Plastic Surgery Blog: A Pot Belly Says More About your Risk for a Heart Attack Than Your BMI

May 15th, 2012

fat belly2 Plastic Surgery Blog: A Pot Belly Says More About your Risk for a Heart Attack Than Your BMI There are many indicators that can be used to assess a person’s risk of heart disease. According to a recent onlinearticle a potbelly could be a significant telltale sign of the risk of cardiac arrest. According to the article a “spare tire” around the middle of the abdomen raises the risk of sudden cardiac death in obese people, a new study finds. A larger waist-to-hip ratio makes a bigger difference than body-mass index when it comes to sudden cardiac death risk, said study researcher Dr. Selcuk Adabag, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Body-mass index is a measurement of weight in relation to height used to figure normal weight and obesity. Obesity, a moderate risk indicator for sudden cardiac death, and apple-shaped bodies are all associated. “The significance of this study is that it shows that abdominal obesity is an independent risk factor for sudden cardiac death, even after making allowances for factors including diabetes, hypertension and coronary heart disease,” said Adabag, who is also a cardiac electrophysiologist at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Minneapolis. Both men and women are likely to find that as they age their midsection becomes the most difficult place to lose weight. Dr. StuartKincaidencourages his patientsto be proactive concerning abdominal fat that has settled in the midsection as soon as it becomes a concern. Many patients will ignore body contour changes when they first begin to see them, and do not realize that over time it becomes likely that they will continue to gain body fat. Dr. Stuart Kincaid recommends that some patients who have stubborn areas of fat on their abdomen consider liposuctionas a solution for small amounts of fat that have not responded to proper diet and regular exercise. Abdominal liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. It is designed to improve body contour and in many cases allows the patient to drop as many as a few waist sizes. If the patient has significant loose and lax skin on the abdomen Dr. Stuart Kincaid may recommend an abdominoplastycombined with liposuction to remove the loose skin and achieve the best aesthetic result.    Become a Fan on Facebook     Follow us on Twitter    More on Dr.Kincaid

San Diego Dr Stuart Kincaid Among the First to Offer New FDA Approved Breast Implants

May 14th, 2012

Breast Aug photo San Diego Dr Stuart Kincaid Among the First to Offer New FDA Approved Breast Implants Something exciting is happening at the plastic surgery office of Dr. StuartKincaid in San Diego and Temecula.  The new FDA approved silicone gel Sientra breastimplants will soon be available as an option for patients considering breastaugmentation or breastreconstruction. The new Sientra implants have been available outside of the US; however, they have just achieved FDA approval recently. Neither of the two major silicone gel implant manufacturers with FDA approval, which include Allergan and Mentor offer a line of breast implants exclusively through board-certified plastic surgeons. Sientra  breast implants are only available through board-certified plastic surgeons because of the expertise required when using the wide range of breast implant options Sientra makes available. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is able to use his ASPS board certification and training to make the best breast implant selection for breast augmentation patients. As a talented and artistic plastic surgeon Dr. Stuart Kincaid realizes the vast differences between each patient’s body type, chest wall, and aesthetic desires. To best meet the desires of a patient Dr. Stuart Kincaid must take into consideration many of the patient’s physical attributes. Sientra breast implants offer many different shapes and profiles so that Dr. Stuart Kincaid is able to use the breast implants as tools to achieve a specific contour and shape for the patient. This can be extremely critical especially in patients who have a concave chest wall, a barrel chest, or scoliosis. Traditional round silicone implants could create an undesirable and an aesthetically pleasing look on these types of patients. Dr. Stuart Kincaid may suggest the high projection round silicone gel breast implant which can work perfectly for patients who need more projection in the upper portion of the breast and wider projection through the middle portion of the breast. This implant is unique to the Sientra breast implant line.  Patients should contact Dr. Stuart Kincaid’s office to determine if the Sientra breast implant line is a good breast augmentation or breast reconstruction option for them.   Become a Fan on Facebook       Follow us on Twitter               More on Dr.Kincaid

A Look At The 10-Year History of Botox

May 12th, 2012

Ten years ago, women were slathering creams on their faces in hopes of reducing the signs of aging. Then a game changer arrived in the cosmetic world, Botox in Temecula. This injectable gel is celebrating its 10th anniversary, which is marked with huge popularity. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Botox was the most popular procedure of 2011, with more than two million procedures happening last year alone. While Botox is in high demand, there are several historical factors that few people know about the beauty enhancer.

According to CBS, San Francisco ophthalmologist Dr. Alan Scott is credited with creating Botox as a treatment for crossed eyes. His clinical trials showed an unexpected side effect; patients said the treatment erased fine lines and wrinkles. This accidental discovery made the injectable gel famous.

Scott said his patients made remarks like, “’Oh, doctor, I’ve come to get the lines out,’” he told the news source about his eye patients who were among the first people to receive Botox. “And I would laugh, ‘Ha-ha,’ but I really wasn’t that tuned into the practical, and valuable aspect of that.”

Scott sold his Botox creation to a pharmaceutical company, Allergan. Eventually, the FDA approved Botox for cosmetic uses and it is now generating one billion dollars in revenue each year.

“When approved by the FDA in 2002, Botox Cosmetic changed the way that physicians could treat patients who were interested in improving the appearance of their vertical frown lines between the brows,” said David E.I. Pyott, President and CEO of Allergan, Inc., according to the news source. “Botox Cosmetic has become the number-one neuromodulator in the United States.”

While Botox has become a cosmetic phenomenon, few people know what the gel is made from. Botox comes from a toxin. In large doses, it’s the same toxin that causes the life-threatening type of food poisoning called botulism. However, doctor’s using Botox for cosmetic purposes only use it is small doses. Once injected, the liquid weakens or paralyzes certain muscles and blocks certain nerves, which leads to smoother looking skin. The effects last about three to four months.

Patients utilizing Botox treatments have to repeat the injections about four times a year to maintain the youthful look. While these repeated appointments might deter some from the procedure, many women say the results are remarkably better than the old creams suggested a decade ago.

If you’re interested in a minimally-invasive way to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and an overall rejuvenated look, trust Dr. Kincaid, a board-certified plastic surgeon, to achieve your desired look. Book your consultation today at our Temecula office by calling 951-695-9934.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Weight Loss Drug Gets FDA Approval Recommendation

May 11th, 2012

obese woman5 Plastic Surgery Blog: Weight Loss Drug Gets FDA Approval RecommendationAs new weight loss pills come to market many are hopeful that they will not fail is a many have in the past. According to a recent local news story, the FDA has approved a new weight-loss prescription drug. According to thearticle an advisory panel to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday recommended approval of the weight-loss medication lorcaserin, although concerns still remain about cardiovascular side effects. If the agency gives the nod of approval to the drug, lorcaserin will be the first new prescription weight loss drug made available to the public in 10 years. The FDA does not have to follow the advice of the panel but typically it does. The panel which consisted of experts voted 18 to 4, with one abstention, for approval, saying the drug’s benefits “outweigh the potential risks when used long term” for people battling excess weight, the Associated Press reported. Lorcaserin was not always received with favor. According to the AP, in 2010 scientists were extremely concerned about possible tumors developed in animals while testing the drug. The company resubmitted the drug clinical trials with more in-depth data which satisfied the panel. Once this drug comes to market, if it does help patients lose weight there will be the after effects of weight loss which do not seem to get as much attention. Dr. StuartKincaidconsults with many patientswho are dissatisfied after the elation of weight loss with the contour of their body. Many are left with large amounts of loose and lax skin on their arms, abdomen, and thighs. In many cases Dr. Stuart Kincaid will recommend an abdominoplastyfor the abdomen, a brachioplastyfor the arms, and a thighliftfor the thighs. All of these procedures remove loose skin and help Dr. Stuart Kincaid to contour a more aesthetically pleasing body. Patients feel much better about their weight loss when it is reflected through a better appearance as well as health.        Become a Fan on Facebook     Follow us on Twitter   More on Dr.Kincaid

Wave of the Future? Fat Cells Used in Breast Augmentation

May 10th, 2012

Breast implants, which were first introduced in 1962, have had a colored past. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, different generations have viewed the “silicon shapers” with varying degrees of satisfaction.

Victoria Pitts-Taylor, director of the Center for the Study of Women and Society at the City University of New York, says the need for a busty bosom all started when the trend took over Hollywood. Blondes, like Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield, flooded the newsstands and their big-busted sisters, like Rita Hayworth and Jane Russell, came close on their heels. This revolution spread into Main Street and now  “women feel they must compete with what is essentially a pornographic aesthetic,” Pitts-Taylor said.

Last year about 316,000 breast augmentations were performed in the United States, a statistic that many doctors believe will only increase in time. As the beauty trend continues, researchers are creating new ways to enhance breasts. While silicon is the preferred method now, in the future, some believe fat cells will be used.

Whatever the reason a patient seeks cosmetic surgery in San Diego, it’s important for them to know that techniques are changing. A technique pioneered in Japan injects a woman’s breasts with her own stem and fat cells, creating breasts that look and feel smoother than conventional cosmetic surgery using implants. According to a Fox News article, this is because the stem cells enable the fat to grow its own blood supply, thus becoming an integral part of the breast rather than a foreign lump.

“I’m newly convinced,” Venkat Ramakrishnan, a specialist in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust told Fox News. “A lot more people have to use it and prove it, but it does seem to have something to it.”

Kotaro Yoshimura, a surgeon at Tokyo University medical school who is working on this technique, claims his method has advantages over the current implant. For example, silicone and water implants can leak. The main drawback is that the stem cell implant gives only half the extra volume of new breast compared with conventional enhancements. Another limitation is that thin patients may not have enough spare fat. While fat and stem cell injections haven’t been approved in the United States, other European countries have given it their seal of approval.

If you are seeking breast augmentation surgery in San Diego and would like to know about the most current implant methods available, contact Dr. Kincaid at 858-450-4199 at his La Jolla office to schedule a consultation today. Plastic Surgery Blog: Minerals Are Good For the Body

May 10th, 2012

magnesium sources Plastic Surgery Blog: Minerals Are Good For the Body Healthy foods are known to have numerous benefits for maintaining a stable weight as well as reducing the risks of serious diseases. But, it’s hard to determine which minerals are most beneficial to our health. According to a recentonlinearticle magnesium is a mineral found in whole grains, nuts, beans and dark-green vegetables. It is significant in over 300 chemical reactions that help keep the body functioning the way it should. Magnesium is critical for many different purposes, including the right growth and maintenance of bone, maximum function of nerves and muscles, and for a strong immune system. It also is beneficial in maintaining heart rhythm, regulating blood sugar levels and promoting normal blood pressure.  It is responsible for energy metabolism and protein synthesis. Foods that are high in fiber are usually high in magnesium. Fiber is the indigestible part of plant foods that pushes through our digestive system, absorbing water during the process and making bowel movements easier. Magnesium is found in the two types of fiber—soluble and insoluble. Foods loaded with soluble fiber include oat bran, fruits, vegetables, brown rice, barley and nuts. Foods with an abundance of insoluble fiber include wheat bran and whole-grain breads and cereals.  The recommended dietary allowance for magnesium is 320 milligrams per day for women and 420 milligrams for men. Maintaining right dietary allowance of magnesium and other minerals is important to maintaining a healthy diet and a stable weight. Dr. StuartKincaid consults with some patientswho become frustrated after successfully maintaining a healthy diet and exercise plan, yet still are dissatisfied with their body contour. Some patients complain about thickness in the upper abdomen, on the outer thighs, and sides of the abdomen. These are areas that typically do not respond well to diet and exercise alone. Usually Dr. Stuart Kincaid will recommend liposuctionas an extremely effective way to target specific areas, removing the fat strategically and creating a better contour. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure and provided the patient maintains a stable and healthy weight they can expect the results to last long-term.    Become a Fan on Facebook    Follow us on Twitter  More on Dr.Kincaid

Plastic Surgery Blog: Heatwaves Expected to Be Prevalent; Are You Swimsuit ready?

May 9th, 2012

beautiful bikini body2 Plastic Surgery Blog: Heatwaves Expected to Be Prevalent; Are You Swimsuit ready? According to a recentnewsstory, the summer is on tap to have more uncharacteristic California heat waves.  According to the article The Scripps Institution of Oceanography stated in a summary of on-going climate change research that severe heat waves are predicted to become common across California throughout this century, a change that would have a profound effect on everything from public health to energy consumption. SIO is referring to the sort of heat waves that increased temperatures to 100 degrees or more for at least three consecutive days in 1955 and 2006. The institution’s scientists advised energy utilities on their work, which is scheduled to be published in 2013. In the conclusion of the research, SIO climate researcher David Pierce said, “We’ll start getting these kinds of heat waves more frequently by 2020 and by 2070, they’ll become frequent.” The frequency of the heat waves hasn’t been pinpointed in part because climate models aren’t exact and scientists don’t understand how forecasted climate change will affect the coastal marine layer, which maintains a cooling effect. Pierce added in the statement, “That matters because the marine layer makes a big difference to energy use, since so many people live near the coast, but the new models are the best look we have yet at what the future climate is likely to hold.”   As the weather heats up women are bound to think about swimsuit season with either anticipation or anxiety. Dr. StuartKincaid encourages women to consider improving their body contour and creating a more proportionate bust line if they are unhappy with the contour of their body and size and shape of their bust line. Contrary to what some patientsmay believe liposuctionof 1 to 2 areas of the body such as abdomen or outer thighs combined withbreastaugmentation using breastimplantscan usually be performed in the same surgical setting. Most patients welcome this option for both financial savings as well as logistically having one recovery period which ca be easier to schedule then two separate surgeries. Patients who have these procedures with Dr. Stuart Kincaid are overwhelmingly happy and most cannot wait to purchase their swimsuit for the summer.   Become a Fan on Facebook      Follow us on Twitter

A Tax Break For Cosmetic Surgery?

May 9th, 2012

Cosmetic surgery is not a decision made lightly. Aside from understanding the risks and benefits of a procedure, patients must also weigh the cost of the procedure. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, at least one country is giving cosmetic surgery patients a financial perk. In Brazil, government officials have made the cost of cosmetic surgery a little easier for residents to handle. The South American country has made procedures like tummy tucks, breast augmentations and liposuction tax deductible, according to an article in Allure magazine. This new tax deduction isn’t just for future patients; it’s a retroactive credit for anyone that received plastic surgery since 2004.

Brazil’s Plastic Surgery Society reports the number of procedures performed has climbed by as much as 30 percent annually in recent years. Brazil is the world’s top plastic surgery provider, with the United States coming in second place, according to the Associated Press.

“We concluded that cosmetic surgeries are also about health, physical and mental, and should be included in the list of deductible expenses,” Brazil’s tax coordinator, Joaquim Adir, told Bloomberg News.

“Everybody wants to be beautiful,” Brazilian plastic surgeon Sebastiao Guerra told the news provider. “But plastic surgery isn’t just about vanity. In the majority of cases, there are psychological benefits too.”

While Brazil believes the tax break will draw people to their country, here in the United States, the federal government has considered adding taxes to cosmetic surgeries. While several proposals have been written, so far, lawmakers have rejected an additional tax. Some states, including California and Washington have considered a tax too, as a way to raise more revenue.

Plastic surgeons in San Diego are fighting against additional taxes, saying it will drive business away. Surgeons say an additional tax won’t just hurt their business, but could also hurt a state’s economy. “When someone has plastic surgery, they’re not only coming to a plastic surgeon,” a New Jersey-based plastic surgeon told NPR. “They’re utilizing a hospital or a surgery center; they’re staying in local hotels; their family is eating in local restaurants; they’re utilizing pharmacies to fill their prescriptions. So all of that revenue is lost.”

If you’re considering plastic surgery and want to speak to an award-winning plastic surgeon in San Diego, call Dr. Kincaid at 858-450-4199 and schedule your consultation today. Dr. Kincaid serves Chula Vista, Eastlake, Imperial Beach, Coronado, and the greater San Diego County area.

Plastic Surgery Blog: Osteoporosis Can Strike Anyone at Any Age

May 8th, 2012

osteoporosis Plastic Surgery Blog: Osteoporosis Can Strike Anyone at Any Age Osteoporosis has been highlighted in the media thanks to pharmaceutical companies and celebrities encouraging mostly middle-aged women to begin taking preventative medications. According to recentonlinearticle osteoporosis is a danger to more than just middle-aged postmenopausal women, it could include men. According to the article, osteoporosis is a thinning of the bones that reduces the bone mass because of a depletion of calcium and bone protein. Basically, osteoporosis is a disease that makes a person’s bones weaker and more likely to fracture. Osteoporosis is sometimes referred to as a “silent disease” because it does not display any noticeable symptoms. Most people, men and women, are surprised to learn that they have weak bones, and usually only discover the fact when they experience a fracture, usually considered a fragility fracture. The diagnosis of osteoporosis in men often gets dismissed, patients should talk with their physician if they notice a decrease in height, difference in posture or the introduction of new and severe back pain. These symptoms could be because of a collapse of the vertebrae in the spine from weakness in the bone created by osteoporosis. Discuss your risk indicators and ask about a bone density test and other tests you may require helping predict your risk of osteoporosis. A bone density test could alert you about low bone density and if you should possibly pursue treatment with an osteoporosis medicine. Dr. StuartKincaid reminds both male and female patientsthat attention to overall health is one of the best investments patients can make. Good health also includes pursuing your best appearance. While women in general are proactive when it comes to maintaining their best appearance, men are beginning to understand the importance of looking as good as they feel. Dr. Stuart Kincaid offers popular male surgical procedures including gynecomastiaand male liposuction. These procedures can make a substantial difference in body contouring for men. Gynecomastia surgery contours the chest by removing excess breast tissue that can be embarrassing for many men. Liposuction for men is typically performed on the abdominal area including the front, love handles as well as lower back. Liposuction as a surgical sculpting procedure can help many men achieve a much more aesthetically pleasing contour than they could achieve through diet and exercise alone.

Plastic Surgery Blog: A Review of Statins

May 7th, 2012

statins Plastic Surgery Blog: A Review of StatinsStatins are the most widely prescribed drug in the United States. Many are now available over-the-counter and there have been some warnings that made the news recently. A Fox news story reviewed statins and the recommendations for patients. According to the news story statins are taken by nearly 21 million Americans. The FDA recently released a statement that it would be adding new warnings to the labels of LipitorZocor and other statins to say that they may cause memory lapses and raise levels of blood sugar. Dr. Matthew Sorrentino, a preventive cardiologist, professor of medicine and associate director of the Bucksbaum Institute for Clinical Excellence at University of Chicago shared these important points: The new findings are not new information. Medical professionals in the field are well aware of these possible side effects. The higher blood sugar level only means that there is a slight increase in the possibility that diabetes could develop. For memory loss the data is even less substantial. The FDA felt there were enough reports to issue a warning, although the data is not as plentiful as the diabetes data. Muscle aches as a possible side effect are also not new. It only affects about 8% of the patients and the vast majority of patients handle statins very well. The clinical evidence shows there is no reason for patients to discontinue the use of statins even if they have taken them for a long time. Most medical experts agree that controlling cholesterol and heart conditions through lifestyle changes, diet, and exercise is best. Dr. StuartKincaid requires his patientsto provide medical information when considering plasticsurgery procedures. This includes a detailed list of all medications including prescription, over-the-counter, and supplements. Baby boomers are likely to be included in the number of patients taking statins on a regular basis. These patients often consult with Dr. Stuart Kincaid concerning suggestions for anti-aging solutions. Dr. Stuart Kincaid will typically advised patients to consider different options depending upon the patient’s goals and desires. For patients who are taking some medications, surgery is may not be desired. These patients have excellent options and Dr. Stuart Kincaid may recommend the state-of-the-art Sciton Profile and Joule Lasers   available through his practice as an excellent solution to facial aging. Dr. Stuart Kincaid is able to manage the intensity of the lasers and achieve optimal results in a short amount of time. Patients are also able to benefit from injectablesincluding Botoxand fillers such as Restylane, and JuvedermSculptraCosmetic is also an option for patients who prefer gradual improvement over time. Patients who are taking statins are not ineligible for surgical procedures solely based on the medication. Patients should consult with Dr. Stuart Kincaid to determine if in fact they are a good candidate for both minimallyinvasiveas well as surgical procedures.  Become a Fan on Facebook    Follow us on Twitter       More on Dr.Kincaid
