adult acne Plastic surgery blog:Adult acne? What can you do?

Adult acne can be treated with the right products

According to news channel 8 acne is a fact of life for many women, lasting well into their 20s, 30s or 40s and beyond.

Just about everyone has pimples at some point in life. Usually, acne starts during puberty and goes away in five to 10 years. For some adults, though, (mostly women) acne never goes away. In others, it returns or occurs for the first time later in life, often around the time of menopause. This is sometimes called late-onset acne.

Adult acne can be embarrassing and tough to get rid of, but treatment can help keep it under control.

Dr Stuart Kincaid offers advanced skincare treatments and skin care products to his patients. Beautiful skin is a great way to avoid lines and wrinkles. Chemical peels and laser treatments can often rid the skin of fine lines and surface scars left behind from acne.  It is an important part of every skin care regimen to include  sunscreen. It is best if professional skin care treatments are performed once a month as a regular part of skin maintainace.

Plastic surgery blog:Depression in men can be serious

balding man 2 Plastic surgery blog:Depression in men can be serious

Depression in men often goes untreated

According to local channel 8  because depression in men often doesn’t “look” like depression with stereotypical sadness and tears, family and friends may not realize that a man is seriously depressed. Men are also socialized to be “the strong, silent type,” notes Ellen Frank, a psychologist and professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. As a result, depression in men may go unrecognized because compared with women, men are less likely to admit to emotional problems and seek help.

The most devastating consequence of depression is suicide. More women attempt it than men, but men succeed much more frequently. Women who try to kill themselves typically slit their wrists or overdose on medication, then call for help and can usually be saved. Men who attempt suicide are more likely to employ more lethal methods, like firearms or jumping out of buildings. As a result, among the nation’s 32,000 suicides each year, about 80 percent are carried out by men, according to the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics.

Dr Stuart Kincaid advises his male patients to take pride in their appearance. Sometimes men are feeling down and sad due to job  loss, a death of a friend or other life changing events. Dr  Stuart Kincaid reminds his patients that they do not have to look old,and tired. Dr  Stuart Kincaid reccomends browlifts, and bleparoplasty for many male patients. These surgeries are usually performed together. The results can help a man look ten or more years younger.

Plastic surgery blog:Experts say sunscreen fears are unfounded

sun tanning at the beach2 Plastic surgery blog:Experts say sunscreen fears are unfounded

Sunscreen is limited sun protection

In a controversial local CBS 8 report  sunscreen safety was questioned. The controversy started last spring when the Environmental Working Group (EWG), which began annual sunscreen safety reports in 2007, called on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to finish a review of data on the safety of retinyl palmitate, a derivative of vitamin A added to many sunscreens. The compound, EWG stated, elevates the risk of skin cancer. The EWG also objected to oxybenzone (benzophenone-3), another ingredient of many sunscreens, which it says is a hormone disruptor. On June 14, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) voiced his concern, too, and demanded the FDA finish its review and release the results to the public, especially given this is the time of year more people are slathering on sunscreen. Shelly L. Burgess, FDA spokeswoman, on Friday said the FDA is awaiting a final review of data on retinyl palmitate by the National Toxicology Program of the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. The findings should be in next January, she said.

“We continue to monitor the safety of all sunscreens, including those containing oxybenzone,” Burgess added. “If we become aware of safety data indicating that sunscreens are unsafe, we will take necessary action to ensure consumers have access only to safe and effective sun protection products.” But while dermatologists agree that sunscreen is helpful, not harmful, they’re also clear that it’s not enough to shade us from the sun’s penetrating rays.

Dr  Stuart Kincaid warns his patients not only about tanning in the sun , but also tanning their incisions after surgery. The scars can become permanently darker than their skin. He also reminds them that tanning a bruised area can have the same effect.  Patients having any plastic surgery procedure should realize that protecting their investment means staying away from  the damaging  sun rays.

Woman fakes breast cancer and gets jail time

Channel 10 news reported on a shocking story. A judge sentenced a Chattanooga woman to 42 months in prison for faking breast cancer and told her it was “reprehensible” that she took donations of sick leave, money and cancer patient support services for five years. ”It seems like to me some confinement is necessary,” Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Don Poole said Monday after a four-hour hearing in which attorneys for 39-year-old Keele Maynor asked for a probation sentence that would allow her to work and pay about $54,000 in restitution.

Dr Stuart Kincaid and the breast cancer survivors who he treats, are likely to be outraged by such a story as this one. Dr Stuart Kincaid performs breast reconstruction with the goal of helping to restore a woman’s breast shape following breast cancer surgery. Breast reconstruction surgery is often performed in stages.  It is an important part of breast cancer recovery and Dr Stuart Kincaid offers exceptional support every step of the way.

Poole added 10 years of probation to the sentence for Maynor, a mother of three, and ordered her taken into custody immediately. She will be eligible for parole after serving one-third of the prison sentence. He ordered her to start making $300 monthly restitution payments after her release.

Plastic surgery blog:FDA wants more restrictions on Pain Killers

precription pain medication1 Plastic surgery blog:FDA wants more restrictions on Pain Killers

Pain medication is effective when used correctly

According to Sign On San Diego the Food and Drug Administration summoned a panel of 35 outside experts to review its plan to reduce the misuse and abuse of long-acting pain relievers. The agency’s plan consists mainly of educating doctors and patients about appropriate use of the drugs.

But the FDA panel voted 25-10 to reject the agency’s proposal, saying more requirements and training are needed for health professionals who prescribe the drugs.

The government’s proposal would apply to extended release versions of opioid narcotics like morphine, oxycodone and methadone.

In one key disagreement with the FDA, panelists said doctors who prescribe opioids should be required to undergo training. The FDA suggested in its briefing that making such training mandatory could be overly burdensome, since the drugs are prescribed by thousands of physicians across the U.S.

Panelists also questioned whether the FDA’s so-called “risk evaluation and mitigation strategy,” or REMS, would have any significant impact on the epidemic of opioid abuse, which is responsible for more fatal overdoses each year than heroin and cocaine combined.

Dr. John Jenkins, the director of the FDA’s office of new drugs, said the agency’s plan was designed to address legitimate use of the drugs, not deliberate abuse.

Dr Stuart Kincaid answers questions in the initial consultation related to the degree  of the procedure the patients is considering. Most procedures  are moderate in pain. Breast augmentation and tummy tucks tend to have a greater deal of pain because of the muscle tightening involved.  Dr Stuart Kincaid assures patients that they will be comfortable after surgery with a combination of muscle relaxers and pain medication that he prescribes.  Due to the careful  monitoring of his patients abuse of the prescription medication is not a problem.

Plastic Surgery Blog: New Guidelines for Preventative Health care

drooping eyelids Plastic Surgery Blog: New Guidelines for Preventative Health care

Correcting droopy eyelids can prevent problems in the future

According to a recent local articlenew guidelines are being implemented for health care. There will be no out of pocket costs for health care that could prevent future disease. Examples are counseling for obesity and cancer screenings. An estimated 41 million Americans will benefit initially. It is wise to catch problems early…high cholesterol leads to heart disease. Chronic illness makes up 75% of health care spending at the moment. Many people skip preventative care when cost is an issue.

Preventative measures should not only be taken for our health but for our image as well. As we age our skin starts to sag and our face may not look as good as it use to. Patients may not be ready for a surgery as intense as a facelift to correct wrinkles but a brow lift, or eyelid surgery may better suit the patient.  Aging causes the eyebrows to droop and often makes unflattering wrinkles appear on the forehead. A brow lift can correct these wrinkles and smooth out the forehead while lifting the brow. Sagging skin is also present around the eyes and for this Dr. Kincaid recommends the eyelid surgery procedure.

sun tanning at the beach1 Plastic Surgery Blog: Fashion Highlights Sun Protection

Tanning without protection is never a good idea

The next new craze in the fashion industry is sun protective clothing. A recent local article wrote about the sports and active wear that is only about 15% more in cost than regular fabric. With the rise of skin cancer and the harsh California sun special attention is finally being paid to adequate protection from harmful sun rays. The clothing is great for kids, those who have had skin cancer in the past, those living in a highly elevated place, and those who are on reflective surfaces like water or snow. The article suggest choosing clothing that has ventilation for proper air circulation in the summer heat.

Dr. Kincaid offers numerous minimally invasive procures to limit the effects of the sun on the skin. Sun exposure is responsible for premature wrinkling and dark spots. By undergoing facial procedures such as the popular microdermabrasion the damaged skin is exfoliated away so that new, healthy skin can appear. New skin cells are created by the process which promotes the natural growth of the new, refreshed skin and collagen.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Drug Abuse on the Rise in Teens

prescription drugs3 Plastic Surgery Blog: Drug Abuse on the Rise in Teens

Drug abuse can find its way into the least likely places

A recent local article revealed that prescription drug abuse is on the rise among teens. In high school or Jr. High Vicodin pills go for $4 or $5. Adderall and Ritalin are also popular drugs that are abused and/or sold. While the use of illicit drugs like meth and cocaine are declining prescription drug use is through the roof. Children between the ages of 12 and 17 are the major abusers of prescription drugs. In fact, the article reports that 1 in 5 has abused medication.

When scheduling your plastic surgery procedure from Dr. Kincaid those who have children should take extra precautions with their medications. Pain medication is prescribed for pain management following surgery. Teenagers not only take the pills they may also sell them to their friends or grind them up and snort them for a quicker buzz. Also, it is important to note that pain medication can lead to severe constipation in those who take it so the use of a stool softener and the consumption of plenty of fluids is essential.
