnoch at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. After a consultation, Gallen was told she was a good candidate for the liposuction procedure. She went ahead with the procedure, which involved creating 14 holes in her leg. The surgeon used special tubes to remove the excess fluid and fat build up through liposuction. The procedure is approved by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) for chronic lymphoedema, but just a handful of surgeons are performing it, which is why no doctor had suggested it to her.
Now, six months later the news outlet says Gallen is back to wearing normal sized pants. While the procedure decreased the swollen mass, it doesn’t cure the condition. Gallen will always have to wear a compression garment to keep the swelling at bay, but she says she is okay with that. “People ask me whether it bothers me that I have to wear the garment — and it’s tight and hot in the summer,” she said. “But I would honestly wear six of them at once if I had to rather than go back to how I was before my liposuction.”

While this current procedure doesn’t provide a cure, there is hope. Two surgeons at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London are working on a special surgery that could rewire the lymphatic system and bypass problem areas. It’s still in its infant stages, but according to Mail Online, new technologies are making the procedure possible for the first time. More testing will be needed, but surgeons believe it’s a promising step for people suffering with Lymphoedema.

Exercising Tips To Keep A Flat Stomach After A Tummy Tuck

Saturday, July 21st, 2012

Anyone trying to lose a few pounds knows there are a few areas on the body that are harder to tone than others. The belly is one of those pesky areas. For some, stubborn belly fat seems to hang on for dear life. Sometimes, people opt to have a tummy tuck to tackle that excess fat that doesn’t want to leave. It’s important to consult a board-certified surgeon about the procedure and about a healthy routine after the surgery. After a tummy tuck, an exercise routine is needed to keep the sculpted look from surgery, but it’s vital to incorporate the right exercises once a surgeon says it’s safe to workout.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery says many patients want to hit the gym soon after the procedure, but it’s important to heed the advice of a plastic surgeon, and not dive into a workout too soon. Most plastic surgeons in Los Angeles suggest waiting more than a month to start a moderate workout routine. “Six weeks after tummy-tuck is an adequate time for many cardiovascular type exercises,” advises one of the doctors on the site. “Running, elliptical trainer, treadmill and speed walking are all excellent forms of aerobic exercise. Weight lifting can put a significant strain on the incisions and the sutures. It is wise to begin weight lifting slowly. Six weeks is a fine time to start, but start slowly. Do less repetitions and less weight than you were used to doing. It is most important to let your body guide you.”

After the appropriate time has passed, tummy tuck patients should being an overall strengthening routine, says Livestrong.com. The health site suggests an easy start with walking, then gradually increase intensity. “A common mistake after a tummy tuck is to do a lot of abdominal exercises and little else. Especially if you have had a weight problem in the past that led to the excess fat and skin removal, it is best to begin a total body toning and strengthening program.”
Livestrong.com also suggests certain exercises to tone the “tucked” area, “During a tummy tuck, the deepest muscles of the abdomen, the rectus abdominis, are repositioned and tightened. After these muscles have healed, exercises that strengthen the rectus abdominis are called for. Those exercises include straight leg raises, reverse crunches and hanging leg raises.” Again, it’s best to discuss a workout routine with a surgeon to make sure no risks are being taken.

Tummy tuck procedures were one of the most common cosmetic plastic surgeries performed in 2011, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.  In all, more than 149,000 individuals underwent the procedure last year alone.

Report: Some Anti-Aging Methods Simply Don’t Work

Monday, June 25th, 2012

With the advances of cosmetic procedures, many men and women are able to fight the signs of aging. Decades ago, looking younger wasn’t option. Now, Botox injections, chemical peels and face-lifts are just a few of the treatments people can select to keep a youthful face. As options grow, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery says people should take care in selecting the right procedure. This warning comes on the heels of a new report by U.S. Health News that shows some of the anti-aging options that are sold over-the-counter don’t deliver results.

From creams to vitamins and everything in between, it seems there is a cheap fix for everything, including anti-aging remedies. “You really have to be careful,” Loren Schechter, chairman of the patient safety committee for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons told U.S. Health News. “There are a lot of extravagant claims out there that simply don’t check out when you look at the science.” The report talks about the increased use of vitamins to beautify one’s looks, but in reality, vitamins can do harm if they are taken in excess. Too much vitamin B, for example, has been linked to nerve damage. Too much vitamin A could lead to a higher risk of osteoporosis.

In some cases, women are willing to slather on layers of expensive creams in hopes of wiping away wrinkles, but the report suggests these products aren’t the cure-all many expect. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Surgery, an August 2011 study conducted by Consumer Reports found that most wrinkle creams are ineffective. “Nearly 80 participants used various lotions for a period of 12 weeks and had their appearance evaluated by sensory panelists who compared the appearance of their skin through photographs at various intervals throughout the study. Overall, the study found that these anti-wrinkle creams are only slightly effective, and not for everyone who uses them.”

In some cases, the FDA has even issued warnings about these creams. Earlier this year the government agency issued a warning about skin lightening products that contained high levels of mercury, making them dangerous to apply. “Exposure to mercury can have serious health consequences,” said FDA medical advisor Dr. Charles Lee. “It can damage the kidneys and the nervous system, and interfere with the development of the brain in unborn children and very young children.” While the FDA does regulate these products, they aren’t as controlled as other products. “The FDA classifies creams and lotions as cosmetics, which are defined as having no medical value,” explained the Mayo Clinic. “So the FDA regulates them less strictly than it does drugs. This means that products don’t undergo the same rigorous testing for safety and effectiveness that topically applied medications undergo before approval to go on the market.” Researchers say it is one more reason why consumers need to be aware of the products they purchase.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Coffee Gets the Nod for Longevity

Thursday, May 17th, 2012

starbucks coffee1 Plastic Surgery Blog: Coffee Gets the Nod for LongevityThere have been conflicting reports about the health benefits of coffee for quite some time. A new study now says that coffee may actually add years to your life. According to a recent localnewsstory coffee appears to be good for you. At least the study didn’t say it was bad, according to researchers who led the biggest study ever performed focusing on coffee and health. They discovered that coffee drinkers appeared slightly more likely to live longer than those people who drink no coffee at all. Regular or decaf did not make a difference. This is significant because a few studies in the past came to the conclusion that coffee could be harmful. Results of the most recent study are published in Thursday’s New England Journal of Medicine. Older studies were not giving the wrong information. Coffee can increase cholesterol and blood pressure in the short term, which in turn can increase the risk of heart disease. But very few studies have looked at coffee and the risk of dying from any cause, not to mention specific diseases. This study has its imperfections as most diet studies do, the results are just based on observing people’s habits and resulting health. So it does not specifically demonstrate that coffee lengthens lives. But experts say it’s the best evidence we have thus far yet on this issue. The study involved more than 400,000 people and was done by the National Institutes of Health and AARP. Researchers also made allowances for smoking, drinking alcohol, exercise and other things that could skew results. Dr. StuartKincaid encourages older people to embrace the fact that many of them are living longer and feeling better than ever before. Provided patientsare healthy they should not hesitate to consider plasticsurgery procedures in order to look as young and energetic as they feel. Many of Dr. Stuart Kincaid older patients choose to have facelift, browlift, and blepharoplastywhich allows them to have a complete facial rejuvenation. Patients tell Dr. Stuart Kincaid that they are thrilled with the results and that the majority of patients look at least 7 to 10 years younger than their real age.   Become a Fan on Facebook

Plastic Surgery Blog: A Pot Belly Says More About your Risk for a Heart Attack Than Your BMI

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

fat belly2 Plastic Surgery Blog: A Pot Belly Says More About your Risk for a Heart Attack Than Your BMI There are many indicators that can be used to assess a person’s risk of heart disease. According to a recent onlinearticle a potbelly could be a significant telltale sign of the risk of cardiac arrest. According to the article a “spare tire” around the middle of the abdomen raises the risk of sudden cardiac death in obese people, a new study finds. A larger waist-to-hip ratio makes a bigger difference than body-mass index when it comes to sudden cardiac death risk, said study researcher Dr. Selcuk Adabag, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Body-mass index is a measurement of weight in relation to height used to figure normal weight and obesity. Obesity, a moderate risk indicator for sudden cardiac death, and apple-shaped bodies are all associated. “The significance of this study is that it shows that abdominal obesity is an independent risk factor for sudden cardiac death, even after making allowances for factors including diabetes, hypertension and coronary heart disease,” said Adabag, who is also a cardiac electrophysiologist at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Minneapolis. Both men and women are likely to find that as they age their midsection becomes the most difficult place to lose weight. Dr. StuartKincaidencourages his patientsto be proactive concerning abdominal fat that has settled in the midsection as soon as it becomes a concern. Many patients will ignore body contour changes when they first begin to see them, and do not realize that over time it becomes likely that they will continue to gain body fat. Dr. Stuart Kincaid recommends that some patients who have stubborn areas of fat on their abdomen consider liposuctionas a solution for small amounts of fat that have not responded to proper diet and regular exercise. Abdominal liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. It is designed to improve body contour and in many cases allows the patient to drop as many as a few waist sizes. If the patient has significant loose and lax skin on the abdomen Dr. Stuart Kincaid may recommend an abdominoplastycombined with liposuction to remove the loose skin and achieve the best aesthetic result.    Become a Fan on Facebook     Follow us on Twitter    More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic surgery blog: Losing Belly Fat Is Good for Your Blood Vessels

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

fat belly1 Plastic surgery blog: Losing Belly Fat Is Good for Your Blood VesselsAccording to recent online industry article weight loss advantages are promising especially for belly fat. In a six-month weight-loss study, Hopkins researchers discovered that the more participants with abdominal fat lost, the more their arteries were able to expand when needed, which allowed for more blood to flow freely. The researchers also discovered that participants in the study who lost the weight on a low-carb diet lost approximately ten pounds more, on average, than study participants who were on a low-fat diet. Obesity increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, more so if the fat is accumulated in the abdomen above the waist. “After six months, those who were on the low-carb diet lost an average of 28.9 pounds versus 18.7 pounds among those on the low-fat diet,” says lead investigator Kerry J. Stewart, Ed.D., a professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and director of clinical and research exercise physiology at the Johns Hopkins Heart and Vascular Institute. Dr. StuartKincaid consults with patients who are concerned with abdominal fat, which in many cases include loose and lax skin on the abdomen. Dr. Stuart Kincaid explains that an abdominoplasty is not for patients who are considered morbidly obese. For the best results, patient should be at or near their ideal body weight. An abdominoplasty will remove loose and lax skin and when combined with liposuction it can shape the love handles as well as the lower back to enhance the appearance of the waist. It is important for patients to understand that maintaining a healthy diet as well as regular exercise is necessary for a  lifetime in order to maintain the results from their bodycontouringprocedures.   Become a Fan on Facebook  Follow us on Twitter  More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic surgery blog:Morning after pill available in vending machines

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

birth control pills2 Plastic surgery blog:Morning after pill available in vending machinesContraception is often a controversial subject here in the US. There has been a lot of buzz lately about a college that is making the morning-after pill available in vending machines on campus. According to Channel 10 news Shippensburg University began offering the emergency contraceptive Plan B in a vending machine along with condoms and pregnancy tests after a survey found that 85 percent of its students were in favor of it, Vice President for Student Affairs Roger Serr told The Associated Press. “The machine is really used as much for privacy as anything else, if a person wants to come in,” he said. There are specific concerns that are related to plastic surgery and contraceptives that contain estrogen. Dr. Stuart Kincaid explains to his patients that one of the risks of contraceptives that  may contain estrogen, is an increased risk of  blood clots for patients considering plastic surgery . This is especially emphasized for patients who are considering abdominoplasty, thigh lift, or other body contouring procedures.  Patients should also consider the risk of weight gain when they use contraceptives that contain hormones. Patients who have had breast augmentation could find that weight gain has become a issue with their breast size. It is not uncommon for patients to tell Dr. Stuart Kincaid that they have increased as much as 2 cup sizes. This can be rather bothersome for breast augmentation patients and they could  feel as though their breast are now too large. It is important for patients to monitor their weight for the best long-term plastic surgery results. Patients who have had plastic surgery with Dr. Stuart Kincaid are encouraged to return  for annual follow-up visits in order to assure that patients are happy and doing well with their surgical procedure
