Plastic surgery blog: Board certification, Say What?

doctor photo10 Plastic surgery blog: Board certification, Say What?

Plastic surgery and board certification first came under fire would medical doctors began to perform plastic surgery procedures which were outside of their scope of expertise. Initially explaining to patients the difference between an experienced ASPS board certified plastic surgeon and an MD who called himself a cosmetic surgeon was not very difficult. As the marketplace became more competitive and patients looked for lower cost alternative they became more willing to look the other way if the doctor was not board-certified. If you fast forward to today, many patients treat or certification like the white elephant in the room. If the doctor that they want to use is not board-certified they look the other way or pretend not to know. According to recent industry article in order to receive board certification on one of the 24 boards in the American Board of Medical Specialties (including plastic surgery with ASPS), doctors are required to complete a minimum three-year residency in their chosen specialty, and they must also pass an intensive set of oral and written examinations, according to the New York Times article. These extensive requirements are in stark contrast to rival organization, American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS), which is made up of doctors who aren’t board-certified in plastic surgery. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is proud of his ASPS board certification expertise and training. He never takes the seriousness of the accomplishment for granted. Patients considering a wide range of procedures including breast augmentation, facelift and abdominoplasty can rest assured the Dr. Stuart Kincaid comes with among the highest qualifications for plastic surgery. The ASPS not only requires expertise in the field but also requires ongoing training to ensure that their members are in good standing and current on not just trends but also solid scientific material. In this day and age there is little reason for patients to accept surgery from a surgeon who lacks specific training and expertise in plastic surgery.     Become a Fan on Facebook    Follow us on Twitter   More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic surgery blog:Young women are less likely to notice new pounds

Young woman brushing her hair1 Plastic surgery blog:Young women are less likely to notice new pounds

Most people are familiar with the term the” freshman 15″. This refers to the weight gain that occurs in order for many young women when they go off to college. A new study looked more closely at weight gain and young women and found that the freshman 15 was closer to 3 ½ not 15 pounds. That’s the good news. The bad news is that when women reported weight gain in many cases they underestimated it or did not acknowledge it at all. According to a recent online article  previous studies have found that college students in particular tend to underestimate their weight by 1/2 pound to 3 pounds. But the current study found that a significant number of women in their mid-20s didn’t recognize recent gains of between 4-1/2 and 9 pounds. It’s believed to be the first study to explore the accuracy of self-perception of weight gain. Dr. Stuart Kincaid explains to patients that weight gain can negatively impact their plastic surgery results. This includes patients who have had body contouring procedures such as liposuction or abdominoplasty as well as patients who have had breast augmentation procedures. If there is a significant amount of weight gain it  is possible for the patient’s  body contour to change, and no longer display the amazing results they had prior to the weight gain. After breast augmentation, if there is weight gain there is a chance that the patient may have a component of sagging due to the heaviness of breast tissue. If patients decide to maintain a healthy weight they should maintain the results of their plastic surgery for a lifetime.

Plastic surgery blog:Home births are on the rise

newborn baby girl3 Plastic surgery blog:Home births are on the rise

We’ve all been told there’s no place like home. According to recent Channel 10 news story mothers-to-be appear tofeel the same way. According to the news story home births have been on a steady rise for quite some time. The number of home births in the U.S. jumped by 29% from 2004 to 2009. Although home births are still rare — they account for less than 1% of all births — this is a pretty rapid increase, said Marian MacDorman, statistician at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Home births are most common among women over the age of 35 who have already had at least one child. The study doesn’t indicate exact reasons as to why there has been an increase; however, many experts believe it is due to increasing hospital cost. Homebirths are all about personal choice .”It’s difficult to have a normal birth in the hospital setting because of the culture of the hospital and interventions that are routine,” Eileen Beard, senior practice advisor for the American College of Nurse-Midwives said. Regardless of where a mother chooses to have her baby there are certain physical changes that the woman will experience that are inevitable. Dr. Stuart Kincaid consults with many women postpartum who are dissatisfied with the overall appearance of their body following childbirth. This is not to say that they are not happy about their decisions to become a mother. The two are not related and some women are made to feel guilty for pursuing plastic surgery after having children. Most women are dissatisfied with their stomach which often has stretch marks due to the increase in weight during pregnancy. Many women are also dissatisfied with the sagging component to their breast and the loss of volume. Dr. Stuart Kincaid typically recommends a breast augmentation combined with breast implants to help return shape and contour to the breast. For the stomach Dr. Stuart Kincaid may recommend abdominoplasty combined with liposuction to achieve better contour and a flatter abdomen for the patient. These procedures are sometimes called a mommy makeover. For healthy patients they can be performed at the same time and the results are to say the very least, enviable. Dr. Stuart Kincaid welcomes mothers to schedule a consultation to determine if the mommy makeover is a solution that makes sense for their specific situation.

How you sleep may determine your need for cosmetic surgery

Did you know that sleeping in a certain position can increase – or reduce, for that matter – fine lines and wrinkles?

It’s quite possibly true. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery is reporting that wrinkles, especially those found around the mouth, can be avoided by improving sleeping habits and the position in which one sleeps. In other words, the way you sleep can determine whether or not you may need plastic surgery in the future.

Experts believe that sleep position contributes most to how wrinkles develop on your face. For instance, if you sleep on your stomach or on your side, you may be pushing your face in ways that can produce wrinkles around your mouth. Over time, those positions can cause permanent wrinkles according to CBS42.

If you’re worried about your sleeping patterns and if you can already see the signs of aging, consider sleeping with a pillow tucked between the knees to avoid rolling around. Also, invest in good bedding material like a high-thread count sheet set, which may help lead to a better rest.

Botox competitor “stings” the face cream market

So, what’s more effective – Botox or bee stings?

A new product is hitting the beauty shelves this month said to contain more than 10,000 bee stings – an ingredient that may make some cringe with the very thought. Maunka Doctor, the anti-aging cream that uses bee poison brought on by a sting, is unique — but the larger question is: does it work? The verdict is still out.

Meanwhile, Botox in Temecula is a tried and true method that is tested and approved by the Federal Drug administration as a safe cosmetic treatment. But the cream, while it has its share of fans, makes no such promise despite the buzz its garnered in the press recently. But according to the Huffington Post,  sales for the bee sting cream are up 3,000 percent, being dubbed “nature’s alternative to Botox.”

Few cosmetic beauty creams can stand up to Botox, however. And other injectables like Juvederm, Restalyne, and Sculptra – generally all of which provide long-lasting, natural results without the risk of the “buy and try” method – are also popular choices for men and women looking to reduce fine lines and wrinkles using a minimally-invasive approach.

As Surgery.org is reporting, Botulinum Toxin type A is the primary ingredient used in the Botox injectable. This primary ingredient is used to block nerve signals, thereby reducing activity in the facial muscles that often produce wrinkles. That’s why so many men and women turn to the proven results of Botox Cosmetic.

Giving the gift of plastic surgery – but how young is too young?

Nowadays, giving the gift of plastic surgery is more popular than it was a few years ago. No longer are men and women embarrassed to give the gift of physical enhancement. In fact, many teens are frequently asking for plastic surgery like rhinoplasty, liposuction, and breast augmentation in San Diego. But now, in a new headline from the UK, a British woman known as the “Human Barbie” is passing along the gift of plastic surgery to her 7-year-old daughter.

But how young is too young?

As Surgery.org is reporting, the 51-year old Sarah Burge has given plastic surgery vouchers to her 7-year-old daughter Poppy as a Christmas stocking stuffer.

“She asks for surgery all the time,” Burge told The Daily Mail. “She wants to look good and liposuction is one of those procedures that will always come in handy.”

The voucher is not Poppy’s first, either. For the child’s birthday, her mother gave her another voucher for breast implants when she turns 16.

“Poppy begged me for a boob job, so I gave her the voucher so she can have it after she’s 16, when it’s legal,” Burge said in a British publication The Closer. “If she develops naturally big boobs, she can have something else done with it.”

The 7-year-old is thrilled at receiving her gifts, explaining, “I wanted a new computer, a holiday and a voucher for surgery. When I got it all, it was a dream come true. All my friends were jealous. I can’t wait to be like Mummy with big boobs. They’re pretty.”

Teen plastic surgery: a possibility in today’s evolving world

Gifting plastic surgery to a 7-year-old might be controversial, but ultimately, the child will use the vouchers when she’s older and likely to be in her teens. It’s more common than ever for teen girls and boys to request plastic surgery. And in California, our state is particularly ahead of the curve. If your teen is asking for plastic surgery and you believe it can help your son or daughter feel more confident about themselves, learn more about our most popularly requested surgeries below.

Breast Implants

Breast implants in San Diego are a common request among teens. Generally, parents attend consultations with their daughters to determine the right size and post-surgery expectations. Teens often heal quickly after surgery and parents are daughters are equally pleased with the results.

Rhinoplasty

If your teen is self-conscious about the appearance of her nose, parents may want to attend a plastic surgery consultation with your teen to determine if rhinoplasty is the right choice. A qualified San Diego plastic surgeon can help you determine the best procedure for your teen that’s also natural-looking.

Liposuction

Some teens elect to undergo liposuction procedures to help reduce unwanted areas of built-up fat deposits. If diet and exercise are not enough, parents and teens may want to discuss liposuction options with a knowledgeable plastic surgeon in San Diego.

Plastic surgery blog:Study says: Digital multitasking no substitute for face to face

images Woman using the internet3 Plastic surgery blog:Study says: Digital multitasking no substitute for face to face When it comes to communication most of us use the Internet, smart phones, and live chat as a large portion of our two-way communication. The older the person the less likely they are to believe that it actually replaces live face-to-face human interaction. According to recent Channel 10 news story young girls are at risk of developing problems with their social interaction when they suspended too much time relying on digital communication as their main source of communication. Although Facebook, twitter,YouTube and other social networking sites encourage young people to stay plugged in constantly with only 24 hours in the day something has to be reduced.unfortunately, the trend has become to reduce face-to-face interaction in favor of digital communication.”No one had ever looked at this, which really shocked us,”  Clifford Nass, a Stanford professor of communications who worked on the study said . “Kids have to learn about emotion, and the way they do that, really, is by paying attention to other people. They have to really look them in the eye.” Patients must remember just as it is detrimental for young girls to spend too much time with digital communication as their source of information so it is with patients who use the Internet to gather information about plastic surgery. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is committed to providing valuable information for prospective patients and mostly every forum. Dr. Stuart Kincaid has a heavy presence throughout the Internet. but, for patients who are considering procedures like breast augmentation and facelift switch between sites and viewing hundreds of before and after photos can lead to more confusion than answers. Dr. Stuart Kincaid encourages patients to schedule a consultation face-to-face to discuss their specific needs and desires. This is the best way to establish a long-term relationship with Dr. Stuart Kincaid and his staff.   Become a Fan on Facebook    Follow us on Twitter    More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic surgery blog:Men who are narcissistic are more stressed study says

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

stressed man1 Plastic surgery blog:Men who are narcissistic are more stressed study says

According to channel 10 a recent study pointed out that narcissistic men have higher levels of cortisol which is a stress hormone. ”The more narcissistic, the more cortisol that men have in mundane situations,” said author Sara Konrath, who is the director of the Interdisciplinary Program on Empathy and Altruism Research at the University of Michigan. Narcissism is a trait that exhibits” grandiose” and” larger-than-life ” personality traits. When it is extreme it is considered a mental personality disorder. Narcissistic people tend to overestimate their intelligence, attractiveness, and other personality traits. They do not enjoy relationships with others because they are short on empathy and high on hostility. In the study researchers found that men who would be considered narcissist had 2.5 times the stress hormone cortisol than their female counterparts who are also considered narcissist. So, it is likely that men who are narcissistic suffer stress more than women who are narcissistic. This study is interesting because as more men choose to pay attention to their appearance most would not want to be categorized as narcissistic. Dr. Stuart Kincaid assures his male patients that making an effort to maintain their most youthful appearance is not an act of narcissism. Many men decide to use non-invasive injectable products including Botox, and fillers including Restylane and the long-term filler Sculptra. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is a member of the Liquid Facelift Association and considered an expert injector. Men should not hesitate to treat the signs of aging or fear that they may be perceived in a negative light.

Plastic surgery blog: Ladies nod is not always a yes

dating couple2 Plastic surgery blog: Ladies nod is not always a yes

We don’t need a lesson in anatomy to understand that men and women are different. Communication between men and women has been the source of many relationship articles and documentaries. A recent Psychology Today online article highlighted the mixed signals that could be sent by the nod of a woman interpreted by a man. According to the article when a man notices a woman’s nod in response to his information he interprets it as her being in agreement with him. The woman on the other hand, may only be conveying that she understands what he is saying and hears him clearly. This can be a misunderstanding that could be blown out of proportion if in fact the man believes she agrees and she then tells him that she does not. The article stresses that women should not abandon what is innate which the nod of approval; however, they should understand that men may interpret it as their agreement to what he is saying. Dr. Stuart Kincaid has been awarded a host of accolades because of his commitment to patient satisfaction. Effective patient communication is critical to a positive patient experience. Dr. Stuart Kincaid and his staff are committed to understanding not only what the patient is communicating but also asking the right questions to determine the expectations of the patient. Procedures such as breast augmentation which not only require a decision to have the procedure, but also a preference of size, shape and type of implant are heavily dependent upon effective communication. Dr. Stuart Kincaid enjoys a robust referral practice because he is empathetic to his patient’s needs and desires.

Plastic surgery blog: Is pain equal for men and women?

shoulder pain Plastic surgery blog: Is pain equal for men and women?

The common belief held among most people is that pain is gender neutral. The idea is that women and men both feel pain equally. When we consider the tolerance of pain most people believe that women can tolerate more pain because of their ability to bear children. A recent Channel 10 news story highlighted a study that indicated that women may in fact feel more pain than men. According to the article in the largest study of its kind, Stanford researchers analyzed electronic medical records for ratings of pain, and found that women tend to report greater amounts of pain in a variety of diagnoses. They report their results in the Journal of Pain.  The thought is that women are more vocal concerning their pain, however some experts believe the study may show that women have pain that goes under diagnosed and under treated. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is sensitive to the fear that some women have concerning the pain they may feel after having cosmetic plastic surgery. Dr. Stuart Kincaid and his staff go to great lengths to help assure patients that they are committed to making sure patients are comfortable and the associated pain is managed safely and effectively. Procedures such as breast augmentation and abdominoplasty which involve interrupting the muscle, tend to cause the most pain and discomfort. In most cases patients are prescribed both a muscle relaxer as well as narcotic pain medication to help manage the pain. In the overwhelming majority of patients this combination of medication is more than adequate. Patients who are hesitant must remember that the overwhelming majority of patients who have had cosmetic surgery procedures say that they are extremely happy and would have the procedures again even with the knowledge of the pain they have endured.
