dry eyes Plastic surgery blog: Chronic dry eye... are you a victim?

Eye conditions must be taken seriously

A recent news story  highlighted the condition chronic dry eye and who is at risk.  CBS channel 8 reported Tears aren’t just for crying. They help moisturize the eye to help you see. But sometimes the eyes don’t produce the right amount or right quality of tears. If your eyes always feel dry, irritated and uncomfortable, you may have a condition known as chronic dry eye. No more tears? Tears are needed for good eye health and vision. They spread across the surface of the eye with each blink. Tears:  Keep the surface of the eye lubricated, smooth and clear. Help wash away debris ,Protect the eye from infection .

Dr Stuart Kincaid ask patients seeking blephroplasty (an eyelift) if they suffer from dryness in their eyes. It is important to have it treated prior to surgery  for an optimal recovery. Dr Stuart Kincaid often performs upper and lower eyelid surgery together. He makes  a small incision to the upper lid and removes a small elipse skin. This makes the eye appear more alert and open. The” bags” underneath the eyes are corrected  by tightening  the skin and removing the fat pad underneath the eyes. Blepharoplasty is a procedure that should be taken very seriously. The complications can be serious ;therefore,it is important to choose an experienced plastic surgeon for your surgery.

Roller coasters can be more damaging then we thought

According to a recent channel 10 news story hearing loss has been discovered in one of the most unlikely place. Roller coasters can cause temporary hearing loss along with dizziness, ear discomfort or pain, according to doctors at the Henry Ford Hospital. They said in a news release that acceleration and high speeds can cause an injury called ear barotrauma. Quick changes in pressure cause the condition. ”As roller coasters continue to push the envelope of speed, otolaryngologists need to be aware of this new cause of barotrauma to the ear,” said Dr. Kathleen L. Yaremchuk. “Based on our research, we recommend that passengers remain facing forward for the duration of the ride to not let the full impact of acceleration hit the ear.” Previously, ear barotrauma has been linked to air travel and scuba diving, as well as to explosives in war zones.

Roller coasters can cause temporary hearing loss along with dizziness, ear discomfort or pain, according to doctors at the Henry Ford Hospital.

Dr Stuart Kincaid points out that while  the shape of the outer ear is not related to hearing loss, ears that protrude can be the source of embarrassment and low self esteem.  Many times patients have been unhappy for many years with their ears yet they were reluctant to actually have surgery.  Dr Stuart Kincaid performs otoplasty which “pins”the ears down so that they no longer stick out. Patients are thrilled with the results and most say they are sorry that they waited so long.

Plastic surgery blog: Housing permits up good econonmic sign ...move ahead with plastic surgery plans

Money will not fall from the sky;but things are getting better

No matter where you live in the world the economy has been the forefront of most news stories. Sign on SanDiego reported good news on the housing front which usually means the plastic surgery market is also forecasted to do well.

San Diego County building permits rose in March to reach their highest level this year and boost year-to-date totals by 21.2 percent over 2009, according to the Construction Industry Research Board. Single-family-home permits were up 97 percent in the first quarter compared with year-ago levels.

“To me, that shows developers are seeing this big uptick in the housing market,” said University of San Diego economist Alan Gin. “There are more sales and higher prices, and they’re reacting to that.”

There were 298 permits issued, up from 258 in February but down from 521 in March 2009, when there was a one-month spike in multifamily permits. So far this year, 841 units have been authorized by local jurisdictions, compared with 694 for the same period last year. In the first quarter this year, single-family totals stood at 585, nearly double the 297 of the first quarter in 2009.

Promising financial news helps Dr Stuart Kincaid’s patients feel less uneasy about spending money on plastic surgery. Recently many patients have been interested in breast augmentation and liposuction in hopes of being “bikini ready” for the summer. Dr Stuart Kincaid informs his patients that the staff can help them to secure very lurative financing avialable through his office.

Plastic surgery blog: Can’t sleep? Look at what you are eating

woman sleeping Plastic surgery blog: Cant sleep? Look at what you are eating

Beauty sleep is a reality and should not be skipped

A recent report on channel 10 news shared tips on foods to avoid when trying to get a good night sleep. According to the report : What about a midnight snack? Think twice — here are five foods that can prevent you from getting a good night’s rest.

 1. Preserved and smoked meats. Ham, bacon, sausages and smoked meats contain high levels of the amino acid tyramine, which triggers the brain to release norepinephrine, a brain stimulant that makes us feel alert and wired.

2. Chocolate.  Chocolate also contains tyrosine, a stimulating amino acid.

3. Energy drinks.Red Bull and other energy drinks are high in caffeine as well as the amino acid taurine, which boosts alertness and adrenaline.

4. Tomato sauce, chili, pizza and spicy foods.  Acidic and spicy foods can cause reflux, heartburn, and other symptoms that interrupt sleep.

 5. The nightcap. Wine is high in the stimulant tyrosine as well.

Dr Stuart Kincaid stresses to  his patients the importance of healthy sleep patterns. Often times the aging effects of sleepless nights have taken effect. Dr Stuart Kincaid recommends a blepharoplasty for drooping eyelids and “bags” under the eyes. This relatively painless procedure can take years off of a patients over all look. The key is to commit to the right amount of diet, exercise and sleep daily.

Plastic surgery blog: Celebrities choices to avoid pregnancy

Monday, April 26th, 2010

00Jillian+Michaels+958381671 300x225 Plastic surgery blog: Celebrities choices to avoid pregnancy

Celebrity pregnancy choices ...Who really knows?

As a society we seem obsessed with the” why”  behind the “what “a celebrity says or does. No where is this a bigger deal than right here in  Southern California.  A recent NBC report questioned what Jillian Michaels had said to media outlets concerning her pregnancy plans. According to the report  Jillian Michaels is upset with some media outlets for misquoting her comments regarding pregnancy. “The Biggest Loser” trainer is angry that she was mistakenly quoted as having told the May 2010 issue of Women’s Health that she wants children, but didn’t plan to get pregnant because it would “ruin” her body.”I never ever said that,” Jillian told AccessHollywood.com’sLaura Saltman as she promoted her new show, “Losing It With Jillian,” as part of NBC’s Summer Press Day on Monday in Pasadena.

Dr Stuart Kincaid  understands the reluctance of women to accept the significant body changes that occur during pregnancy. The good news Dr Kincaid stresses is that plastic surgery procedures can restore and sometimes improve on what the pregnancy has taken away. An abdominoplasty and liposuction help to restore the muscles as well as remove the excess skin that was stretched during the pregnancy. A breast augmentation and breastlift create a full and firm breast and increase the patients wardrobe  choices substantially.

Plastic surgery blog: Bad habits can age you 12 years

woman holding cigarette2 Plastic surgery blog: Bad habits can age you 12 years
Bad habits steal your youth

A recent article on Sign on San Diego highlighted a study that proves the aging effects of bad habits. According to the article four common bad habits combined – smoking, drinking too much, inactivity and poor diet – can age you by 12 years, sobering new research suggests. The findings are from a study that tracked nearly 5,000 British adults for 20 years, and they highlight yet another reason to adopt a healthier lifestyle.Overall, 314 people studied had all four unhealthy behaviors. Among them, 91 died during the study, or 29 percent. Among the 387 healthiest people with none of the four habits, only 32 died, or about 8 percent.

Dr Stuart Kincaid consults with patients who are seeing the aging effects of their bad habits. Usually they are unhappy with the aging of their face. Dr Stuart Kincaid will recommend a facelift, and perhaps a blephroplasty. These procedures will help the patient restore some of their youthfulness.  Dr Stuart Kincaid is sure to point out that since they have engaged in bad habits like smoking and drinking they are likely to experience delayed wound healing. It is very important that the patient is committed to quitting the bad habits that led to the premature aging in the first place. Otherwise, the results will be short lived.

Plastic surgery blog:Promises of cures by medical offices could be overstated

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010
TV Doctors Plastic surgery blog:Promises of cures by medical offices could be overstated

Effective marketing of new procedures doesn't mean the procedures are effective

Hope is something that any person with a terminal illness wants to maintain. When medical offices make false claims the medical board steps in to investigate. A recent article on Signon San Diego highlighted a local  medical office under investigation. A La Mesa health center that offered unconventional treatments and promises of recovery for numerous incurable diseases is being investigated by the state attorney general and the California Medical Board, regulators said.  Stowe  (the owner ) said Friday that FDA investigators had contacted him requesting a meeting.

He vigorously defended himself, saying the CBS program the exposed his office  left out hours of interview footage and ignored piles of evidence supporting his claims. “The foundation isn’t providing false hope,” said Stowe, 57, who lives in Fort Worth, Texas. “We’re guiding you to the only hope you have.” No stem cell therapies have been proved to effectively treat multiple sclerosis or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease), said Larry Goldstein, a geneticist and director of the University of California San Diego’s stem cell research program.

Dr Stuart Kincaid warns his patients against cosmetic procedures that pop up frequently making unsubstantiated claims. Most of these have to do with liposuction or facelifts. Board certified plastic surgeons like Dr Stuart Kincaid use their expertise to carefully review new techniques as they come to the  market. They encourage patients to use skeptisim when viewing medical cosmetic procedures and  use the society ASPS website  as a source for qualified research.

Plastic surgery blog: Out of town patients need to plan return home with security measures in mind

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010
southwest airlines 300x281 Plastic surgery blog: Out of town patients need to plan return home with security measures in mind

Preparations for flying after surgery are important

Post 911 security at airports has been a huge focus with respect to safety.  According to San Diego channel 8 needles and medications can send a red flag to security. Ann Davis, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the agency responsible for ensuring the safety of the U.S. skies, says that travelers with chronic conditions need not be concerned. Davis said that TSA officers are well-trained and familiar with the odd baggage or screening requirements that may come with certain medical conditions. What’s most important, she noted, is that you let the screeners know what medical condition you have. Davis said that the TSA doesn’t require a doctor’s note verifying a medical condition, but that it doesn’t hurt to have one.  She also advised keeping drugs, particularly liquid medications, in the original packaging with the label that shows your name, if it’s a prescription medication. But, she said, that’s not a requirement, either.

Dr  Stuart Kincaid advises his out-of-town surgery patients to be prepared as they return home to go through security without too much of a  problem. For instance, patients who have had a extended  tummy tucks or extensive breastlifts  may still have drains reducing the build up of fluid. Dr Stuart Kincaid advises patients to inform TSA of the presence of drains. Prescription medications should be grouped together in their original packaging. Dr Stuart Kincaid and his staff are experienced with out-of-town patients and help them to have the best experience possible.

Pastic surgery blog: Walking your dog is usually not real exercise

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010
Faith 8 25 300x225 Pastic surgery blog: Walking your dog is usually not real exercise

Waking the dog is rarely rigorous enough to consider it exercise

How many times have we counted our daily exercise as our dog walk? After all, it is daily and consistent. A recent  sign on San Diego report broke the news that this is really not exercise for most. The report  asked So you think you’re getting fit walking your dog? Not hardly. That’s a stroll in the park; don’t kid yourself. You can get serious about getting in shape while getting your best friend in shape at the same time. A local business, Leash Your Fitness, has set up a means of doing just that. Creator Dawn Celapino has trainers working with her to offer classes around San Diego County, where canines and their human companions can work out together. San Diego Alive tagged along during a class in Coronado’s Tidelands Park, as participants lunged and skipped their way along the shoreline. Pets didn’t just go along for the ride, they were required to sit, stay and run accordingly.

Dr Stuart Kincaid continually advises his patients to exercise and maintain a healthy diet in order to enjoy the best results from their plastic surgery procedure.  Patients who have had liposuction are particularly at risk for gaining weight if they are mislead about the potential to gain weight since they had liposuction. Dr  Stuart Kincaid explains to his liposuction patients that they have remaining fat cells in their body and that  can be over powered and allow weight gain. Liposuction body contouring can last a lifetime for patients who maintain their exercise routine.

Plastic surgery blog: Smokers risk lung cancer and are not good candidates for plastic surgery

Monday, April 19th, 2010
woman holding cigarette1 Plastic surgery blog: Smokers risk lung cancer and are not good candidates for plastic surgery

Smokers compromise healing after plastic surgery

After decades of warnings and anti-smoking laws, smoking still remains a health  issue for Americans. A recent  study published on sign on SanDiego.com screening smokers for cancer with lung scans can lead to a high rate of false alarms, unneeded tests and biopsies, a new study suggests. Some hospitals are promoting lung cancer screening with a special X-ray called a CT scan. And some advocacy groups encourage current or former smokers to get tested.

However, there’s no convincing evidence that such tests save lives, and no doctors group recommends routinely screening smokers who don’t have symptoms of lung cancer. Government researchers are studying whether the scans could save lives. While researchers are still waiting for the answer to that, they do have results on just how often scans are wrong. Scientists with the National Institutes of Health say doctors and people considering lung scans should take into account the high risk of false alarms in their study of 3,200 people. For those who got CT scans, the risk of a “false-positive” – finding a harmless spot – was 21 percent after one scan and 33 percent after two. For chest X-rays, the risk was 9 percent after one, and 15 percent after two.

Dr Stuart Kincaid warns patients who smoke of their increased risk with plastic surgery procedures, There could be delayed wound healing with breast lifts, abdominoplasty, and thighlifts, just as a few examples.  Ideally patients should quit  smoking at least two weeks prior to surgery. If  the patient is unable to quit Dr Stuart Kincaid takes extra precautions to ensure the best possible recovery experience.
